Book Synopsis Just the Usual Work by : Michael Boudreau
Download or read book Just the Usual Work written by Michael Boudreau and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2021-02-19 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in 1907, Ida Martin spent most of her life in Saint John, New Brunswick. She married a longshoreman named Allan Robert Martin in 1932 and they had one daughter. In the years that followed, Ida had a busy and varied life, full of work, caring for her family, and living her faith. Through it all, Ida found time to keep a daily diary from 1945 to 1992. Bonnie Huskins is Ida Martin's granddaughter. In Just the Usual Work, she and Michael Boudreau draw on Ida's diaries, family memories, and the history of Atlantic Canada to shed light on the everyday life of a working-class housewife during a period of significant social and political change. They examine Ida's observations about the struggles of making ends meet on a longshoreman's salary, the labour confrontations at the Port of Saint John, the role of automobiles in the family economy, the importance of family, faith, and political engagement, and her experience of widowhood and growing old. Ida Martin's diaries were often read by members of her family to reconstruct and relive their shared histories. By sharing the pages of her diaries with a wider audience, Just the Usual Work keeps Ida's memory alive while continuing her abiding commitment to documenting the past and finding meaning in the rhythms of everyday life.

Download or read book Dock Workers written by Sam Davies and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 875 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Workers who loaded and unloaded ships have formed a distinctive occupational group over the past two centuries. As trade expanded so the numbers of dock labourers increased and became concentrated in the major ports of the world. This ambitious two-volume project goes beyond existing individual studies of dock workers to develop a genuinely comparative international perspective over a long historical period. Volume 1 contains studies of 22 major ports worldwide. Built around an agreed framework of issues, these 'port studies' examine the type of workers who dominated dock labour, their race, class and ethnicity, the working conditions of dockers and the role of government as employer, arbitrator and supporter. The studies also detail how dockers organized their labour, patterns of strike action and involvement in political organizations. The structure of the port city is also outlined and descriptions given of the waterside environment. These areas of investigation form the basis for a series of 11 thematic studies which comprise Volume 2. Drawing on the information provided in the port studies, these essays identify important aspects and recurring themes, and explain how and why particular cases diverge from the rest. The final chapter of the book synthesizes the various approaches taken to offer a model which suggests several configurations of dock labour and presents suggestions for future research. This major scholarly achievement represents the most sustained attempt to date to provide a comparative international history of dock labour. An annotated bibliography completes this essential reference work.
Book Synopsis Federal Property Policy in Canadian Municipalities by : Michael C. Ircha
Download or read book Federal Property Policy in Canadian Municipalities written by Michael C. Ircha and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Federal property issues - especially those involving divestiture - create political disputes at all levels of government. Federal Property Policy in Canadian Municipalities analyzes the emergence of many of these issues involving military bases, airports, and other facilities in communities across Canada. With careful analysis the contributors show the underlying patterns and causes of these conflicts and their resolutions while emphasizing intergovernmental relations and the social forces that are active in property issues. Contributors examine general federal policy as well as issues pertinent to British Columbia, the Toronto waterfront, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador. The unprecedented number of cases discussed in these essays provides general conclusions and recommendations for a new orientation that will take local interests and preferences into account from the outset of decision-making. Public property is an understudied field of public policy, particularly as it concerns municipal government. Federal Property Policy in Canadian Municipalities presents a comprehensive treatment of federal property, changes in policy, and the effects these changes have on various levels of government. Contributors include Jeff Braun-Jackson (Memorial University of Newfoundland), Pierre Filion (University of Waterloo), Michael C. Ircha (University of New Brunswick), Leonard Wade Locke (Memorial University of Newfoundland), Robert MacKinnon (University of New Brunswick in Saint John), Kurt Peacock (University of New Brunswick in Saint John), Christopher Sanderson (Government of Manitoba), Tracy Summerville (University of Northern British Columbia), Stephen Tomblin (Memorial University of Newfoundland), Gary N. Wilson (University of Northern British Columbia), John Young (University of Northern British Columbia), and Robert A. Young (University of Western Ontario).
