Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American manufacturing has been on the decline for at least two generations. That fact is plain to any observer who travels through the Rust Belt of the Midwest, where the closing of steel plants and automobile factories has created ghost towns that dot the landscape. It is also clear from the dormant New England textile mills, whose owners surrendered their production first to cheaper mills in the Southeast before they, in turn, lost out to Asian labor. What caused this calamity, and what can be done about it? Andrew O. Smith argues that we lost our manufacturing not simply to forces beyond our control, such as globalization and cheaper labor overseas, but as the result of misguided policies that are well within our abilities to reform for the benefit of manufacturing. Examining six areas of public policy—the tax system, health care, the legal system, workers' compensation, government regulations, and labor policy—Smith demonstrates that in each of these areas, current policy choices have created a hostile environment for manufacturing. Grounding his arguments not in polemic or ideology but in historical analysis and current research, Smith illustrates his points with real-world examples to show how a New Social Compact can fix the problems that manufacturers face, without sacrificing public policy goals.

This challenge grows more intense every day, and an organization can only move as quickly as its leaders. This book shows you how to get your ideas, plans, and needs disseminated quickly from the top down"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metaphors in audiovisual media receive increasing attention from film and communication studies as well as from linguistics and multimodal metaphor research. The specific media character of film, and thus of cinematic metaphor, remains, however, largely ignored. Audiovisual images are all too frequently understood as iconic representations and material carriers of information. Cinematic Metaphor proposes an alternative: starting from film images as affective experience of movement-images, it replaces the cognitive idea of viewers as information-processing machines, and heals the break with rhetoric established by conceptual metaphor theory. Subscribing to a phenomenological concept of embodiment, a shared vantage point for metaphorical meaning-making in film-viewing and face-to-face interaction is developed. The book offers a critique of cognitive film and metaphor theories and a theory of cinematic metaphor as performative action of meaning-making, grounded in the dynamics of viewers' embodied experiences with a film. Fine-grained case studies ranging from Hollywood to German feature film and TV news, from tango lesson to electoral campaign commercial, illustrate the framework’s application to media and multimodality analysis.

Book excerpt: In keeping with its tradition of sending writers out into America to take the pulse of our citizens and civilization, The New Yorker over the past decade has reported on the unprecedented economy and how it has changed the ways in which we live. This new anthology collects the best of these profiles, essays, and articles, which depict, in the magazine's inimitable style, the mega-, meta-, monster-wealth created in this, our new Gilded Age. Who are the barons of the new economy? Profiles of Martha Stewart by Joan Didion, Bill Gates by Ken Auletta, and Alan Greenspan by John Cassidy reveal the personal histories of our most influential citizens, people who affect our daily lives even more than we know. Who really understands the Web? Malcolm Gladwell analyzes the economics of e-commerce in "Clicks and Mortar." Profiles of two of the Internet's most respected analysts, George Gilder and Mary Meeker, expose the human factor in hot stocks, declining issues, and the instant fortunes created by an IPO. And in "The Kids in the Conference Room," Nicholas Lemann meets McKinsey & Company's business analysts, the twenty-two-year-olds hired to advise America's CEOs on the future of their business, and the economy. And what defines this new age, one that was unimaginable even five years ago? Susan Orlean hangs out with one of New York City's busiest real estate brokers ("I Want This Apartment"). A clicking stampede of Manolo Blahniks can be heard in Michael Specter's "High-Heel Heaven." Tony Horwitz visits the little inn in the little town where moguls graze ("The Inn Crowd"). Meghan Daum flees her maxed-out credit cards. Brendan Gill lunches with Brooke Astor at the Metropolitan Club. And Calvin Trillin, in his masterly "Marisa and Jeff," portrays the young and fresh faces of greed. Eras often begin gradually and end abruptly, and the people who live through extraordinary periods of history do so unaware of the unique qualities of their time. The flappers and tycoons of the 1920s thought the bootleg, and the speculation, would flow perpetually—until October 1929. The shoulder pads and the junk bonds of the 1980s came to feel normal—until October 1987. Read as a whole, The New Gilded Age portrays America, here, today, now—an epoch so exuberant and flush and in thrall of risk that forecasts of its conclusion are dismissed as Luddite brays. Yet under The New Yorker's examination, our current day is ex-posed as a special time in history: affluent and aggressive, prosperous and peaceful, wired and wild, and, ultimately, finite.

