Book Synopsis Quest for Salvation in Saul Bellow's Novels by : Kyung-Ae Kim
Download or read book Quest for Salvation in Saul Bellow's Novels written by Kyung-Ae Kim and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1994 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an enlightening study on some of the problems involved in interpreting Bellow's novels. It examines the current critical approaches and discusses Bellow's literary position in close connection with Romanticism and Modernism. This study is engaged in exploring the nature of the Bellovian hero's quasi-religious or even mystical quest for salvation. How does the hero encounter the moment of vision? At what moment? And what are the nature and the character of the epiphanic experiences in Bellow's novels? These central issues are examined in links with the Jewish-Christian tradition and Zen Buddhism. The study concludes from the analyis of Henderson the Rain King, Herzog and Humboldt's Gift that the Bellovian hero's quest for salvation is presented with irony and skepticism, though with a deep religious vein.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old Testament recounts the story of King Saul, a charismatic and righteous man chosen by God to be king over his people. Though favored by God, Saul turns rebellious and mad, driven by an obsession to kill his most loyal and faithful servant, David, who doesn't stop honoring Saul. Like David, Marine finds herself loving and fearing a man who is set over her to guide and protect her. Like King Saul, her husband Loammi turns from a charming leader to a rebellious, mad, narcissistic, and victim-playing abuser. This is my story, mirrored in the Word of God, providing me with answers I have sought for years and helping me understand what was wrong with my husband, as I walked as a child of God praying for a miracle to heal our abusive marriage. This book is for all the women who know the pain of domestic abuse and seek to understand what a loving wife, a partner, should do. As I share my story, my hope is to encourage you to search your unique story and answers in the Bible.
Download or read book King Saul written by John C. Holbert and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-03-21 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: King Saul is based on the Biblical story of the first king of Israel. It retells the story in a fresh way, offering new looks at the three major characters--Saul, Samuel, and David--and the events that brought them together at the very foundation of the nation of Israel three millennia ago. Holbert's retelling reveals how this old story is surprisingly modern as it turns its gaze on power politics, personal rivalries, and religious use and abuse as the life of early Israel unfolds.

Download or read book Saul Bellow written by Gerald Sorin and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saul Bellow: "I Was a Jew and an American and a Writer" offers a fresh and original perspective on the life and works of Saul Bellow, the Nobel Prize winner in Literature in 1976. Author Gerald Sorin emphasizes Bellow's Jewish identity as fundamental to his being and the content and meaning of his fiction. Bellow's work from the 1940s to 2000, when he wrote his last novel at the age of 84, centers on the command in Deuteronomy to "Choose life" as distinct from nihilistic withdrawal and the defense of meaninglessness. Although Bellow disdained the label of "American Jewish Writer," Sorin conjectures that he was an outstanding representative of the classification. Bellow and the characters in his fiction not only choose life but also explore what it means to live a good life, however difficult that may be to define, and regardless of how much harder it is to achieve. For Sorin, Bellow realized that at least two obstacles stood in the way: the imperfection of the world and the frailty of the human pursuer. Saul Bellow: "I Was a Jew and an American and a Writer" provides a new and insightful narrative of the life and works of Saul Bellow. By using Bellow's deeply internalized Jewishness and his remarkable imagination and creativity as a lens, Sorin examines how he captured the shifting atmosphere of postwar American culture.

Book Synopsis Jesus Outside the Lines by : Scott Sauls
Download or read book Jesus Outside the Lines written by Scott Sauls and published by Tyndale House Publishers, Inc.. This book was released on 2015-03-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether the issue of the day on Twitter, Facebook, or cable news is our sexuality, political divides, or the perceived conflict between faith and science, today’s media pushes each one of us into a frustrating clash between two opposing sides. Polarizing, us-against-them discussions divide us and distract us from thinking clearly and communicating lovingly with others. Scott Sauls, like many of us, is weary of the bickering and is seeking a way of truth and beauty through the conflicts. Jesus Outside the Lines presents Jesus as this way. Scott shows us how the words and actions of Jesus reveal a response that does not perpetuate the destructive fray. Jesus offers us a way forward—away from harshness, caricatures, and stereotypes. In Jesus Outside the Lines, you will experience a fresh perspective of Jesus, who will not (and should not) fit into the sides.
