Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the missions is a compelling human drama that is a vital piece not only of California history, but also of American history. Indeed, many keys to California's past lie in the stories of the 20 missions that stretch along the state's west coast from San Diego to San Francisco. This vital series is compatible with the mission-based curriculum used in fourth-grade California classrooms. It resonates equally with all social studies programs that explore the defunct notion of colonialism and its controversial role in the history of the United States, and with curricula that seek to explore the interaction of different cultures and the rights and voices of indigenous peoples.

Book excerpt: The rugged San Gabriel Mountains, rising starkly from the edge of the Los Angeles Basin, provide a sharp contrast to the hustle and bustle of the city and its surroundings. Angelinos across the county (a population of almost 10 million), as well as visitors from out of state, welcome the opportunity to escape from city chaos into the quiet wilderness. This 9th edition of the classic Wilderness Press guide has been revised and updated to reflect recent trail changes, and now includes trips in the Fish Canyon Narrows, along Alder Creek, and to Jones Peak, as well as perennial favorites such as Old Baldy, Mt. Wilson, and Devils Punchbowl. Each detailed trip description notes the distance, difficulty, and ideal season, and points out the highlights of the trail. The guide includes a companion 4-color waterproof topo map.

Book excerpt: San Gabriel is often referred to as the birthplace of the Los Angeles region. The areas first inhabitants were native peoples often called Gabrieleo because of their association with the San Gabriel Mission, which was founded in 1771; the mission became the fourth and most productive of the 21 California missions built along El Camino Real. Saloons and gambling halls arrived during the Wild West era, and shoot-outs became commonplace. Joshua Bean owned one such saloon until his 1852 murder. His brother, the future judge Roy Bean, inherited and operated his Headquarters Saloon until Roy was run out of town by local authorities. The vintage images in this book chronicle San Gabriel through the 20th century, covering city growth and oddities, including early resident William Money, the regions first documented cult leader and founder of the Moneyan Institute, and the infamous Man From Mars bandit, who terrorized the community with grocery store robberies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This field guide to the flora of the San Gabriel Mountains of southern California is at once a personal and entertaining account of the region's botanical context and history of exploration, and a long-awaited inventory of its flora. The author, Orlando Mistretta, grew up at the foot of this mountain range and has spent the past four decades of his botanical career exploring the far corners of this exceedingly rugged mountain range located in close proximity to Greater Los Angeles. Over 30 color photographs and maps accompany a detailed introduction to all aspects of the San Gabriels, including physical setting, project boundaries and history of its botanical exploration. Keys to plant families, genera, species and subspecific ranks are carefully formulated to be accessible to both botanical professionals and generalists. Species entries include information on taxonomic authorities, life form, abundance, habitat (vegetation types [including post-burn occurrences] and elevation), localities of occurrence (list of specific canyons and other locations), and a representative herbarium voucher. Notes on possible hybridization, historical records, alternative taxonomy and native versus introduced status are included. An index lists families, genera and species. This book is part of the Occasional Publications series published by Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden in Claremont, California, the largest botanic garden dedicated to California native flora.

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2009 Book Award in Social Sciences, Association for Asian American Studies This innovative work provides a new model for the analysis of ethnic and racial settlement patterns in the United States and Canada. Ethnoburbs—suburban ethnic clusters of residential areas and business districts in large metropolitan areas—are multiracial, multiethnic, multicultural, multilingual, and often multinational communities in which one ethnic minority group has a significant concentration but does not necessarily constitute a majority. Wei Li documents the processes that have evolved with the spatial transformation of the Chinese American community of Los Angeles and that have converted the San Gabriel Valley into ethnoburbs in the latter half of the twentieth century, and she examines the opportunities and challenges that occurred as a result of these changes. Traditional ethnic and immigrant settlements customarily take the form of either ghettos or enclaves. Thus the majority of scholarly publications and mass media covering the San Gabriel Valley has described it as a Chinatown located in Los Angeles’ suburbs. Li offers a completely different approach to understanding and analyzing this fascinating place. By conducting interviews with residents, a comparative spatial examination of census data and other statistical sources, and fieldwork—coupled with her own holistic view of the area—Li gives readers an effective and fine-tuned socio-spatial analysis of the evolution of a new type of racially defined place. The San Gabriel Valley tells a unique story, but its evolution also speaks to those experiencing a similar type of ethnic and racial conurbation. In sum, Li sheds light on processes that are shaping other present (and future) ethnically and racially diverse communities. The concept of the ethnoburb has redefined the way geographers and other scholars think about ethnic space, place, and process. This book will contribute significantly to both theoretical and empirical studies of immigration by presenting a more intensive and thorough "take" on arguments about spatial and social processes in urban and suburban America.

Book excerpt: 2019 Paterson Prize winner Skipping Stones Book Award Kirkus Reviews' Best YA Historical Fiction of 2018 A river runs through young Manny Maldonado Jr.’s life, heart and imagination. Sometimes at night it even shoots through his brain like a bullet. But this river isn’t water, it’s iron—the tracks and trains of the Southern Pacific railroad that pass along his tight-knit neighborhood in the San Gabriel valley just ten miles east of L.A. The iron river is everything to Man-on-Fire, Man for short to his friends, Little Man to his uncles and cousins. He watches it, he waits for it, he plays nears its tracks, he listens for the weight of its currents (strong currents flowing east pulling two hundred boxcars, light current going west with less than fifty cars), he whiles away long summer days throwing rocks and bricks at it with his friends Danny, Marco and Little. They line up cans and bottles in mock battles to try to throw it off track. But nothing derails the iron river, and nothing stops the stinking cop Turk from trying to pin a hobo’s murder on the four young boys.
