Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year was 1936. The Depression was at its height. San Diego--then considered nothing more than a sleepy border town--had always desired to become a "big city." Securing a major professional baseball franchise would be the first step in fulfilling this dream. Finally, San Diego took that first step by securing a team in the fabled Pacific Coast League. After a community-wide contest, the team was christened the San Diego Padres. That team turned out to be not only an interesting ballclub, but also a very good one. In retrospect, the club was even more remarkable. Two of its players--Bobby Doerr and Ted Williams, aka "The Kid"--became members of the Natinal Baseball Hall of Fame. They had one of the DiMaggio brothers roaming the outfield. Another outfielder played alongside Babe Ruth on the 1927 Yankees. To quote Bobby Doerr: "It was quite a team." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The San Diego Padres became a National League expansion team in 1969. Through 37 seasons of play, the Padres have never won a World Series, never had a pitcher throw a no-hitter, and never had a player hit for the cycle. They have, however, made it to the World Series twice, had three different pitchers win the Cy Young Award, and had a player tie Honus Wagner for most National League batting titles (eight). They almost lost the franchise to Washington, D.C., had an owner take the public address microphone on opening day to blast his own players, and created national headlines when a nationally-known comedienne performed her version of the national anthem before a game.Longtime Padres announcer Bob Chandler knows the details behind all of these stories and shares his memories with San Diego baseball historian Bill Swank in an easy-to-read recap of the team's colorful past. They also look at many other stories: sick and severely dehydrated on the trainer's table, Ken Caminiti had an IV removed from his arm, ate a Snickers bar, then hit two home runs against the New York Mets in Mexico; the comic relief provided by the San Diego Chicken during the Padres lean years; and how popular Padre Tim Flannery became the mascot - a cross between a dinosaur and an anteater.Chandler and Swank utilize their numerous contacts to bring fans many inside stories and humorous anecdotes dating back to the team's actual birth on May 27, 1968. Eight-time batting champion Tony Gwynn and Cy Young Award-winner Randy Jones are among the former players providing insight and inside stories. Chandler's longtime broadcast partner Jerry Coleman, elected to the broadcasters' wing of the baseball Hall of Fame in 2005, has written the foreword. A colorful collection of owners, managers, coaches, and players over the years lends themselves to many interesting tales from the dugout, which all adds up to an informative, insider's look at the behind-the-scenes events that have shaped the history of the San Diego Padres.

Book excerpt: The first color action photo of Ted Williams (as shown on the front cover) was taken at Lane Field in San Diego on October 5, 1941 by an amateur photographer. Nobody knew of its existence until an old wooden cigar box was found in a basement in 1999. This book is a treasure chest of such old San Diego baseball pictures and memories. From the Padres to Petco focuses on San Diego's love affair with the Padres from the Pacific Coast League years at Lane Field (1936-57), Westgate Park (1958-67), San Diego Stadium (1968) and through 35 more exciting and often exasperating National League summers in Mission Valley (1969-2003). Through it all, Padre fans have been faithful and forgiving. With a new ballpark, San Diego looks to build a winning tradition.

Book excerpt: Deep into the Great Depression, two events changed the face and heartbeat of San Diego. The first was the 1935 Panama-California Exposition at Balboa Park and the other came a year later when the Pacific Coast League Hollywood Stars baseball team relocated to San Diego and became the Padres. Expo 2 Padres 1 continues a story first begun in 1915 as told in the author's historical novel SanDiegoland: When Wonderland took on the World. That was the year of the first exposition, the Panama-California Exposition in Balboa Park. Now, 20 years have passed and Pete Adamson, his wife Grace and son Hank and daughter Althea find their lives intertwined with the Expo and their friends Guey and Ling Lu, owners of two downtown restaurants in San Diego's Chinese district. Pete is the Deputy Superintendent for the City Parks Department, Grace is a reporter for a San Diego newspaper, Hank is a professional baseball player assigned to the Knoxville Smokies and Althea works at San Diego's largest department store. Much to the displeasure of her mother she begins a romantic relationship with the Lu's son, Yong and later Althea's mother has a humbling experience that breaks down her racist attitude toward the Chinese. The reader lives the adventure of San Diego during the Depression and how the Exposition with all its innovations and controversies helped shape the city to what it is today. The story then goes behind the scenes to show how San Diego landed its first professional baseball team when the Hollywood Stars relocated to San Diego and Lane Field was built along the waterfront. In the story, after having helped build the Warren ballpark near Bisbee, Arizona, Pete must decide if he wants to be part of constructing Lane Field. The reader will see what it took to bring a 17-year-old high school phenom to the Padres' roster, a boy by the name of Ted Williams who went on to be a Baseball Hall of Fame player for the Boston Red Sox. As the story unfolds, Pete Adamson's son, Hank moves up the ladder in the minor leagues, a journey that finds him competing for a spot on the Padres team. Throughout the story, the lives of the Lu and Adamson family blend and sometimes clash with experiences that range from comical to near tragedy. Ying Lu, the family matriarch keeps everyone on their toes wondering what will be the next outrageous words to come out of her mouth. Expo 2 Padres 1 is a page-turning journey in the lives of people who strive to be true to their faith, family and friends. For some, their faith is tested to the ultimate, while others, who are not ready to have faith as their foundation struggle to find life's crucial answers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The San Diego Padres Encyclopedia is the first comprehensive history of one of Major League Baseball's most fascinating franchises. From its roots as a National League expansion team in 1969 through the 2000 season, this new book covers the team's entire season-by-season history on the field, including its World Series appearances in 1984 and 1998. The team's greatest stars -- Tony Gwynn, Dave Winfield, Trevor Hoffman, Randy Jones, Nate Colbert, Steve Garvey, Ken Caminiti, and nearly a hundred others -- are fully chronicled, as are Padre celebrities such as Ray Kroc, Dick Williams, and Jerry Coleman. Much of the authors' biographical information was collected through personal interviews. The San Diego Padres Encyclopedia delineates the team's greatest milestones in its "This Date in Padre History" section, lists the franchise's all-time transactions, and chooses the Padres' all-time "dream team." The appendix of the book includes an all-time Padres roster and the most comprehensive statistical history of the Padres ever published.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Think you know how the game of baseball began? Think again. Forget Abner Doubleday and Cooperstown. Did baseball even have a father--or did it just evolve from other bat-and-ball games? John Thorn, baseball's preeminent historian, examines the creation story of the game and finds it all to be a gigantic lie. From its earliest days baseball was a vehicle for gambling, a proxy form of class warfare. Thorn traces the rise of the New York version of the game over other variations popular in Massachusetts and Philadelphia. He shows how the sport's increasing popularity in the early decades of the nineteenth century mirrored the migration of young men from farms and small towns to cities, especially New York. Full of heroes, scoundrels, and dupes, this book tells the story of nineteenth-century America, a land of opportunity and limitation, of glory and greed--all present in the wondrous alloy that is our nation and its pastime.--From publisher description.
