Book excerpt: A model of a real-time simulation of a Remotely piloted Vehicle/Drone Control Facility (RPV/DCF) has been constructed using SAINT, a totally digital man-machine modeling and simulation technique. The real-time simulation consists of a mock-up of a DCF, where actual operators control the flight of simulated RPVs through the use of cathode ray tube (CRT) displays of RPB flight paths and parameters. The SAINT model consists of two interacting components. The state variable component of the model duplicated the simulation of RPV flight of the real-time simulation. The task-oriented component represents the control and decision tasks performed by the DCF operators. The interactions between the components include models of the presentation of mission status information to the operators and the processing of commands sent to the RPVs by the operators. Through input values, the generalized SAINT model is made specific to one group of operators performing one mission of the real-time simulation. This mission is simulated using SAINT. The simulation results are evaluated by comparing them with the mission performance output obtained from the real-time simulation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of a conference held in Freiburg, West Germany, September 22-25, 1980, entitled "Manned Systems Design, New Methods and Equipment". The conference was sponsored by the Special Programme Panel on Human Factors of the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO, and supported by Panel VIII, AC/243, on "Human and Biomedical Sciences". Their sponsorship and support are gratefully acknowledged. The contributions in the book are grouped according to the main themes of the conference with special emphasis on analytical approaches, measurement of performance, and simulator design and evaluat ion. The design of manned systems covers many and highly diversified areas. Therefore, a conference under the general title of "Manned Systems Design" is rather ambitious in itself. However, scientists and engineers engaged in the design of manned systems very often are confronted with problems that can be solved only by having several disciplines working together. So it was felt that knowledge about newly developed methods and equipment, applicable in the design process, is of common and increasing interest for all those who are engaged in the design of manned systems, from the earliest con ceptual design phases until operation under real circumstances. This seems to be particularly true in view of restricted resources of manpower and energy.

Book excerpt: Decision Information is a collection of manuscripts presented at the 1976 Workshop on Decision Information for Tactical Command and Control, held at the Airlie House in Airlie, Virginia. This workshop provides the scientific managers of the Service Office of Research with the knowledge allowing them to formulate research programs relevant to military problems in decision information. This book is organized into three parts encompassing 28 chapters. The first part consists of presentations in systems approach to large-scale human and man-machine systems, benefit-cost models for decision makers, team decision models, and cubic interpolation processes. The contributors highlight the various theoretical aspects of the models and illustrate their scientific usefulness to many problems in the society. The second part explores the statistical models in the areas of scheduling systems, combat models, logistic structures, inventory systems, Bayesian and empirical Bayesian reliability models, parameter estimation schemes, and memory models. This part also presents a broad spectrum of mathematical sciences that illustrate the two main facts that make most problems, namely, the number of variates in the model and the degree of uncertainty. The third part is devoted to military presentations, emphasizing the problem in command, control, and communication. This part also considers the implementation of fuzzy sets in military command analysis, decision support in a conflict environment, and data-poor modeling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of cognitive modeling has progressed beyond modeling cognition in the context of simple laboratory tasks and begun to attack the problem of modeling it in more complex, realistic environments, such as those studied by researchers in the field of human factors. The problems that the cognitive modeling community is tackling focus on modeling certain problems of communication and control that arise when integrating with the external environment factors such as implicit and explicit knowledge, emotion, cognition, and the cognitive system. These problems must be solved in order to produce integrated cognitive models of moderately complex tasks. Architectures of cognition in these tasks focus on the control of a central system, which includes control of the central processor itself, initiation of functional processes, such as visual search and memory retrieval, and harvesting the results of these functional processes. Because the control of the central system is conceptually different from the internal control required by individual functional processes, a complete architecture of cognition must incorporate two types of theories of control: Type 1 theories of the structure, functionality, and operation of the controller, and type 2 theories of the internal control of functional processes, including how and what they communicate to the controller. This book presents the current state of the art for both types of theories, as well as contrasts among current approaches to human-performance models. It will be an important resource for professional and student researchers in cognitive science, cognitive-engineering, and human-factors. Contributors: Kevin A. Gluck, Jerry T. Ball, Michael A.
