Book excerpt: This handbook was designed as a reference tool for forest geneticists, tree breeders and other tree improvement personnel, as well as a textbook for university courses and short-courses at the graduate level in quantitative genetics. The chapters focus on the decision points faced by quantitative geneticists and breeders in designing programs and analyzing data. Beginning with a justification for the use of quantitative genetics in decision making in tree improvement programs, the book continues with a brief presentation of fundamental principles, followed by discussions and evaluations of mating designs and field test designs, the use of best linear predictors to estimate breeding values, the use of computer programs in the analysis of variance for genetic information, the deployment of genetically improved stock for capturing gains, the use of economic models for program justification, and the development of seed transfer guidelines.

Book excerpt: Any method of fitting equations to data may be called regression. Such equations are valuable for at least two purposes: making predictions and judging the strength of relationships. Because they provide a way of em pirically identifying how a variable is affected by other variables, regression methods have become essential in a wide range of fields, including the soeial seiences, engineering, medical research and business. Of the various methods of performing regression, least squares is the most widely used. In fact, linear least squares regression is by far the most widely used of any statistical technique. Although nonlinear least squares is covered in an appendix, this book is mainly ab out linear least squares applied to fit a single equation (as opposed to a system of equations). The writing of this book started in 1982. Since then, various drafts have been used at the University of Toronto for teaching a semester-Iong course to juniors, seniors and graduate students in a number of fields, including statistics, pharmacology, pharmacology, engineering, economics, forestry and the behav ioral seiences. Parts of the book have also been used in a quarter-Iong course given to Master's and Ph.D. students in public administration, urban plan ning and engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). This experience and the comments and critieisms from students helped forge the final version.

Book excerpt: SAS Programming for R Users, based on the free SAS Education course of the same name, is designed for experienced R users who want to transfer their programming skills to SAS. Emphasis is on programming and not statistical theory or interpretation. You will learn how to write programs in SAS that replicate familiar functions and capabilities in R. This book covers a wide range of topics including the basics of the SAS programming language, how to import data, how to create new variables, random number generation, linear modeling, Interactive Matrix Language (IML), and many other SAS procedures. This book also explains how to write R code directly in the SAS code editor for seamless integration between the two tools. Exercises are provided at the end of each chapter so that you can test your knowledge and practice your programming skills.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final reader in the Child Development in Social Context series shows how the study of child development is inevitably bound up in more ephemeral cultural ideas about the nature and needs of children and in the educational practices that rise from these ideas. Some readings point to the dangers which can arise from the meeting of science and cultural values, using for illustration studies of the role of psychological theory in reinforcing social attitudes to child care inside and outside the family. Other readings look at children's initiation into that relatively recent cultural invention, the school, and the relationship with their learning at home. There are studies of their social development in classroom and playground, with particular emphasis on ethnic relationships.

Provides solutions to complex industrial problems by demonstrating how to define the problem and evaluate it statistically with the aim of accelerating product design testing that requires fewer samples and offers more information with less test effort. Along with examples, it contains detailed additional material presented in tabular form for both easy reference and cross-reference.
