Book excerpt: Sally is a sleek, slim and simply stunning slug . . . and she knows it. She can't resist reminding her neighbour, Dave, that he's just a common fat slug who spends his time sleeping sideways in his own slime. But when Sally's life is at stake, will Dave step in and save the day? A terrific tongue-twister of a tale written and illustrated by Felice Arena. Felice Arena is the creator of many best-selling books, including the Specky Magee series. This is his first picture book.

Book excerpt: Judy invited Jim and I to sit down saying, "I'm Judy and this is my sister Sally." We squeezed in with them and I ended up next to Sally. I still remember the warmth of her body next to me...it felt very good... As we talked Judy suddenly said, "Why don't we take a drive up to Tipton cemetery...it's kind of fun and scary!" We all piled in Judy's car (I think it really belonged to Max Hunter, Judy's boyfriend or maybe fiance). I don't remember the seating except that I was in the back seat, again pressing against this girl named Sally who laughed a lot with her warm body sending a feeling inside me that even to this day I cannot explain except to say, "It was good...very good!" We stopped in front of the cemetery that had a chain across the entrance (very dark and spooky). The challenge was to walk inside among the graves in the dark. We crept only a short distance beyond the chain when Judy said, "Ok! Let's go back!" I was walking close to Sally and made sure I was sitting by her on the way back to Arcadia. When we made the turn onto Main Street it caused me to press very tight against her. I wanted to say "Wow! That felt good!" But I chickened out and only said "Tight turn...huh?" ...Sally was just beginning her freshman year at Jackson Central and I was a sophomore. She became a cheerleader and the next year home-coming queen and I was dating her and played football and that's as good as it gets...except when I gave her an engagement ring! We stood up with Max and Judy when they were married and they stood up with us the next year. Please tell Judy (somewhere in heaven) thanks for inviting Jim and me to join them that night in the restaurant... ...THIS IS DAVE AND SALLY'S COMPLETE LOVE STORY...

Dave Hollis used to think that “personal growth” was just for broken people, then he woke up. When a looming career funk, a growing drinking problem, and a challenging trek through therapy battered Dave Hollis, a Disney executive and father of four, he began to realize he was letting untruths about himself dictate his life. As he sank to the bottom of his valley, he had to make a choice. Would he push himself out of his comfort zone to become the best man he was capable of being, or would he play it safe and settle for mediocrity? In Get Out of Your Own Way, Dave tackles topics he once found it difficult to be honest about, things like his struggles with alcohol and his insecurities about being a dad. Offering encouragement, challenges, and a hundred moments to laugh, Dave will help you: Discover the way for those of us who are, like he was, skeptical of self-help but wanting something more than the status quo Drop negative ideas about who we are supposed to be and finally start living as who we really are See our own journeys more clearly as he unpacks the lies he once believed—such as “I Have to Have It All Together” and “Failure Means You’re Weak” Learn the tools that helped him change his life, and may change your life too Get Out of Your Own Way is a call to arms for anyone who’s interested in a more fulfilled life, who, along the way, may have lost their “why” and now wonders how to unlock their potential or be better for their loved ones.

Book excerpt: There’s been a revolution in negotiating tactics. The world’s best negotiators have moved beyond How to Win Friends & Influence People and Getting to Yes. For over twenty years. David Sally has been teaching the art of negotiation at leading business schools and to executives at top companies. Now, he delivers the proven, clear, actionable insights you need to stay competitive in an ever-changing marketplace. One Step Ahead offers the fundamental wisdom that elevates the sophisticated negotiator above everyone else. Readers will gain the advantage in everything from determining when to negotiate and deciphering a game strategically, to understanding which personality traits matter, why emotions are not necessarily to be avoided, and how to be tough and fair. You’ll learn to be round on the outside and square on the inside, how to command the idiom, why to avoid bumping into the furniture, and how to achieve mastery of the word and the number. While all of life is not a negotiation, Sally says, a negotiation incorporates all of life—One Step Ahead is for anyone and everyone who bargains, parents, manages, buys, sells, emotes, and engages. Based on cutting-edge studies and real-world results, and drawing parallels to everything from the NBA to the corner con game to Machiavelli, Xi Jinping, and Barack Obama, One Step Ahead upends conventional wisdom to make sure that you have what it takes to stay one step ahead—no matter whom you are facing across the table.

