Book excerpt: Dr. Patricia Peterson, a promising young archeology professor at Berkeley, has made an astounding disovery--an unspoiled tomb in the Valley of the Kings. She and her academic partner, Dr. Roberta Burns, are just tidying up the details of the dig with Egypt's Department of Antiquities when Pat must fly home to Palo Alto, California for her sister's wedding. On the eve of her return to Egypt,a violent stormy night, Roberta lands on the doorstep of Pat's brother's home, demanding Pat's half to the combination for the locked gate to the tomb. Pat refuses. A struggle ensues, complicated by the loyal intervention of Pat's sheepdog, Sam, leaving Pat dying, Sam injured, and Roberta without the combination. Sam-dog, the welcome guest of Pat's brother and family, and the unwelcome pest of the family cat, Samantha, must not only recover from his wounds and accept the death of his master, but overcome his hatred and mistrust for Samantha the cat. Sam-cat, too, must swallow her distaste for the canine species, become Sam-dog's partner, and communicate Roberta's treachery to her human family before Roberta returns, putting what is left of her family in danger.

Book excerpt: This book is about the six lovely Samoyeds with whom I have shared my heart and my home over the last 27 years. Zara was my first Samoyed, she was a beautiful dog but very naughty She did an awful lot of damage to the house and to personal property. Not to mention the incident with the police. She should have put me off the breed altogether, but, fortunately, she did not. After Zara, there was Max, Tia, Siani, Tsar and Misty. This is their story. We now have only Tsar and Misty, we have just returned from our walk. The sun was shining and it was really warm. Tsar and my husband went round the fields at 90 miles an hour, Misty and myself walked at a much more leisurely pace. We ambled along, Misty stopped every few yards to sniff the ground, perhaps she had picked up the trail of a fox. I gazed at the luscious green grass in the fields around me, I saw the vast assortment of wild flowers and berries growing in the hedgerow and watched the various species of butterflies. It was peaceful and tranquil, the silence broken only by the whistling and chirping of the many varieties of birds. Just for a short while, at least, all seemed well with the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From two of the world’s leading authorities on dogs, an imaginative journey into a future of dogs without people What would happen to dogs if humans simply disappeared? Would dogs be able to survive on their own without us? A Dog’s World imagines a posthuman future for dogs, revealing how dogs would survive—and possibly even thrive—and explaining how this new and revolutionary perspective can guide how we interact with dogs now. Drawing on biology, ecology, and the latest findings on the lives and behavior of dogs and their wild relatives, Jessica Pierce and Marc Bekoff—two of today’s most innovative thinkers about dogs—explore who dogs might become without direct human intervention into breeding, arranged playdates at the dog park, regular feedings, and veterinary care. Pierce and Bekoff show how dogs are quick learners who are highly adaptable and opportunistic, and they offer compelling evidence that dogs already do survive on their own—and could do so in a world without us. Challenging the notion that dogs would be helpless without their human counterparts, A Dog’s World enables us to understand these independent and remarkably intelligent animals on their own terms.

This book was released on 2010-03-10 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human–animal bond has evolved and diversi?ed down the ages. Dogs, cats and even horses, have long ful?lled the role of faithful companion and indeed, as exempli?ed by the introduction of seeing and hearing dogs, there may be a critical level of co-dependency between the species. In the twenty-?rst century, the animal types that are kept as pets in many parts of the world are extensive ranging from reptiles through rodents to ruminants and beyond. As would be predicted by the nature of the relationship, the approach to treatment of a companion animal is often closely aligned to that which would have been offered to their owner. However, an increasing awareness of welfare issues, such as the recognition that animals expe- ence pain and the proven bene?ts of disease prevention in intensive farming units, together with the growth in zoos and wildlife parks, has increased the likelihood of food producing and non-domesticated animals receiving medicinal products during their life-time. Although many of the individual drugs or classes of drugs administered to animals are the same as, or derived from, those given to man, the safe and effective use of drugs in animals often cannot be achieved by simply transposing knowledge of drug action on, or behaviour in, the body from one species to another. The impact of the anatomical, physiological and pathophysiological variability that spans the animal kingdom can often profoundly alter drug response.

Book excerpt: “I know firsthand the desperation a human soul can feel when every earthly remedy fails. I also know how powerfully God can intervene when we fall on our faces before him.” —Sheila WalshTalented and beautiful, Sheila Walsh seemed to be on top of the world. But behind her public success as a performing artist and talk show host, a private story was unfolding. Unable to cope with the inner turmoil that plagued her, Sheila stepped down as co-host of television’s 700 Club to deal with a pain too pressing to ignore. Honestly takes you on a journey past the walls that most of us put up and into the recesses of one woman’s heart. With rare grace, Sheila shares the story of her pilgrimage—the journey of a soul as it moved from hopelessness, to honesty, to freedom, and, ultimately, to a life of deepened faith and joy.
