Book excerpt: The goal of this project was to develop simple but effective sampling equipment and procedures for collecting, handling, storing, and recording samples of hazardous wastes. The report describes a variety of sampling devices designed to meet the needs of those who regulate and manage hazardous wastes. Particular emphasis is given to the development of a composite liquid waste sampler, the Coliwasa. This simple device is designed for use on liquid and semi-liquid wastes in a variety of containers, tanks, and ponds. Devices for sampling solids and soils are also described. In addition to the sampling devices, the report describes procedures for development of a sampling plan, sample handling, safety precautions, proper recordkeeping and chain of custody, and sample containment, preservation, and transport. Also discussed are certain limitations and potential sources of error that exist in the sampling equipment and the procedures. The statistics of sampling are covered briefly, and additional references in this area are given.

Book excerpt: Site Characterization Sampling and Analysis HMTRI Site Characterization: Sampling and Analysis is an introductory environmental sampling textbook intended for use in community/technical college environmental technology curricula or in industrial training programs. Comprehension of the subject matter is enhanced by associated coursework in chemistry, biology, environmental regulations, and college-level mathematics. The goal of the present textbook is to provide the environmental technician with the knowledge and skills necessary to assist a site characterization project planner in the sampling and monitoring process. Among the tasks the students will learn how to perform are: * assisting the research of a site's background for data that a project manager will use in the development of a site sampling plan * meeting representative sampling objectives and quality control/quality assurance objectives * preparing to go onsite for a sampling event * monitoring a site for potentially hazardous atmospheres * following the sampling plan in collecting samples from various media (e.g., soil, surface water, ground water, and containers) * troubleshooting under unforeseen circumstances * preparing samples for transport to the laboratory * documenting field activities * communicating with laboratory personnel * interpreting lab reports, including the validation of quality control data The text contains photographs and line drawings to help students visualize equipment and processes. Included are instructional aids such as chapter objectives, concept statements before major sections, review questions (as well as application and critical thinking activities) after each section, and a glossary of the terminology.

Download or read book Handling and Management of Hazardous Materials and Waste written by Theodore Allegri and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the safe and legal handling of hazardous materials and waste from the manufacturer's plant through the storage, transportation and distribution channels to the user, and, ultimately, to the disposal of the product or waste materials. There is increasing pressure today from the public, academia, government at all levels, and industry to improve the handling and management of hazardous materials. A knowledge of the methods required to safely handle and manage those materials in all of their various aspects, together with an understanding of the many governmental regulations that apply to those materials in the various stages of the distribution chain, is absolutely essential to their proper handling and disposal. Efficient handling and the safe management of hazardous materials requires an expertise in the skills and techniques of the latest innovations, which in turn are often based upon the firm foundation of data and experience in those areas. Personal and public safety require that the information concerning hazardous materials be disseminated as widely as possible. This document should not be used to determine compliance with the u.s. DOT hazardous material regulations, or with any other regulations imposed by loca\, State, or Federal regulatory bodies. T.H. Allegri, Sr.