Book excerpt: A brand new collection of state-of-the-art insights into transforming healthcare, from world-renowned experts and practitioners… now in a convenient e-format, at a great price! Making American healthcare work: 3 new eBooks get past ideology to deliver real solutions! Even after Obamacare, America’s healthcare system is unsustainable and headed towards disaster. These three eBooks offer real solutions, not sterile ideology. In Overhauling America's Healthcare Machine: Stop the Bleeding and Save Trillions, leading healthcare expert and entrepreneur Douglas A. Perednia identifies the breathtaking complexity and specific inefficiencies that are driving the healthcare system towards collapse, and presents a new solution that protects patient and physician freedom, covers everyone, and won’t bankrupt America. Perednia shows how to design a far simpler system: one that delivers care to everyone by drawing on the best of both market efficiency and public "universality" — and is backed with detailed logic and objective calculations. Next, in Improving Healthcare Quality and Cost with Six Sigma, four leading experts introduce Six Sigma from the standpoint of the healthcare professional, showing exactly how to implement it successfully in real-world environments. The first 100% hands-on, start-to-finish blueprint for succeeding with Six Sigma in healthcare, this book covers every facet of Six Sigma in healthcare, demonstrating its use through examples and case studies from every area of the hospital: clinical, radiology, surgery, ICU, cardiovascular, laboratories, emergency, trauma, administrative services, staffing, billing, cafeteria, even central supply. Finally, in Reengineering Healthcare: A Manifesto for Radically Rethinking Healthcare Delivery JimChampy (“Reengineering the Corporation”) and Dr. Harry Greenspun show how reengineering methodologies can deliver breakthrough performance and efficiency improvements both within individual healthcare organizations and throughout the entire system, eliminating much of the 40%+ of U.S. healthcare costs now dedicated to administration. They demonstrate how reengineering can refocus investments on aligning quality and providing accessible care for millions more people. From world-renowned healthcare management experts Dr. Doug Perednia, Praveen Gupta, Brett E. Trusko, Carolyn Pexton, H. James Harrington, Jim Champy, and Harry Greenspun, M.D.

Book excerpt: "Except for my clinical experiences at Camp Maxey, I had not handled live patients since I was a fourth-year medical student & even then under several layers of supervision...I lacked a plan (in the battalion Aid Station) for those who really needed medical attention...I therefore decided that I would utilize my two well-trained technicians to the fullest extent, evacuate to a rear area anyone whom I thought was seriously ill, & ask my mother to send me the book she kept on the shelf in the kitchen: What to Do Until the Doctor Comes." Dr. Graham's highly acclaimed career as a pathology professor, research scientist & physician at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has spanned fifty years. This surprisingly humorous autobiography of an Army doctor during World War II is based on more than 200 letters written to his wife, mother & aunt. Objectivity & a wry sense of humor carried him through the ugliness of war, even in the most life-threatening situations. Full of delightful anecdotes, it offers a fresh perspective of a bygone era - different from the viewpoints of the media or "the Brass." Book excerpt: This collection of poetry is a sharing of simple gifts. Almost twenty years ago, when the first of my poems popped up on a journal page—that odd shift from prose to poetry—I thought it an aberration. But in the years since, poems jotted on journal pages, grocery slips, post-its, and Amtrak napkins, have come to serve as a presence, a guide, a way for me to pay attention to life. And the poems have become increasingly a part of my work in the world. So I share these personal poems, these reflections, with you in hopes that you might find support, comfort, insight and connection in their words, recognizing the way our human joys and struggles link us across time and distance. (And perhaps you might find the poet's voice within yourself, as well) Some readers may recognize a poem here and there from collections published informally over the years and circulated among friends and colleagues. And you may see a familiar poem from an anthology or an earlier books of mine. This collection of "simple gifts" is meant to reflects the natural ups and downs of life, the joys and sorrows, the power of people, place and nature. It is also a testimony to the dedicated efforts of my husband David, without whose appreciation, stewardship, project management and determination, this collection would have remained simply a pile of loose poems on the office shelf. Why does the Training Room Program in German schools impede the development of an empowering learning culture? What experiences transpire during a train trip to the sea with an unruly crew of school boys? Or: what happens when children plan a trip on their own? Anyone who has accumulated experiences in teaching faces creative choices when putting that legacy to paper. The author chose to use this selection of studies to illustrate formative and inspirational moments from his years as a dedicated teacher and father.
