Book excerpt: The title of my book, Santa's Thirty-Five Year Sleigh Ride: Memoirs of a Professional Career as Santa Claus, states the basic summary of my book and alerts the reader of what to expect. It contains many of my favorite memories (memoirs) of my career as a professional Santa Claus over the past thirty-five years. To me, children are special, and they deserve to be happy. At first contact, I have no idea of their background or their circumstances. I just do my best to make them feel like the most important person in the world. The few minutes they have with me (as Santa Claus) might very well be the only time during the entire year that they feel special, important, and loved. My memoirs are full of interesting stories, sad stories and true tales of surprising adventures and events in the life of a modern-day Santa Claus. Since I love humor, and I think that most people do, I have included my most memorable stories that are memorable because of the humor involved. And perhaps some of my favorite memories will become some of yours as well. Maybe you have wondered what a Santa Claus does, what experience he has had, or why he became a Santa Claus in the first place. Perhaps you have wondered what credentials he has to have or what type of personality he needs to be a great and convincing Santa Claus. If so, my book will be of great interest and value to you. I, as Santa, have had many, many precious moments with children; I have had both funny and sad moments that may bring you to tears. I've smiled, I've laughed, and I've cried. You will too. And if you've ever wondered what it would be like to be a Santa Claus and make a child smile by just being there...my book will help you to understand. And finally, if you have ever considered actually donning the red suit and portraying the 'Jolly Old Elf' yourself, my book may very well push you over the top.

Book excerpt: When Bing Crosby’s "White Christmas" debuted in 1942, no one imagined that a holiday song would top the charts year after year. One of the best-selling singles ever released, it remains on rotation at tree lighting ceremonies across the country, in crowded shopping malls on Black Friday, and at warm diners on lonely Christmas Eve nights. Over the years, other favorites have been added to America’s annual playlist, including Elvis Presley’s "Blue Christmas," the King Cole Trio’s "The Christmas Song," Gene Autry’s "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," Willie Nelson’s "Pretty Paper," and, of course, Elmo & Patsy’s "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer." Viewing American holiday values through the filter of familiar Christmas songs, Ronald Lankford examines popular culture, consumerism, and the dynamics of the traditional American family. He surveys more than seventy-five years of songs and reveals that the “modern American Christmas” has carried a complex and sometimes contradictory set of meanings. Interpreting tunes against the backdrop of the eras in which they were first released, he identifies the repeated themes of nostalgia, commerce, holiday blues, carnival, and travesty that underscore so much beloved music. This first full-length analysis of the lyrics, images, and commercial forces inextricably linked to Yuletide music hits the heart of what many Americans think Christmas is--or should be.

The story begins in the North Pole where Santa seeks to find the nicest of the nice and the kindest of the kind--that's the "Kid of the Year." Follow the enchanted and joyous adventure of Jen-bunny, as she begins her journey when her favorite stuffed animal wakes her up. They are then transported to the magical land of Santa where she becomes a princess, flies on a reindeer, and rides in a very small French race car named S'cargo. She meets the prince of the elves, gets rescued by giant army snowmen, and so much more. Each chapter is an adventure in itself leading up to the grandest adventure of them all, the great sleigh ride around the world on Christmas Eve. There's never a dull moment and plenty to smile, laugh and cheer about. The theme of the joy of kindness is displayed throughout the book, including a very clever anti-bullying message. Her dream is to use renewable energy because conservation and education are her passion. Unfortunately, her parents believe there's a greater profit allowing hunting tours to cull the local wild species. Emily vows to change their mind. Donovan Link doesn't stay in one place or with one job too long. This cowboy turned hunter is determined that the hunting lodge he built on the Three Sisters ranch will give him a nice nest egg so he could retire to Alaska, where the game is plentiful and his incarcerated father can never find him. When these two opposites clash, sparks fly. Donovan sees Emily as a sabotaging eco-warrior and she sees him as a soulless trophy hunter. But they need to work together to keep the Three Sisters ranch in the black and fighting with each other — and falling in love — complicates an already impossible situation.

Book excerpt: In The Twenty-Ninth Poem: Vol. 2, author Daddy Dave dedicates a variety of poems, stories, and observations to his daughter in honor of her twenty-ninth birthday. As with his first volume, which was dedicated to his son, this collection offers additional unique observations about life. Written in free-verse, non-rhyming style, many of the entries reflect the mystic union between father and daughter: and then a moment later I blew a little harder and a little harder until finally I exhaled through my nose hard enough onto that little finger of yours that I made a slight honking sound, and you giggled. That was the seed of the magic, and within seconds the concept clicked with you, and you ran down the hallway showing off your newly acquired talent to your mother. ?from ?How to Blow Your Nose? No two children are exactly alike, and so this second volume differs from the first in that it includes some short stories, many written by the author's daughter when she was in the fourth grade and included here with minor modifications. Children and families are precious, and Daddy Dave encourages every parent to write down their own versions of unique stories so that they can be remembered, considered, and passed down to future generations.

Book excerpt: An entertaining, often surprising look at the life of the world’s most influential fictional character. He is the embodiment of charity and generosity, a creation of mythology, a tool of clever capitalists. The very idea of him is enduring and powerful. Santa Claus was born in early-nineteenth-century America, but his family tree goes back seven hundred years to Saint Nicholas, patron saint of children. Intervening generations were shaggy and strange — whip-wielding menaces to naughty boys and girls. Yet as the raucous, outdoor, alcohol-fuelled holiday gave way to a more domestic, sentimental model, a new kind of gift-bringer was called for — a loveable elf, still judgmental but far less threatening. In this engaging social and cultural history, Gerry Bowler examines the place of Santa Claus in history, literature, advertising, and art. He traces his metamorphosis from a beardless youth into a red-suited peddler. He reveals the lesser-known aspects of the gift-bringer’s life — Santa’s involvement with social and political causes of all stripes (he enlisted on the Union side in the American Civil War), his starring role in the movies and as adman for gun-makers and insurance companies. And he demolishes the myths surrounding Santa Claus and Coca-Cola. Santa Claus: A Biography will stand as the classic work on the long-lived and multifarious Mr. Claus.
