Download or read book Coleridge Notebooks V3 Text written by Kathleen Coburn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-16 with total page 727 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2002. Volume 3 of the Text on the Notebooks of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, spanning from 1808 to 1819. The volume is in two parts, text and notes. During his adult life until his death in 1834, Coleridge made entries in more than sixty notebooks. Neither commonplace books nor diaries, but something of both, they contain notes on literary, theological, philosophical, scientific, social and psychological matters, plans for and fragments of works and many other items of great interest. Shortly after World War II, Kathleen Coburn, formerly of Victoria College in Toronto, rediscovered this great collection of unpublished manuscripts. With the support of the Coleridge estate, she embarked on a career of editing and publishing these volumes and was awarded with many honours for her work, including: a Leverhulme Award (1948), a Guggenheim Fellowship (1953), a Fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada (1958), the Order of Canada (1974) and an honorary doctorate from her own university. Originally projected as a five volume set (each volume consisting of a book of text and a book of notes).

The encyclopedia provides a complete reference tool for examining the myriad ways people worldwide celebrate their religious lives across religious boundaries, providing information on numerous celebratory activities never before covered in a reference work. Offering the most comprehensive coverage of religious holidays ever assembled, this two-volume book covers festivals, commemorations, holidays, and annual religious gatherings all over the world, with special attention paid to the celebrations in larger countries. Entries written by distinguished researchers and specialists on different religious communities capture the unique intensity of each event, be it fasting or feasting, frenzied activity or the universal cessation of work, a huge gathering of the faithful en masse or a small family-centered event. The work spotlights celebrations that currently exist without overlooking now-abandoned celebrations that still impact the modern world.

Book Synopsis The Development of the Italian Schools of Painting by : Charlotte Van Marle
Download or read book The Development of the Italian Schools of Painting written by Charlotte Van Marle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the sudden and immature death of the Author, this work, which was planned to comprise 2I volumes has had to end with the I8th. From a number of students and art critics requests have reached the publisher and myself that an index should be made of the volumes which have been published. Herein their desire has been satisfied. This general index is divided into two parts: one for names of places, so that with the greatest ease and without loss of time the student can find all the Italian paintings from early Christian times up to the end of the Quattrocento, which are scattered throughout the churches, galleries and private collections of Europe and America. For the larger towns the material is divided into the following headings: I Churches and Monasteries. II Public Collections. III Public Buildings and Streets. IV Private Collections. and this order, though not indicated, has always been followed for the smaller localities. The second division contains the names of artists, each one accom panied by dates and where possible an indication of the site of his activity. The chief aim of this index is to make it easier to consult the enormous amount of material treated in the I8 volumes. For the traveller who desires to know what paintings are to be found in any town this index should be a valuable vade-mecum.

Book excerpt: It rises suddenly out of the Sonoran Desert landscape, towering over the tallest tree or cactus, a commanding building with a sensuous dome, elliptical vaults, and sturdy bell towers. There is nothing else like it around, nor does it seem there should be. This incongruity of setting is what strikes first-time visitors to Mission San Xavier del Bac. This great church is of another place and another time, while its beauty is universal and timeless. Mission San Xavier del Bac is a two-century-old Spanish church in southern Arizona located just a few miles from downtown Tucson, a metropolis of more than half a million people in the American Southwest. A National Historic Landmark since 1963, the missionÕs graceful baroque art and architecture have drawn visitors from all over the world. Now Bernard FontanaÑthe leading expert on San XavierÑand award-winning photographer Edward McCain team up to bring us a comprehensive view of the mission as weÕve never seen it before. With 200 stunning full-color photographs and incisive text illuminating the religious, historical, and motivational context of these images, A Gift of Angels is a must-have for tourists, scholars, and other visitors to San Xavier. From its glorious architecture all the way down to the finest details of its art, Mission San Xavier del Bac is indeed a gift of angels.

Book Synopsis The Spanish Presence in Sixteenth-Century Italy by : Piers Baker-Bates
Download or read book The Spanish Presence in Sixteenth-Century Italy written by Piers Baker-Bates and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixteenth century was a critical period both for Spain’s formation and for the imperial dominance of her Crown. Spanish monarchs ruled far and wide, spreading agents and culture across Europe and the wider world. Yet in Italy they encountered another culture whose achievements were even prouder and whose aspirations often even grander than their own. Italians, the nominally subaltern group, did not readily accept Spanish dominance and exercised considerable agency over how imperial Spanish identity developed within their borders. In the end Italians’ views sometimes even shaped how their Spanish colonizers eventually came to see themselves. The essays collected here evaluate the broad range of contexts in which Spaniards were present in early modern Italy. They consider diplomacy, sanctity, art, politics and even popular verse. Each essay excavates how Italians who came into contact with the Spanish crown’s power perceived and interacted with the wider range of identities brought amongst them by its servants and subjects. Together they demonstrate what influenced and what determined Italians’ responses to Spain; they show Spanish Italy in its full transcultural glory and how its inhabitants projected its culture - throughout the sixteenth century and beyond.
