Book Synopsis Training Sammy by : Linda Farris Kurtz
Download or read book Training Sammy written by Linda Farris Kurtz and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Professor Kurtz retired, training a dog was the last thing on her mind, but a shaggy, black scamp called Sammy entered her life one day, and her world changed. The story tells how Sammy's new owner civilized his behavior through training at a local dog club. His aptitude for rally obedience enticed her to continue. Sammy, it turned out, was a pretty good competitor, except for his barking; it was Linda who had difficulty learning the sport. They spent an agonizing year attending one trial after another, while Linda gave unclear cues, got lost in the show ring, missed stations, and almost was tossed out of the sport altogether, until she finally began to qualify and earned a fine collection of ribbons. An introverted academic, she never quite fit in with the social world of dog people. But, in the end, she and Sammy triumphed. The book covers their first three years together. Linda Farris Kurtz's career as a practicing social worker and educator spanned forty-six years from 1958 to her retirement in 2004. After retiring, she adopted Sammy, the scrappy canine subject of her memoir. She lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan with Sammy and her husband, Ernest Kurtz, who is the author of several books, including The Spirituality of Imperfection, published by Bantam in 1993. Throughout their thirty-two year marriage, both Drs. Kurtz have researched and written on recovery from alcoholism and mental illness. Linda Farris Kurtz is the author of one other book, Self-help and Support Groups: A Handbook for Practitioners, published by Sage Publications in 1997.

Book Synopsis Saving Sammy by : Beth Alison Maloney
Download or read book Saving Sammy written by Beth Alison Maloney and published by Crown. This book was released on 2010-10-05 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of one mother’s fight against the medical establishment to prove the link between infection-triggered PANDAS and her son’s sudden-onset OCD and Tourette syndrome. The summer before entering sixth grade, Sammy, a bright and charming boy who lived on the coast of Maine, suddenly began to exhibit disturbing behavior. He walked and ate with his eyes shut, refused to bathe, burst into fits of rage, slithered against walls, and used his limbs instead of his hands to touch light switches, doorknobs, and faucets. Sammy’s mother, Beth, already coping with the overwhelming responsibility of raising three sons alone, watched helplessly as her middle child descended into madness. Sammy was soon diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and later with Tourette syndrome. Unwilling to accept the doctors’ prognoses for lifelong mental illness and repeated hospitalizations, Beth fought to uncover what was causing this decline. Beth’s quest took her to the center of the medical community’s raging debate about whether OCD and Tourette syndrome can be caused by PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections). With the battle lines firmly drawn, Beth searched until she found two cutting-edge doctors who answered that question with a definitive yes. Together, they cured Sammy. Five years later, he remains symptom free.

Book Synopsis Moving Pictures/Stopping Places by : David B. Clarke
Download or read book Moving Pictures/Stopping Places written by David B. Clarke and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2009-05-16 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobility has long been a defining feature of modern societies, yet remarkably little attention has been paid to the various 'stopping places'_hotels, motels, and the like_that this mobility presupposes. If the paradoxical qualities of fixed places dedicated to facilitating movement have been overlooked by a variety of commentators, film-makers have shown remarkable prescience and consistency in engaging with these 'still points' around which the world is made to turn. Hotels and motels play a central role in a multitude of films, ranging across an immensely wide variety of genres, eras, and national cinemas. Whereas previous film theorists have focused on the movement implied by road movies and similar genres, the outstanding contributions to this volume extend the recent engagement with space and place in film studies, providing a series of fascinating explorations of the cultural significance of stopping places, both on screen and off. Ranging from the mythical elegance of the Grand Hotel, through the uncanny spaces of the Bates motel, to Korean 'love motels,' the wealth of insights, from a variety of theoretical perspectives, that this volume delivers is set to change our understanding of the role played by stopping places in an increasingly fluid world.
