Book Synopsis Sound and Communication by : Annette Wilke
Download or read book Sound and Communication written by Annette Wilke and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-01-28 with total page 1137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Hindu India both orality and sonality have enjoyed great cultural significance since earliest times. They have a distinct influence on how people approach texts. The importance of sound and its perception has led to rites, models of cosmic order, and abstract formulas. Sound serves both to stimulate religious feelings and to give them a sensory form. Starting from the perception and interpretation of sound, the authors chart an unorthodox cultural history of India, turning their attention to an important, but often neglected aspect of daily religious life. They provide a stimulating contribution to the study of cultural systems of perception that also adds new aspects to the debate on orality and literality.

Book excerpt: Swami Yogeshwaranand Saraswati was a great yogi of his time who had attained perfect mastery over Samadhi. His knowledge of self and God is based on the intuitive experiences he gained in deep meditation. Although he followed the Samkhya-Yoga systems of Philosophy, he deviated from their concepts wherever he experienced truth differently in his meditative vision. His views about the Vrittis and Samskaras are radically different from what is believed by the Samkhya School of Philosophy. In this present book, the author has analysed and discussed some of the most radical aspects of the Philosophy of Swami Yogeshwaranand. His approach is critical but he is also appreciative of some of the findings of Swami Yogeshwaranand which have enriched the Samkhya Philosophy or have contributed to the removal of cobwebs surrounding the conventional systems to augment the existing knowledge. He has done a commendable job of giving exposure to Philosophy or which has contributed to the removal of cobwebs surrounding the conventional systems to augment the existing knowledge. Book Synopsis Re-figuring the Ramayana as Theology by : Ajay K. Rao
Download or read book Re-figuring the Ramayana as Theology written by Ajay K. Rao and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-03 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rāmāyana of Vālmīki is considered by many contemporary Hindus to be a foundational religious text. But this understanding is in part the result of a transformation of the epic’s receptive history, a hermeneutic project which challenged one characterization of the genre of the text, as a work of literary culture, and replaced it with another, as a work of remembered tradition. This book examines Rāmāyana commentaries, poetic retellings, and praise-poems produced by intellectuals within the Śrīvaisnava order of South India from 1250 to 1600 and shows how these intellectuals reconceptualized Rāma’s story through the lens of their devotional metaphysics. Śrīvaisnavas applied innovative interpretive techniques to the Rāmāyana, including allegorical reading, ślesa reading (reading a verse as a double entendre), and the application of vernacular performance techniques such as word play, improvisation, repetition, and novel forms of citation. The book is of interest not only to Rāmāyana specialists but also to those engaged with Indian intellectual history, literary studies, and the history of religions.
