This book was released on 2013-07-08 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection documents examples of distinctively Catholic theological beliefs or doctrines in the Eastern Church fathers; that is, ones in harmony with historic Catholic teaching but differing in some way from one or more strains of Protestant theology or Eastern Orthodox views. Quotations will be drawn from the Three Holy Hierarchs of Eastern Christian Tradition: St. Basil the Great (c. 330-379), St. John Chrysostom (c. 345-407), and St. Gregory Nazianzen (c. 330-c. 390). St. Athanasius (c. 297-373) is usually added to this list, and these are the Four Great Eastern Doctors of the Church. Additionally, the following four fathers are included: St. Cyril of Alexandria (c. 376-444), St. Ephraim (c. 306-373), St. Cyril of Jerusalem (c. 315-387), and St. John Damascene (c. 676-749). All eight men are Doctors of the Catholic Church. Quotations are drawn from public domain works and are found online at the Christian Classics Ethereal Library website.

Once this perspective is recognised, one can begin to understand ways in which the costs of corruption might be alleviated.

Download or read book Names as Metaphors in Shakespeare’s Comedies written by Grant W. Smith and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Names as Metaphors in Shakespeare’s Comedies' presents a comprehensive study of names in Shakespeare’s comedies. Although names are used in daily speech as simple designators, often with minimal regard for semantic or phonological suggestiveness, their coinage is always based on analogy. They are words (i.e., signs) borrowed from previous referents and contexts, and applied to new referents. Thus, in the literary use of language, names are figurative inventions and have measurable thematic significance: they evoke an association of attributes between two or more referents, contextualize each work of literature within its time, and reflect the artistic development of the writer. In the introduction, Smith describes the literary use of names as creative choices that show the indebtedness of authors to previous literature, as well as their imaginative descriptions (etymologically and phonologically) of memorable character types, and their references to cultural phenomena that make their names meaningful to their contemporary readers and audience. This book presents fourteen essays demonstrating the analytical models explained in the introduction. These essays focus on Shakespeare’s comedies as presented in the First Folio. They do not follow the chronological order of their composition; instead, the individual essays give special attention to differences between the plays that suggest Shakespeare’s artistic development, including the varied sources of his borrowings, the differences between his etymological and phonological coinages, the frequency and types of his topical references, and his use of epithets and generics. This book will appeal to Shakespeare students and scholars at all levels, particularly those who are keen on studying his comedies. This study will also be relevant for researchers and graduate students interested in onomastics. He can be reached at [email protected].

Download or read book Theology of God written by Dave Armstrong and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctrine of God remains as important as ever. The Apostle Paul rebuked the Corinthians in the first century for accepting "another Jesus" and "a different gospel" (2 Cor 11:4). Denial of the deity of Christ and the Holy Trinity were no doubt among the falsehoods condemned by Paul as "doctrines of demons" (1 Tim 4:1). Christians need to know the biblical basis for these beliefs, in view of the many historic heresies and recent fashionable nonsense such as open theism and process theology. My emphasis is on a listing of many scores of relevant Bible passages (systematic theology). Additionally, I attempt to explain "theology proper" in laymen's terms, so that, with the aid of this book, soaked with Scripture, anyone will be able to defend the biblical (and Nicene, Chalcedonian) truths of the Holy Trinity, Jesus as the incarnate God, and the divinity of the Holy Spirit. The coherence and truthfulness of orthodox, biblical theology of God is evident, the more these passages are understood.

Book excerpt: One of the most important works of twentieth-century British literature, The Good Soldier addresses the lives and interrelationships between two couples: one American, one British. A tragicomic novel of manners, in which John Dowell narrates the disintegration of both his own and another marriage, the work’s depiction of passion and intrigue offers an ironic reading of Edwardian-era values. The Broadview edition features the text of the first edition of the novel published by John Lane and The Bodley Head in 1915. It also includes: other writings by Ford Madox Ford (“On Heaven,” excerpts from Henry James: A Critical Study, “On Impressionism,” and “Techniques”); contemporary reviews; and Ezra Pound’s obituary of Ford Madox Ford.

