Book Synopsis Santa Claus by : Letlhokwa George Mpedi
Download or read book Santa Claus written by Letlhokwa George Mpedi and published by African Sun Media. This book was released on 2020-11-30 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origins of Santa Claus, or so I am told, is that the young Bishop Nicholas secretly delivered three bags of gold as dowries for three young girls to their indebted father to save them from a life of prostitution. Armed with immortality, a factory of elves and a fleet of reindeer, his has been a lasting legacy, inextricably linked to Christmas. Of course, this Christmas looks a little different. Amidst a global pandemic, shimmying down the chimneys of strangers certainly does not adhere to social distancing guidelines. Some borders remain closed, and in some instances, the quarantine period is far too long. After all, he only has 24 hours to spread cheer across the world. As with the rest of us, Santa Claus is likely to get the remote working treatment. The reindeers this year are likely to be self-driving, reminiscent of an Amazon swarm of technology, and the naughty and nice lists are likely to be based on algorithms derived from social media accounts. In the age of the fourth industrial revolution, it is difficult to imagine that letters suffice anymore. How many posts were verified as real before shared? Enough to get you a drone. Fake news? Here is a lump of coal. Will we see elves in personal protective equipment (PPE) and will Santa Claus, high risk because of age and his likely comorbidities from the copious amount of cookies, have to self-isolate in the North Pole? In fact, will there be any toys at all this year? Surely production has been stalled with the restrictions on imports and exports into the North Pole. Perhaps, there is a view to outsourcing, or perhaps, there is a shift towards local production and supply chains. More importantly, as we have done in many instances in this period, maybe we should pause to reflect on the current structures in place. The sanctification of a figure so clearly dismissive of the Global South and to be critical, quite classist must be called into question. From some of the keenest minds, the contributions in this book make a strong case against this holly jolly man. We traverse important topics such as, is the constitution too lenient with a clear intruder who has conveniently branded himself a Good Samaritan? Allegations of child labour under the guise of elves, blatant animal cruelty, constant surveillance in stark contrast to many democratic ideals and his possible threat to national security come to the fore. Nevertheless, as the song goes, he is aware when you are asleep, and he knows when you are awake. Is feminism a farce to this beloved man – what role does Mrs Claus play and why are there inherent gender norms in his toys? Then is the worry of closed borders and just how accurate his COVID-19 tests are. Of course, this brings his ethics into question. While there is an agreement that transparency, justice and fairness, nonmaleficence, responsibility, and privacy are the core ethical principles, the meaning of these principles differs, particularly across countries and cultures. Why are we subject to Santa Claus’ notions of good and evil when he is so far removed from our context? As Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein would tell you, this is fundamentally a nudge from Santa Claus for children to fit into his ideals. A nudge, coined by Thaler, is a choice that predictably changes people’s behaviour without forbidding any options or substantially changing their economic incentives. Even with pinched cheeks and an air of holiday cheer, Santa Claus has to come under scrutiny. In the process of decolonising knowledge and looking at various epistemologies, does Santa still make the cut?

Book Synopsis Diary of a Dystopian Era by : Lois Larkey
Download or read book Diary of a Dystopian Era written by Lois Larkey and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2021-09-10 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LOCKDOWN! That shocking word ushered in a surreal time for Lois Larkey. It was March 11, 2020, and there was a pandemic, a killing virus, the first in one hundred years. Like everyone else, Lois had to shelter in place, wear a mask and totally separate from friends and family. Living alone in her apartment she was afraid of catching Covid-19 and dying alone in a hospital. She had to find something that would help her work through her fears. The idea of chronicling the tragedy, brought on by a virus and exacerbated by a divisive president, was compelling. Lois began writing her blog, The Larkey Lowdown, with an eye to capturing unfolding history. The election of 2020 brought a bizarre rejection of the longtime American tradition of “peaceful transfer of power.’ Lois kept writing. January 6th brought the violent storming of the Capitol in the name of the president who lost the election. Our democracy was threatened. Lois, horrified and heartbroken, kept writing. January 20th, the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris, brought a new administration and hope for the future. Inauguration Day signaled an optimistic time to lay down her pan and search for perspective. Diary of a Dystopian Era is a fascinating collection of Lois Larkey’s blog entries that describe the tumultuous events of the years 2020-2021 in real time.
Book Synopsis O Brave ‘New Normal’ World by : Steve Gleadhill
Download or read book O Brave ‘New Normal’ World written by Steve Gleadhill and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2023-10-22 with total page 936 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pandemic has encompassed and infested every aspect of our lives – our health, our institutions, our relationships with other countries, our perception of our leaders, our planet and our future. We innocently fell headlong into lockdowns and the ensuing pandemonium unaware of just how pervasively it would shatter the fragility of our daily lifestyles and expose our strengths and weaknesses. The series of 4 books covers not just the immediate catastrophic impact but also the longer-term corollaries of the pandemic. It is not intended to be a ‘specialist’ analysis of just one aspect of the virus but provides a layman’s perspective of the ramifications and interconnections that emanated from the crisis. I began documenting events - in part to fill in the time during our enforced confinement - and have continued recording events for nearly 3 years, as more and more unforeseen facets of the pandemic materialised on an almost daily basis. This particular book concentrates on the immediate impact the virus had on our lives.

