Book excerpt: Sarasota, a charming and unique city on the Gulf Coast, is still a small town in many ways. Today there are simply many more neighborhoods. This volume focuses on attractions, culture, and community from the 1940s to the present. Sarasota has many attractions besides beautiful beaches and boating waterways, including Mote Marine Laboratory, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, and the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, to name just a few. The Sarasota Opera House, the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, the West Coast Symphony, the Sarasota Ballet, and several small theaters contribute to this cultural mecca. During the time period covered here, hundreds of churches, schools, civic organizations, art colonies, and retirement homes have developed. Investors and entrepreneurs have greatly impacted the area, changing the architectural landscape, especially during the last 10 years, when development has had the most impact on the city skyline.
Book Synopsis Creating Sarasota County by : Frank A. Cassell
Download or read book Creating Sarasota County written by Frank A. Cassell and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2019 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of Sarasota County in 1921 inspired intrigue and drama, pitting local economic rivals against one another. The civic leaders of the Sarasota district fought what they saw as an incompetent and biased Manatee County Commission for seven years to build the roads needed to support their ambitions for growth and prosperity before finally winning out. They encountered other challenges, including the great Florida land boom of the 1920s, the construction of the Tamiami Trail and even an unsolved murder, but Sarasotans persevered to realize their dreams and fulfill their economic ambitions. Dr. Frank Cassell recounts this dramatic history and the tales of the men and women who led the county independence movement.

Download or read book Newtown Alive written by Rosalyn Howard Ph D and published by Rosalyn Howard, PH.D.. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book chronicles the history of Sarasota, Florida's African American community - Newtown - that celebrated its 100-year anniversary in 2014. It answers questions about many aspects of community life: why the earliest African Americans who came to Sarasota, then a tiny fishing village, first settled in areas near downtown called -Black Bottom- and -over town;- their transition from there to Newtown; how they developed Newtown from swampland into a self-contained community to ensure their own survival during the Jim Crow era; the ways they earned a living, what self-help organizations they formed; their religious and educational traditions; residents' military service, the strong emphasis placed on education; how they succeeded in gaining political representation after filing a federal lawsuit; and much more. Newtown residents fought for civil rights, endured and triumphed over Jim Crow segregation, suffered KKK intimidation and violence, and currently are resisting the stealthy gentrification of their community. Whether you are new to the area, a frequent visitor, an educator, historian or a longtime resident trying to connect the dots in your family tree, you will find these stories of courage, dignity and determination enlightening and empowering!

Book Synopsis Jews of Sarasota-Manatee by : Kimberly Sheintal
Download or read book Jews of Sarasota-Manatee written by Kimberly Sheintal and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1539, explorer Hernando de Soto landed near Sarasota, Florida, but centuries passed before the Sarasota-Manatee area saw many settlers. By the late 1840s, a few pioneers had arrived, but it was not until 1913 that the first Jewish person settled here. Other Jewish families followed, but no organization connected them until the Jewish Community Center of Sarasota was established in 1925. For early Jewish settlers, the biggest problem was isolation rather than discrimination. By the 1950s, when the region was experiencing a post-war population boom, some of Sarasota's most prominent citizens were Jewish. They played an enormous role in creating Sarasota's businesses, charitable organizations, and cultural assets, including the David Cohen Hall and the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. The Jewish Community Council, a precursor of the Jewish Federation, formed in 1959. Sarasota-Manatee now has 13 Jewish congregations and a thriving Jewish population. While the Jewish people of the area cannot be thanked for the sunny weather, they can be thanked for helping the community shine.
