His work in the main is directed to the difficult area of the foundations of theology. Combining the insight of St. Thomas and Kant, he has been hailed as the pioneer of a new way forward and criticized for constructing a labyrinth from which there is no exit. 'Looking at Lonergan's Method' is a collection of essays by theologians, philosophers, and scientists, Catholic and Protestant, English-speaking and continental, who offer their assessment of Lonergan's important work, 'Method in Theology.' 'Looking at Lonergan's Method' is a sequel to a conference held at St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, Ireland, in the spring of 1973.

Download or read book The Importance of Insight written by Michael Vertin and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in honour of Michael Vertin the distinguished philosopher and Lonergan scholar at the University of Toronot, The Importance of Insight brings together a number of thoughtful essays by leading Lonergan scholars. These essays investigate the importance of Lonergan's articulation of insight, and how it can be applied within the fields of cognitional theory, theology, ethics, and politics. The contributors address several issues emerging from the post-Enlightenment crisis of meaning and value, as well as more specific contemporary concerns, such as the nature of Christian revelation, the articulation of Church doctrine, and the ethical training health care professionals should receive. By indicating what there is to be gained by understanding and applying insight in a number of different contexts, this collection highlights the relevance of Lonergan's thought in the contemporary intellectual and cultural milieu, and, at the same time, makes a significant contribution to the development of Lonergan's thought itself. In this way, The Importance of Insight offers a window into cutting-edge Lonergan scholarship and some of its central concerns and preoccupations.

Book Synopsis The Promise of Critical Theology by : Marc P. Lalonde
Download or read book The Promise of Critical Theology written by Marc P. Lalonde and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in tribute to one of the foremost Catholic theologians in the English-speaking world, the essays in The Promise of Critical Theology address the question: Can critical theology secure its critical operation without undermining its foundation in religious tradition and experience? Is “critical theology” simply an oxymoron when viewed from both sides of the equation? From Marc Lalonde’s introductory essay which delimits Davis’ fundamental position, that the primary task of critical theology is the critique of religious orthodoxy, the essays examine Davis’ distinction between faith and belief and build upon the promise of critical theology as inextricably bound to the promise of faith. They ask: What is its promise? What particular religious ideas, themes, stories are appropriate for its concrete expression? How can the community of faith receive its transformative message? What might be the contribution of other religious traditions and philosophies? Essays by Paul Lakeland, Dennis McCann, Kenneth Melchin, Michael Oppenheim and Marsha Hewitt respond to these and other questions and critically relate Davis’ work to ongoing developments in modern theology, critical theory, philosophy and the social sciences. Their diversity attests to the comprehensive scope of Davis’ thought and exemplifies the progressive character of contemporary religious discourse. They honour Davis and illuminate the promise of critical religious thinking in itself.

Book Synopsis The Ethics of Discernment by : Patrick H. Byrne
Download or read book The Ethics of Discernment written by Patrick H. Byrne and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Ethics of Discernment, Patrick H. Byrne presents an approach to ethics that builds upon the cognitional theory and the philosophical method of self-appropriation that Bernard Lonergan introduced in his book Insight, as well as upon Lonergan’s later writing on ethics and values. Extending Lonergan’s method into the realm of ethics, Byrne argues that we can use self-appropriation to come to objective judgements of value. The Ethics of Discernment is an introspective analysis of that process, in which sustained ethical inquiry and attentiveness to feelings as “intentions of value” leads to a rich conception of the good. Written both for those with an interest in Lonergan’s philosophy and for those interested in theories of ethics who have only a limited knowledge of Lonergan’s work, Byrne’s book is the first detailed exposition of an ethical theory based on Lonergan’s philosophical method.
Book Synopsis The Family As Basic Social Unit by : Kevin Schemenauer
Download or read book The Family As Basic Social Unit written by Kevin Schemenauer and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2024-06 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Family as Basic Social Unit provides a theologically rooted account of the family's social roles and responsibilities. As a basic social unit, the family is both internally social and socially interdependent with other social communities. Reflecting on the family's internally social character, Schemenauer proposes that Catholic social teaching applies to family interactions. He analyzes household labor using papal teaching on work and sibling violence with more recent theological analysis of peacemaking, and he argues that families can complete works of mercy when they feed hungry and care for sick family members. In the second part of the volume, Schemenauer describes the social interdependence of families. He analyzes the relationship between families and the Church, civil society, the economy, and the state. Schemenauer proposes that the question for families is not whether to engage with other social communities but how to do so well. He explicitly highlights how consumer capitalism creates obstacles for families attempting to live as a basic social unit. Then, employing the categories of infused simplicity and moral cooperation, he provides a framework for discerning family engagement with broader society. Finally, Schemenauer analyzes the relationship between family commitments and social ministry. Working from the family outward, Schemenauer describes how family commitments can motivate broader social service, but then employs the example of families involved in the Catholic Worker Movement to reflect on the joys and dangers of balancing commitment to one's family with social ministry focused on the urgent needs of those outside of one's household.
Download or read book Parnell: A Novel written by Brian Cregan and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dublin, March 1874. Charles Stewart Parnell, only twenty-six years old, speaks in public for the first time as a candidate for Ireland's Home Rule Party. Hesitant and nervous, he stumbles through his speech to the sound of booing and leaves the platform humiliated. He vows that in future he will find his voice – and make it heard. Within three years of this speech, Parnell made the House of Commons unworkable; within six years he had destroyed the landlords in Ireland; and within a decade he controlled the House of Commons and put English Prime Ministers in and out of government at will. Parnell: A Novel charts the life of this most enigmatic and remarkable of men, as seen through the eyes of his loyal secretary James Harrison. From the Houses of Parliament to the blighted villages of the West of Ireland, from the courtrooms of the Royal Courts of Justice to the cells of Kilmainham Gaol, this is the story of how the character of one man could alter the fate of two nations.
