Book excerpt: The picture on the front cover of this book is of the former site of M. Jeff Thompson's (1826-1876) home on Fifth Street in St. Joseph, Missouri. Originally from Virginia, he moved first to Liberty, Missouri and then to St. Joseph in 1848. In St. Joseph, he began as a store clerk before becoming a surveyor and the city engineer. Thompson served as St. Joseph's mayor from 1857 to 1860 and presided over the ceremony initiating the first ride of the Pony Express on April 3, 1860. The following year, in May, he received national notoriety for cutting down the union flag over the St. Joseph post office and tossing it down to a crowd of southern sympathizers who tore it to pieces. In his capacity as a brigadier general of the First Division, Missouri State Guard, during the Civil War, his patrol covered the swampy area in the southeastern part of Missouri. His battalion was referred to as the "Swamp Rats" and Thompson became known as the "Swamp Fox of the Confederacy." Picture taken by Denise Bartles-Tapia. The Origin: In the Spring semester of 2010 I taught a college course that dealt with local cultural history. The class met at various historical locations throughout the City of St. Joseph, Missouri. Frequently, community members that were acquainted with the sites we visited would graciously discuss the historical and cultural significance of their particular place. As the class visited various places our numbers grew. Community people, including some who had discussed their site with the class, joined in our walks about town. As interest developed, I came up with the idea of publishing a book based on student stories about the history and culture of St. Joseph. Not only were students interested in this project but so too were the community members that had joined in our walks about town. In addition, as the word spread about this project, some historians familiar with the history of St. Joseph also wrote stories for inclusion in this book. The Editor: John Tapia received his Associate of Arts generalist degree from Pierce Junior College, California, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech Communication in 1972 from California State University, Northridge, a Master of Arts degree in Speech Communication in 1973 from the University of Massachusetts and a Doctorate of Philosophy degree, Speech Communication emphasis, in 1978 from the University of Arizona with minors in American History and Medical Statistics. He has published seven books including, most recently, Rhetoric and Centers of Power in the Greco-Roman World (University Press of America 2009) and Circuit Chautauqua: From Rural Education to Popular Entertainment (McFarland 1997, 2008). The latter book became the basis of the television documentary "Circuit Chautauqua: A Bridge Between Two Centuries." In addition, he has published twenty papers in scholarly journals and presented over seventy papers at scholarly conferences. He has also served at an editor for the Southern Speech Journal and the Quarterly Journal of Speech. Currently, he is working with the former Chief Diplomatic Interpreter of the White House and State Department on a book discussing various aspects of diplomatic communication. He has also been requested to write a sequel to Rhetoric and Centers of Power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though he speaks no words in Scripture, St. Joseph’s message to us is resounding: he wants to lead us to Jesus. In Through the Heart of St. Joseph, Fr. Boniface Hicks reveals the path St. Joseph has laid. Discover how St. Joseph’s vulnerability, littleness, silence, and hiddenness can transform and heal us. Fr. Hicks also looks to the saints who lived the “Joseph Option” to show how we too can embrace a life of humble trust and steadfast courage. Through the Heart of St. Joseph proves with quiet conviction that if we entrust ourselves to the foster father of Our Lord, he will give us his love and protection—just as he gave it to Jesus.

Book excerpt: The first book of its kind, Our Caribbean is an anthology of lesbian and gay writing from across the Antilles. The author and activist Thomas Glave has gathered outstanding fiction, nonfiction, memoir, and poetry by little-known writers together with selections by internationally celebrated figures such as José Alcántara Almánzar, Reinaldo Arenas, Dionne Brand, Michelle Cliff, Audre Lorde, Achy Obejas, and Assotto Saint. The result is an unprecedented literary conversation on gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered experiences throughout the Caribbean and its far-flung diaspora. Many selections were originally published in Spanish, Dutch, or creole languages; some are translated into English here for the first time. The thirty-seven authors hail from the Bahamas, Barbados, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Panama, Puerto Rico, St. Vincent, St. Kitts, Suriname, and Trinidad. Many have lived outside the Caribbean, and their writing depicts histories of voluntary migration as well as exile from repressive governments, communities, and families. Many pieces have a political urgency that reflects their authors' work as activists, teachers, community organizers, and performers. Desire commingles with ostracism and alienation throughout: in the evocative portrayals of same-sex love and longing, and in the selections addressing religion, family, race, and class. From the poem "Saturday Night in San Juan with the Right Sailors" to the poignant narrative "We Came All the Way from Cuba So You Could Dress Like This?" to an eloquent call for the embrace of difference that appeared in the Nassau Daily Tribune on the eve of an anti-gay protest, Our Caribbean is a brave and necessary book. Contributors: José Alcántara Almánzar, Aldo Alvarez, Reinaldo Arenas, Rane Arroyo, Jesús J. Barquet, Marilyn Bobes, Dionne Brand, Timothy S. Chin, Michelle Cliff, Wesley E. A. Crichlow, Mabel Rodríguez Cuesta, Ochy Curiel, Faizal Deen, Pedro de Jesús, R. Erica Doyle, Thomas Glave, Rosamond S. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Joseph of Copertino began having mystical visions at the age of seven, but it was not until he began practicing his faith as a Franciscan priest that he realized the full potential of his mind’s power over his body—he was able to levitate. Throughout his priesthood St. Joseph became famous for frequent levitations that were observed on hundreds of occasions and by thousands of witnesses, including many skeptics. Michael Grosso delves into the biography of the saint to explore the many strange phenomena that surrounded his life and develops potential physical explanations for some of the most astounding manifestations of his religious ecstasy. Grosso draws upon contemporary explorations into cognition, the relationship between the human mind and body, and the scientifically recorded effects of meditation and other transcendent practices to reveal the implications of St. Joseph’s experiences and abilities.

Book excerpt: In spring 1996, Saint Joseph's University hosted the exhibition "The Holy Family as Prototype of the Civilization of Love: Images from the Viceregal Americas," which commemorated the 75th anniversary of the introduction of the Feast of the Holy Family to the liturgical calendar of the Universal Church. The exhibition displayed paintings from the Spanish Colonial period, rare books and engravings from seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Europe, and lithographs and devotional paintings on tin from nineteenth-century Mexico and New Mexico. Culled from private collections, galleries in Miami, New York, Washington D.C., and institutional collections of several Catholic universities, these art works offered a visual chronicle of the evolution of devotion to the Holy Family.
