Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offers a profound vision of the Christian epic as the site of the modern apocalyptic reenactment of the original apocalypse. In this series of essays, Thomas J. J. Altizer explores the Christian epic as the site of modern revolutionary apocalyptic reenactments and renewals of the original apocalypse enacted by Jesus Christ and primitive Christianity. Beginning with the pivotal seventeenth-century figures Milton and Spinoza, Altizer analyzes the apocalyptic visions of key figures of modernity, including Blake, Hegel, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, and Joyce, often juxtaposing them to surprising and illuminating effect. These revolutionary moments stand in opposition to what Altizer calls the pathological modern counterrevolution that dominates the world today, which is an effect of a new postmodernity and of a progressive dissolution of historical consciousness. Through his analysis of modern apocalyptic moments and thinkers, this book becomes an elegant and accessible guide to Altizer’s own apocalyptic vision and his ultimate project of the total and comprehensive reconstruction of theology. “This is an indispensable work of closure coming from one of contemporary theology’s most lucid, original, rebellious, provocative, and passionate voices. Altizer’s most central and tenaciously held convictions are distilled into this essential testament.” — William Franke, author of Secular Scriptures: Modern Theological Poetics in the Wake of Dante “This book is vintage Altizer: a vast and profound vision of the transformations of interiority, conceptions of the world, and the idea/image of God throughout the time of Western culture. Altizer is an incredible and amazing writer and thinker. I found myself stopped dead in my tracks, left to ponder anew everything that I thought I knew. His intuitions and insights are so penetrating and enlightening that they evoke sheer wonder at the marvel of his accomplishment.” — David E. Klemm, coauthor of Religion and the Human Future: An Essay on Theological Humanism

Book excerpt: In this book James Kallas analyzes the four most popular ways in which Christians have dealt with the book of Revelation. He agrees in part with those who espouse the “end of history” view, conceding that the epistle is futuristic in its confession of the hope of Christ’s return, but denying that it is only a discussion of the last days of the world. He repudiates as unscriptural and blasphemous the “all of history” view which uses the book to calculate specific timetables of human events. Underscoring the timeless character of God’s promises to his suffering people, a premise of the “above history” view, Kallas emphasizes that the Word is addressed to all men of all times. He fully confirms the “in that history” view which stressed that Revelation must first be understood in terms of its original readers—the Christians of Asia Minor—and its historical background. Documenting his conclusions with biblical and historical examples, Kallas reviews the origins and style of apocalyptic writing. He explains that the theme of such literature, the conflict between God and Satan on a massive scale, was produced by the despair of God’s people in troubled times. He discusses the immediate purpose of Revelation, describing its symbolic language as a camouflaged message of hope from an imprisoned apostle to Christians suffering severe persecution at the hands of Rome. Only then does he carefully evaluate John’s message for Christians today.

In Agents of the Apocalypse, noted prophecy expert Dr. David Jeremiah does what no prophecy expert has done before. He explores the book of Revelation through the lens of its major players—the exiled, the martyrs, the elders, the victor, the king, the judge, the 144,000, the witnesses, the false prophet, and the beast. One by one, Dr. Jeremiah delves into their individual personalities and motives, and the role that each plays in biblical prophecy. Then he provides readers with the critical clues and information needed to recognize their presence and power in the world today. The stage is set, and the curtain is about to rise on Earth’s final act. Will you be ready?

This plan includes 6,000 years of human history and 1,000 years of prophetic events yet to take place. With its many verses it has become like a miniature Bible that explains the Creator's plan for humanity and the reasons why we exist. The 10th chapter of this book focuses on the cuckoo clock analogy. It is a summary explanation of special historic events that correspond to parallel events that will take place during the 7 years of the Great Tribulation. We have a saying that history repeats itself, and this book demonstrates where it does so prophetically.