Book excerpt: This book is what the world needs now, from a voice we need to hear. Sally Mann is the fourth of five generations living and ministering in one East End community, with a PhD and five lifetimes of stories. Her experiences will make you laugh, cry and, if you pay attention, help you see how much-needed change can happen...Sally brilliantly connects Biblical characters with contemporary people and shows how these individuals have helped shape over 150 years of her family's ministry in one East London neighbourhood.' Ash BarkerExecutive Director Red Letter Christians UKSally and Dave love their community. They have a jealous passion to see it thrive. They have resilience which comes from long-term commitment; knowing their dreams of what God might do will take more than a few years of committed service, but decades, and perhaps generations, to achieve. They seek deep transformation in the places they serve - bringing structural changes like good education, just governance, and improving the health and well-being of all their neighbours. Alongside this they have built lively, inclusive, Christian congregations. We should listen to their story.Steve ChalkeFounder & Leader Oasis GlobalIn all the window dressing around how to fix the church or make it more connected to our massively disruptive times Looking for Lydia changes the conversation. It turns most of our pretensions on their head as it brings us back to the God who radically meets us in the other. The story in this book is grounded in the practiced life of a community of God's people. I can't recommend it more highly. It's the disruptive Spirit calling us to God's future. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of the "wrenching and exhilarating" All Things Cease to Appear comes a gripping literary thriller about a man reckoning with the mysterious death of his former roommate (Wall Street Journal). Julian Ladd and Rye Adler cross paths as photography students in the exclusive Brodsky Workshop. When Rye needs a roommate, Julian moves in, and a quiet, compulsive envy takes root, assuring, at least in his own mind, that he will never achieve Rye’s certain success. Both men are fascinated with their beautiful and talented classmate, Magda, whose captivating images of her Polish neighborhood set her apart, and each will come to know her intimately – a woman neither can possess and only one can love. Twenty years later, long after their paths diverge, Rye is at the top of his field, famous for his photographs of celebrities and far removed from the downtrodden and disenfranchised subjects who’d secured his reputation as the eye of his generation. When Magda reenters his life, asking for help only he can give, Rye finds himself in a broken landscape of street people and addicts, forcing him to reckon with the artist he once was, until his search for a missing boy becomes his own desperate fight to survive. Months later, when Julian discovers Rye’s obituary, the paper makes it sound like a suicide. Despite himself, Julian attends the funeral, where there is no casket and no body. This sudden reentry into a world he thought he left behind forces Julian to question not only Rye’s death, but the very foundations of his life. In this eerie and evocative novel, Elizabeth Brundage establishes herself as one of the premiere authors of literary fiction at work today.

Book excerpt: A Sunday Times Book of the Year ‘A memoir as soulful, wryly witty, and lyrical as it is candid and courageous’ – Booklist, starred review ‘Impressive, candid and vivid’ The Times ‘Beautifully written’ Sunday Times Sally Field is one of the most celebrated, beloved and enduring actors of our time, and now she tells her story for the first time in this intimate and haunting literary memoir. In her own words, she writes about a challenging and lonely childhood, the craft that helped her find her voice, and a powerful emotional legacy that shaped her journey as a daughter and a mother. Sally Field has an infectious charm that has captivated audiences for more than five decades, beginning with her first television role at the age of 17. From Gidget’s sweet-faced ‘girl next door’ to the dazzling complexity of Sybil to the Academy Award-winning ferocity and depth of her role in Norma Rae and Mary Todd Lincoln, Field has stunned audiences time and time again with her artistic range and emotional acuity. Yet there is one character who always remained hidden: the shy and anxious little girl within. With raw honesty and the fresh, pitch-perfect prose of a natural-born writer, and with all the humility and authenticity her fans have come to expect, Field brings readers behind the scenes for not only the highs and lows of her star-studded early career in Hollywood, but deep into the truth of her lifelong relationships including, most importantly, her complicated love for her own mother. Powerful and unforgettable, In Pieces is an inspiring and important account of life as a woman in the second half of the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2021 15th Annual Indie Excellence Juror's Choice Award Winner “The Best Part of Us by Sally Cole-Misch is a lush debut novel which explores nature, family, and land with nuance and patience.” —Affinity Magazine Beth cherished her childhood summers on a pristine northern Canadian lake, where she reveled in the sweet smell of dew on early morning hikes, the loons’ evening trills across the lake’s many bays, every brush stroke of her brother’s paintings celebrating their cherished place, and their grandfather’s laughter as he welcomed neighbors to their annual Welsh harvest celebration. Theirs was an unshakeable bond with nature, family, and friends, renewed every summer on their island of granite and pines. But that bond was threatened and then torn apart, first as rights to their island were questioned and then by nature itself, and the family was forced to leave. Fourteen years later, Beth has created a new life in urban Chicago. There, she’s erected a solid barrier between the past and present, no matter how much it costs—until her grandfather asks her to return to the island to determine its fate. Will she choose to preserve who she has become, or risk everything to discover if what was lost still remains? The Best Part of Us will immerse readers in a breathtaking natural world, a fresh perspective on loyalty, and an exquisite ode to the essential roles that family, nature, and place hold in all of our lives.
