Book Synopsis Haunting the Deep by : Adriana Mather

Book excerpt: The delicious horror of Ransom Riggs and the sass of Mean Girls meets Titanic in this follow-up to the #1 New York Times bestseller How to Hang a Witch, in which a contemporary teen finds herself a passenger on the famous “ship of dreams”—a story made all the more fascinating because the author’s own relatives survived the doomed voyage. Samantha Mather knew her family’s connection to the infamous Salem Witch Trials might pose obstacles to an active social life. But having survived one curse, she never thought she’d find herself at the center of a new one. This time, Sam is having recurring dreams about the Titanic . . . where she’s been walking the deck with first-class passengers, like her aunt and uncle. Meanwhile, in Sam’s waking life, strange missives from the Titanic have been finding their way to her, along with haunting visions of people who went down with the ship. Ultimately, Sam and the Descendants, along with some help from heartthrob Elijah, must unravel who is behind the spell that is drawing her ever further into the dream ship . . . and closer to sharing the same grim fate as its ghostly passengers. Praise for How to Hang a Witch: “It’s like Mean Girls meets history class in the best possible way.” —Seventeen “Mather shines a light on the lessons the Salem Witch Trials can teach us about modern-day bullying—and what we can do about it.” —Bustle.com “Strikes a careful balance of creepy, fun, and thoughtful.” —NPR “I am utterly addicted to Adriana Mather’s electric debut. It keeps you on the edge of your seat, twisting and turning with ghosts, witches, an ancient curse, and—sigh—romance. It’s beautiful. Haunting. The characters are vivid and real. I. Could. Not. Put. It. Down.” —Jennifer Niven, bestselling author of All the Bright Places

Book Synopsis The House on Lorri Lane: A Family Haunting by : Elizabeth Trombley
Download or read book The House on Lorri Lane: A Family Haunting written by Elizabeth Trombley and published by America Star Books. This book was released on 2010-04-20 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old houses always have a history, either good or bad. Faint traces are left behind of events that occurred while people lived and died in these houses. A sound, smell or a feeling reminds us that we are in the same space they once occupied, just a different time period. Usually nothing of concern but, sometimes an event is so heinous that even death can not put to rest the sights and sounds that permeate the structure and eventually a haunting will take place. Is it a cry for help or merely a residual sequence, once uttered, and now sealed in the walls forever? I believe that loving spirits do indeed stay around us, and if we are open and listen we will encounter many in our lifetime. It should be a comfort to know that we are never alone, without support and love. Blessings are abundant for those who believe.

Download or read book The Haunted Screen written by Lee Kovacs and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2005-11-07 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While ghosts often inhabit films and literature devoted to the horror genre, a group of literature-based films from the 1930s and 1940s presents more human and romantic apparitions. These films provide the underpinnings for many of the gentle supernatural films of the 1990s. Tracing the links between specters as diverse as Rex Harrison's Captain Gregg and Patrick Swazye's Sam Wheat, the text presents the evolution of the cinematic-literary ghost from classic Gothic to the psychological, sociological, and political ideologies of today. Included are analyses of the literary and film versions of classic ghost stories--Wuthering Heights, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, Portrait of Jennie, Letter from an Unknown Woman, The Uninvited, Liliom, and Our Town--as well as interpretations of modern films not based on literary works that show the influence of these predecessors--Ghost and Truly, Madly, Deeply. The text includes stills, a bibliography, and an index.

Download or read book Post-Westerns written by Neil Campbell and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the post-World War II period, the Western, like America's other great film genres, appeared to collapse as a result of revisionism and the emergence of new forms. Perhaps, however, as theorists like Gilles Deleuze suggest, it remains, simply "maintaining its empty frame." Yet this frame is far from empty, as Post-Westerns shows us: rather than collapse, the Western instead found a new form through which to scrutinize and question the very assumptions on which the genre was based. Employing the ideas of critics such as Deleuze, Jacques Derrida, and Jacques Rancière, Neil Campbell examines the haunted inheritance of the Western in contemporary U.S. culture. His book reveals how close examination of certain postwar films--including Bad Day at Black Rock, The Misfits, Lone Star, Easy Rider, Gas Food Lodging, Down in the Valley, and No Country for Old Men--reconfigures our notions of region and nation, the Western, and indeed the West itself. Campbell suggests that post-Westerns are in fact "ghost-Westerns," haunted by the earlier form's devices and styles in ways that at once acknowledge and call into question the West, both as such and in its persistent ideological framing of the national identity and values.
