Book excerpt: All my books can be read online free at wayneodonnell.com. “Freely you have received, freely give” (Mt. 10:8). This booklet is included in and comprises one section of my book Physical and Spiritual Salvation: Justification, Sanctification, Glorification, the Messianic Kingdom, & Ezekiel’s Temple in Ezekiel 40-48, Matthew, Romans, & 1 John. Like most books and passages in the Bible, the topic is given in the first few verses. “The Gospel [good news] of God,” Rom. 1:1. More specifically the “salvation” (Rom. 1:18) God provided us. The main proposition of Romans is that all who have been justified, are being sanctified, and will be glorified - guaranteed, because of the way in which they were justified by having been joined in union with Messiah and thus sharing without fail in both forgiveness through his death and the power of his resurrection life. “We were buried with him by [union] into [his] death, so that ... we will also walk in [his] newness of [resurrection] life,” Rom. 6:4. “The gospel ... is the power of God to [all of] salvation [justification, sanctification, and glorification] to every one that believes ..., because therein is revealed the righteousness of God [justification],” Rom. 1:16-17. Our sanctification and glorification are guaranteed because of our justification. The salvation God provided to us in Jesus (Yeshua in Hebrew, which means ‘salvation’), is also comprised of both spiritual and physical parts. Justification and sanctification are spiritual; but glorification, like also resurrection, is physical. God’s workings with Israel are also in the physical realm. “Israelites; to whom pertains the [national] adoption, and the [shekinah] glory, and the [Abrahamic, Land, Davidic, and New] covenants, and the giving of the [Mosaic] law, and the [temple] service of God, and the promises [throughout the Old Testament]; ... and of whom as concerning the flesh Messiah came,” Rom. 9:4-5. The realm where genealogies matter. “I ... am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin,” Rom. 11:1. So much misinterpretation of scripture, like that of Reformed Theology, is due to their felt need to leave the principle of literal interpretation of scripture because of their failure to differentiate between things like personal spiritual salvation and national physical salvation. Spiritual Salvation: “Having been justified by faith [past spiritual event of justification], we have had our access ... into this grace wherein we stand [present spiritual process of sanctification];” Physical Salvation: “and rejoice in hope of the glory of God [future physical event of glorification],” Romans 5:1-2.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians generally recognize the need to live a holy, or sanctified, life. But they differ on what sanctification is and how it is achieved. How does one achieve sanctification in this life? How much success in sanctification is possible? Is a crisis experience following one's conversion normal--or necessary? If so, what kind of experience, and how is it verified? Five Views on Sanctification--part of the Counterpoints series--brings together in one easy-to-understand volume five major Protestant views on sanctification: Wesleyan View – represented by Melvin E. Dieter Reformed View – represented by Anthony A. Hoekema Pentecostal View – represented by Stanley M. Horton Keswick View – represented by J. Robertson McQuilkin Augustinian-Dispensationalism View – represented by John F. Walvoord Writing from a solid evangelical stance, each author describes and defends his own understanding of the doctrine sanctification and then responds to the views of the other authors. The Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many popular views try to reduce the process of Christian growth to a single template: Remember past grace. Rehearse your identity in Christ. Avail yourself of the means of grace. Discipline yourself. But Scripture portrays the dynamics of sanctification in a rich variety of ways. No single factor, truth, or protocol can capture why and how a person is changed into the image of Christ. Weaving together personal stories, biblical exposition, and theological reflection, David Powlison shows the personal and particular ways that God meets you where you are to produce change. He highlights the variety of factors that work together, helping us to avoid sweeping generalizations and pat answers in the search for a key to sanctification. This book is a go-to resource for understanding the multifaceted, lifelong, personal journey of sanctification.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Calvin inherited the doctrines of the medieval Roman Church. In particular, he inherited that Church's view of the law of God, given to Israel through Moses on Sinai. Calvin took the Church's teaching on this, as it had been developed by Thomas Aquinas, and tweaked it to produce a Reformed threefold-use of the law in the new covenant. Some Anabaptists and others resisted him at the time, but they were heavily out-gunned, and Calvin's system has dominated the Reformed and evangelical world ever since. Millions, who have never read a word of Calvin, many of whom would shudder at the very mention of his name, nevertheless, are, on the law, Calvinists - even though they may not know it. David Gay contends that Calvin was wrong on the law, and this has had serious consequences. Gay is concerned, in particular, with the Reformer's third use of the law - which is, said Calvin, to sanctify the believer. Gay disagrees. In his book, 'Christ is All', he probed Calvin's system, exposed it to the light of Scripture, and showed where it departed from the New Testament. He also demonstrated the utter inadequacy of the escape routes used by the Reformed to get round awkward passages of Scripture. Turning from the negative, Gay then looked at every major New Testament passage dealing with the believer and the law. Next, he set out scriptural teaching on the true way of sanctification for the believer. This, he showed, is not by the law of Moses; rather, it is by the law of Christ in the hands of the Holy Spirit. Indeed, as Gay made clear, the law of Christ is, ultimately, Christ himself. Hence his chosen title: 'Christ is All'. Having set out the believer's rule, he then answered seven objections levelled against it. This present volume, the second in the 'Brachus Sanctification Series', is Gay's chapter on Romans drawn from his 'Christ is All: No Sanctification by the Law', edited to enable it to stand on its own. He has published this work because Romans 6, 7 and 8 is where, in his clearest and most extended biblical exposition of the believer's relationship to it, Paul shows - with devastating cogency - that sanctification is not by the law. In other words, Romans demolishes Calvin's threefold use of the law! In publishing this work, Gay is making a key part of his argument on the law more widely accessible, and, at the same time, hoping to contribute to a right understanding of this vital portion of Scripture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study contends that the single thread that runs through Romans 6-8 is that of sanctification, which is explained in terms of a life that is transformed by the grace of God. The author argues that a proper understanding of Romans 7 requires that one situate it firmly in the context of the life of freedom from sin in Chapter 6, as well as a life of freedom by the Holy Spirit in Chapter 8. In terms of its contemporary relevance, Paul's view of holiness in Romans 6-8 is grounded in relationship with God, involving separation, commitment, and ethical purity. It is a call to the Roman Christians, and by implication, believers in our present day, to live an alternative lifestyle, to be a model of God's holiness, in order to make him known to the wider society. This conclusion is tested in the Pauline corpus by examining various passages. A picture of Paul's view of holiness that is consonant with the message of Romans 6-8 emerges from this study. For Paul, holiness must not be reduced to theological propositions but is to be understood as a quality to be demonstrated in the lives of those who are called by the name of the Lord.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reader’s delight, A Scandalous Freedom sometimes shocks with challenges to prevailing wisdom, but it follows up with compelling validations of our need to celebrate real, unstinted freedom in Christ. Christians do not trust freedom. As author Steve Brown explains in this brave new book, they prefer the security of rules and self-imposed boundaries, which they tend to inflict on other Christians. Brown asserts that real freedom means the freedom to be wrong as well as right. Christianity often calls us to live beyond the boundaries, bolstered by the assurance that we cannot fall beyond God’s love. Freedom is dangerous, but the alternative is worse—boxing ourselves up where we cannot celebrate our unique gifts and express our joy in Christ. Each of the book’s eleven chapters explores a common pharisaic, freedom-stifling tendency, then opens the door to the fresh air of a remedial liberty.
