Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I've Always Kept a Unicorn tells the story of Sandy Denny, one of the greatest British singers of her time and the first female singer-songwriter to produce a substantial and enduring body of original songs. Sandy Denny laid down the marker for folk-rock when she joined Fairport Convention in 1968, but her music went far beyond this during the seventies. After leaving Fairport she formed Fotheringay, whose influential eponymous album was released in 1970, before collaborating on a historic one-off recording with Led Zeppelin - the only other vocalist to record with Zeppelin in their entire career - and releasing four solo albums across the course of the decade. Her tragic and untimely death came in 1978. Sandy emerged from the folk scene of the sixties - a world of larger-than-life characters such as Alex Campbell, Jackson C. Frank, Anne Briggs and Australian singer Trevor Lucas, whom she married in 1973. Their story is at the core of Sandy's later life and work, and is told with the assistance of more than sixty of her friends, fellow musicians and contemporaries, one of whom, to paraphrase McCartney on Lennon, observed that she sang like an angel but was no angel.

Each Unit is based on a topic useful for new immigrants like "The Noisy Neighbor" or "The Burglar". Every Unit begins with a series of pictures meant to be copies on to light card stock and cut into card sets. This is followed by a randomized card set of key words and another of sentences. Students are meant to sequence the pictures and invent the story, then match key words to pictures and revise their story. More advanced students can match the pictures with the sentence cards and to read the story to a partners. This if followed by a correct sentence sequence so students can read it silently and orally and adjust their picture stories if needed. Next we have a word scramble to reinforce vocabulary learning and scrambled sentences to build grammar and syntax awareness. The unit concludes with a listening exercise to further reinforce learning. The total two-hour lesson is quick and easy to prepare yet is engaging and involving so students participate eagerly. This is a handy book that all teachers of Beginner ESL will want to have.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dolly Parton's success as a performer and pop culture phenomenon has overshadowed her achievements as a songwriter. But she sees herself as a songwriter first, and with good reason. Parton's compositions like "I Will Always Love You" and "Jolene" have become American standards with an impact far beyond country music. Lydia R. Hamessley's expert analysis and Parton’s characteristically straightforward input inform this comprehensive look at the process, influences, and themes that have shaped the superstar's songwriting artistry. Hamessley reveals how Parton’s loving, hardscrabble childhood in the Smoky Mountains provided the musical language, rhythms, and memories of old-time music that resonate in so many of her songs. Hamessley further provides an understanding of how Parton combines her cultural and musical heritage with an artisan’s sense of craft and design to compose eloquent, painfully honest, and gripping songs about women's lives, poverty, heartbreak, inspiration, and love. Filled with insights on hit songs and less familiar gems, Unlikely Angel covers the full arc of Dolly Parton's career and offers an unprecedented look at the creative force behind the image.

Book excerpt: Could a Christian legitimately be compared to a sand crab? Sandy Haney would say yes for several reasons. Sand crabs spend much of their time near the shore, where the crashing waves are relentless. While sand crabs only move backward, they keep looking forward. And finally, sand crabs burrow into the sand to prevent being washed away by powerful waves but hold on to the shore until the end. Sandy Haney's Sand Crab Sentiments is a collection of inspirational poetry that will encourage even the weariest Christian to keep looking forward and endure to the end. Sandy's passion for the Lord and his Word is evident in her poems about life, death, love, happiness, and everything in between. She has been used as God's pen to bring hope to the hopeless and strength to the weak. Sand Crab Sentiments includes uplifting poems for any situation you may find yourself in, whether delightful or dismal, droll or deep. Immerse yourself in these Sand Crab Sentiments, and you'll soon realize that this crustacean's perspective is one to emulate.
