From dark Loch Ness to the turbulent waters of the Pentland Firth, join Bruce on the path less travelled as he goes behind the scenes of Shetland's Up Helly Aa festival and the raucous Kirkwall Ba' Game, played for generations by the people of Orkney. There are also stops in remote townships - Helmsdale in the east, distant Glenelg in the west - visiting the crofts and castles that make Scotland so special. Throughout these exceptional tales, Bruce Sandison's love for his native land shines through as he brings the people, culture and history of Scotland to life. Sandison's Scotland is full of hidden gems and is a book for all times and all seasons. It will captivate, amuse and delight anyone with a love for Scotland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With more than its fair share of dramatic mountains, moorlands, lochs and rivers, Scotland is famously one of the most beautiful countries in the world. It is also known for the unique quality of its field sports, widely available to both visitor and local alike; wonderful salmon rivers, myriad brown trout lochs, grouse moors and outstanding red deer stalking. And throughout this wild countryside are the stalkers, gillies and keepers - men who have spent their whole lives on river, moor and hill caring for the iconic wildlife Scotland has to offer. In Glorious Gentlemen Bruce Sandison takes us on a magical journey around Scotland, as seen through the eyes of some of the country's best-known and most respected gillies, stalkers and keepers. The stories they have to tell are full of humour, kindliness and patience as - sometimes under difficult circumstances - they help their guests, old and young alike, novice or experienced, in pursuit of the best possible chance of sport. Celebrating a way of life that has existed in Scotland for many hundreds of years, Glorious Gentlemen is a book for all seasons, of stories and tales told by the men who made them, all of which are, of course, true - and some even truer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steve Bruce here presents a highly readable account of the changing nature and place of religion in Scotland in an increasingly irreligious society. In 1900 Scotland was a largely Presbyterian country and the Christian churches were a major social force. Now less than 10 per cent of Scots attend church. As religion has declined, it has become more varied: Catholicism has grown as have Charismatic Christian fellowships; Buddhist and Hindu themes have 'easternised' our religious vocabulary; a significant Muslim population has become established; and a notable number of Scots now pursue personal spiritual interests in forms which would once have been dismissed as pagan. Both this decline and the diversification deserve explanation. The Protestant-Catholic divide has faded but Scots have new controversies over the proper public place of religion in the light of growing secularization and diversification. The growth of individual liberty and increasing cultural diversity combine to weaken all shared beliefs by changing religion from a social matter into a private personal concern. All religious groups are faced with the choice of either accommodating that trend and losing their distinctiveness or resisting it and making membership too costly for most potential adherents. This radical remapping of Scotland's religious character is a fascinating summary of a remarkable career of research and analysis by one of Scotland's leading social historians.Topics include: Lewis, Orkney and Shetland compared; the integration of the Irish; the growth and decline of the Catholic Church; Scotland Orange and Protestant; the Post-War Kirk; factionalism in the conservative Presbyterian churches; the failure of the charismatic movement in Scotland; Samye Ling and Buddhism; Findhorn and New Age spirituality; Scots Muslims; and arguments over the ordination of women and gay rights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scottish novelist Jane Duncan's semiautobiographical My Friends series was dismissed by postwar critics as lightweight, at a time when a coterie of "angry young men" monopolized the attention of the British publishing establishment. Yet deeper themes are at play in the 19 novels. Modern readers will recognize feminist motifs, a wide-ranging examination of women's education and work in the 20th century, a woman's view of the rising societal tensions of the 1920s and 1930s, and an outsider's perspective on the racial divide in the soon-to-be-independent West Indies. This book explores Duncan's body of work, out of print for decades, though sought by loyal fans. Her characters run the gamut--drunken tinkers, Lowland housewives, Irish miners, members of the London fast set and English marchionesses, all portrayed with telling detail. Her novels--two of them recently reprinted for a new generation--reveal a charming and perceptive recorder of the changes Great Britain underwent in the past century.