Download or read book Talking about Race written by Isaac Adams and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conversations about racism are as important as they are hard for American Christians. Yet the conversation often gets so ugly, even among the faithful who claim unity in Jesus. Why is that the case? Why does it matter? Can things get better, or are we permanently divided? In this honest and hopeful book, pastor Isaac Adams doesn't just show you how to have the race conversation, he begins it for you. By offering a fictional, racially charged tragedy in order to understand varying perspectives and responses, he examines what is at stake if we ignore this conversation, and why there's just as much at stake in how we have that discussion, especially across color lines--that is, with people of another ethnicity. This unique approach offers insight into how to listen to one another well and seek unity in Christ. Looking to God's Word, Christians can find wisdom to speak gracefully and truthfully about racism for the glory of God, the good of their neighbors, and the building up of the church. Some feel that the time for talking is over, and that we've heard all this before. But given how polarized American society is becoming--its churches not exempt--fresh attention on the dysfunctional communication between ethnicities is more than warranted. Adams offers an invitation to faithfully combat the racism so many of us say we hate and maintain the unity so many of us say we want. Together we can learn to speak in such a way that we show a divided world a different world. Talking About Race points to the starting line, not the finish line, when it comes to following Jesus amid race relations. It’s high time to begin running.

Download or read book In His Name written by E. Christopher Reyes and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The way to maintain a Christianized falsehood is to stigmatize the real truth to such an extent that it would be heresy to even listen to it. For one who is seeking historical truth . . . A record held sacred is for the most part fundamentally vitiated [vitiated (Random House): 1. spoiled; marred. 2. perverted; corrupted. 3. rendered invalid] (Tacitus, 1, 2, 13; p. 2556). What does Christianity teach man? Christianity teaches that the human race is depraved, fallen, and sinful (D. James Kennedy, Why I Believe, World Publishing, 1980). This book is about the Christian leadership, which planned from the very beginning to deceive mankind, force feed mankind with their intellectual arrogance, convolutions, superstitions, and boldly admit to it; fabricating lies so preposterous and so deliberately outlandish that even the saints, who also obliged Christian subjects with their theological tunnel vision, had to write of them. The series of books entitled In His Name will virtually challenge everything you have been taught about Christianity. Just because something is old or of antiquity does not necessarily mean that it is the Truth! (1 Timothy). Christian apologists proclaim that Christianity is not only a Revelation of Divine Truth; it is also the Inspiration to a more virtuous life (excerpt from The History of the Orthodox Church by Rev. Constantine Callinikos). Time itself will someday expose the fallacies of their faith, a faith that not only deceives its followers but a faith that will also condemn them and condemn all constructive sacred learning. ________________________________________ Oh, what a tangled web we weave . . . When first we practice to deceive! (Sir Walter Scott). ________________________________________ Why do Christian churches refuse to let their congregations read of the beginnings of their faith? Why does the Christian Church refuse to allow their membership to read of the original authors? Why does the Church equate suffering with virtue? This book will challenge your beliefs. It is meant to get one to think rationally, sensibly, realistically. However, one must know that most churches do not want you to think rationally; they would rather you not think at all. At one time, the Catholic Church even issued guidelines as to which books a university could, with permission, disseminate to its students, and even the works of Aristotle [the Prince of Philosophers] and the Holy Bible itself were actually forbidden.

Download or read book Scripture Alone? written by Joel Peters and published by TAN Books. This book was released on 1999-12 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here are the classic reasons why the Protestant dogma of Sola Scriptura - "Scripture Alone" - is absolutely wrong, is unscriptural, man-made and prevents Protestants from ever having a firm doctrinal foundation. The book shows that: Christ gave us Tradition and the teaching authority of His Church; the first Christians did not have a complete Bible and Scripture itself states that it is insufficient of itself calling the Church and not the Bible "the pillar and ground of the truth."