This occurs through a historical, literary, and theological analysis of the Christian epic tradition. While attention is focused primarily upon Dante, Milton, Blake, and Joyce, the Classical and Biblical foundations of the Christian epic are explored with the intention of discovering an organic unity in the evolution of the Western consciousness. Our primary epics are identified as revolutionary breakthroughs, not only as transformations of consciousness but also records of social revolutions. The Christian epic is both a consequence and a primary embodiment of the decisive historical revolutions, revolutions culminating with the ending of our historical evolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE INCREDIBLE DISCOVERY THAT THE BOOK OF REVELATION HAS BEEN A MONSTROUS DECEPTION WHICH HAS FOOLED CHRISTIANS FOR ALMOST 2000 YEARS The Apocalypse, also known as the Book of Revelation is the last book of the New Testament. It begins with these words: "The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to show unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John: Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw." (Revelation. 1:1) Those words are not those of Jesus Christ, contrary to the claims of its author. Transmitted through an unnamed angel, they are part of a monstrous deception that has plagued Christianity ever since they were first penned. Furthermore, contrary to popular belief, the Apocalypse was not written by John the Apostle, the son of Zebedee nor is it. Who then wrote the Apocalypse? He is the same person that John the Elder confronted in the Roman Baths of Ephesus and called "the enemy of the Truth." If as I will show, that the Book of Revelation was written by this person, then clearly, he is an enemy of the Truth, the Apocalypse cannot be included the Christian Canon of the New Testament This book expands upon the scholarly work, "The Apocalypse" written by R.H. Charles in 1920, the famous scholar widely recognised as the greatest authority of his time in matters of Jewish eschatology and apocrypha. Now take heed of a prophecy that Jesus made about a future time after his crucifixion. "Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he, ' and, 'The time is near.' Do not follow them." (Luke 21:8) Do not follow anyone who says "the time is near" Jesus says. Do not be deceived he says. Yet this is exactly what the writer of the Apocalypse says. "Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this scroll, because the time is near." (Revelation 22:10) As a Christian, as long as you adhere to the words of Jesus and the Apostles recorded in the Gospels and the other writings of the New Testament, then the council of John the Elder, the disciple that Jesus loved and the author of the Fourth Gospel, will serve you well. "So He said to the Jews who had believed Him, 'If you continue in My word, you are truly My disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'" (John 8:32) May this book set you free, but this it will not do unless you are willing look past your prejudices, seek the truth and read it. You will not regret it if you do.

Book excerpt: A startling exploration of the history of the most controversial book of the Bible, by the bestselling author of Beyond Belief. Through the bestselling books of Elaine Pagels, thousands of readers have come to know and treasure the suppressed biblical texts known as the Gnostic Gospels. As one of the world's foremost religion scholars, she has been a pioneer in interpreting these books and illuminating their place in the early history of Christianity. Her new book, however, tackles a text that is firmly, dramatically within the New Testament canon: The Book of Revelation, the surreal apocalyptic vision of the end of the world . . . or is it? In this startling and timely book, Pagels returns The Book of Revelation to its historical origin, written as its author John of Patmos took aim at the Roman Empire after what is now known as "the Jewish War," in 66 CE. Militant Jews in Jerusalem, fired with religious fervor, waged an all-out war against Rome's occupation of Judea and their defeat resulted in the desecration of Jerusalem and its Great Temple. Pagels persuasively interprets Revelation as a scathing attack on the decadence of Rome. Soon after, however, a new sect known as "Christians" seized on John's text as a weapon against heresy and infidels of all kinds-Jews, even Christians who dissented from their increasingly rigid doctrines and hierarchies. In a time when global religious violence surges, Revelations explores how often those in power throughout history have sought to force "God's enemies" to submit or be killed. It is sure to appeal to Pagels's committed readers and bring her a whole new audience who want to understand the roots of dissent, violence, and division in the world's religions, and to appreciate the lasting appeal of this extraordinary text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Antichrist, though mentioned a mere four times in the Bible, and then only obscurely, has exercised a tight hold on popular imagination throughout history. This has been particularly true in the U.S., says author Robert C. Fuller, where Americans have tended to view our nation as uniquely blessed by God--a belief that leaves us especially prone to demonizing our enemies. In Naming the Antichrist, Fuller takes us on a fascinating journey through the dark side of the American religious psyche, from the earliest American colonists right up to contemporary fundamentalists such as Pat Robertson and Hal Lindsey. Fuller begins by offering a brief history of the idea of the Antichrist and its origins in the apocalyptic thought in the Judeo-Christian tradition, and traces the eventual 71Gws how the colonists saw Antichrist personified in native Americans and French Catholics, in Anne Hutchinson, Roger Williams, and the witches of Salem, in the Church of England and the King. He looks at the Second Great Awakening in the early nineteenth century, showing how such prominent Americans as Yale president Timothy Dwight and the Reverend Jedidiah Morse (father of Samuel Morse) saw the work of the Antichrist in phenomena ranging from the French Revolution to Masonry. In the twentieth century, he finds a startling array of hate-mongers--from Gerald Winrod (who vilified Roosevelt as a pawn of the Antichrist) to the Ku Klux Klan--who drew on apocalyptic imagery in their attacks on Jews, Catholics, blacks, socialists, and others. Finally, Fuller considers contemporary fundamentalist writers such as Hal Lindsey (author of The Late Great Planet Earth, with some 19 million copies sold), Mary Stewart Relfe (whose candidates for the Antichrist have included such figures as Henry Kissinger, Pope John Paul II, and Anwar Sadat), and a host of others who have found Antichrist in the sinister guise of the European Economic Community, the National Council of Churches, feminism, New Age religions, and even supermarket barcodes and fibre optics (the latter functioning as "the eye of the Antichrist"). Throughout, Fuller reveals in vivid detail how our unique American obsession with the Antichrist reflects the struggle to understand ourselves--and our enemies--within the mythic context of the battle of absolute good versus absolute evil. From the Scofield Reference Bible (no other book had greater impact on the American Antichrist tradition) to the Scopes Monkey Trial, Fuller provides an informative and often startling look at a thread that weaves persistently throughout American religious and cultural life.