Book Synopsis The COVID-19 Crisis and Entrepreneurship by : David B. Audretsch
Download or read book The COVID-19 Crisis and Entrepreneurship written by David B. Audretsch and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-07-14 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2020 introduced a global pandemic that led to global economic, social, and regional lockdowns affecting public life in ways never been imagined before. This book takes a look at how researchers from fields encompassing economics and political science, along with thought leaders in business and economic policy, experienced the crises themselves as experts in their field, as well as from a personal viewpoint. Most importantly, however, it looks into the future how entrepreneurship and economic policies may change and positively influence the societies and the economy after the pandemic. Keeping in mind that, with climate change and the digital revolution, change was already around the corner and inevitable, renowned economic and policy experts are asked for their assessment of future roads and feasible economic policies. The book follows the chronology of the pandemic and focuses on leading researchers and thought leaders in public policy and business. An introduction to each chapter describes the context particular to the contributing author when the pandemic struck and their own reactions, experiences, and insights triggered by the emerging pandemic.
Download or read book COVID Societies written by Deborah Lupton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-04-03 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: COVID Societies presents a compelling and accessible overview of key sociocultural theories that can help us make sense of the diverse, dynamic and complex elements of the COVID crisis. These include discussions of the political economy perspective; biopolitics; risk society and cultures; gender and queer theory; and more-than-human theory. The book provides insights into everyday life around the world as people battled with containing the pandemic and explores the broader historical, social, cultural and political contexts in which these responses have developed. COVID-19 is the most serious pandemic to affect the world in the past century. We have all lived in ‘COVID societies’, the long-term effects of which have yet to be experienced or imagined. The COVID crisis has affected countries, regions within countries and social groups within regions in strikingly different ways. These impacts are continually changing, just as the novel coronavirus has mutated into different strains and variants. Throughout the book, a series of intertwined threads cross back and forth between the macropolitical and micropolitical dimensions of COVID-19: contagion, death, risk, uncertainty, fear, social inequalities, stigma, blame and power relations. Overarching these threads are five complementary themes: the historicity of COVID societies; the tension between local specificities and globalising forces; the control and management of human bodies; the boundary between Self and Other; and the continuously changing sociomaterial environments in which the world is living with and through the shocks of the COVID crisis. This book will be of great interest to anyone seeking to understand the manifold complex sociocultural consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Book Synopsis Social Work and the Arts by : Sela Amit
Download or read book Social Work and the Arts written by Sela Amit and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This collection of writings on social work and the arts was borne during extraordinary and uncertain times. The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic had brought the world to a standstill - most of us were hunkered down, if lucky, able to work from home yet feeling isolated and collectively lonely; others lost their jobs and yet others were on the frontlines fighting a heretofore unknown yet perniciously contagious disease. At the same time, precipitated by sequential killings of several black men and women at the hands of law enforcement, racial tensions in the U. S. erupted. Fueled by a culture more politically divided than ever, people defied the virus taking to the streets demanding racial equity, justice, and inspiring hope that social change was (is?) possible"--
Book Synopsis Local Government and the COVID-19 Pandemic by : Carlos Nunes Silva
Download or read book Local Government and the COVID-19 Pandemic written by Carlos Nunes Silva and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-03 with total page 799 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a global perspective of local government response towards the COVID-19 pandemic through the analysis of a sample of countries in all continents. It examines the responses of local government, as well as the responses local government developed in articulation with other tiers of government and with civil society organizations, and explores the social, economic and policy impacts of the pandemic. The book offers an innovative contribution on the role of local government during the pandemic and discusses lessons for the future. The COVID-19 pandemic had a global impact on public health, in the well-being of citizens, in the economy, on civic life, in the provision of public services, and in the governance of cities and other human settlements, although in an uneven form across countries, cities and local communities. Cities and local governments have been acting decisively to apply the policy measures defined at national level to the specific local conditions. COVID-19 has exposed the inadequacy of the crisis response infrastructures and policies at both national and local levels in these countries as well as in many others across the world. But it also exposed much broader and deeper weaknesses that result from how societies are organized, namely the insecure life a substantial proportion of citizens have, as a result of economic and social policies followed in previous decades, which accentuated the impacts of the lockdown measures on employment, income, housing, among a myriad of other social dimensions. Besides the analysis of how governments, and local government, responded to the public health issues raised by the spread of the virus, the book deals also with the diversity of responses local governments have adopted and implemented in the countries, regions, cities and metropolitan areas. The analysis of these policy responses indicates that previously unthinkable policies can surprisingly be implemented at both national and local levels.
