But Goethe had made it clear that a second marriage of his daughter in-law would entail a complete severance of all relations with her. In the meanwhile, the intimacy with Naylor was continued in letters, which grow more affectionate as time goes on. Naylor, it appears, had kept Ottilie informed of his travels, of his doings in Gottingen, even of his relations to other women. There is an interesting letter of his from Rotterdam of March 19, 1831, with an account of a visit to A. W. Von Schlegel in Bonn, which confirms Heine's im pressions of the professor-critic.
