The story of the Royal Navy in the Second World War is an epic, consisting of both dramatic battles such as the River Plate and Matapan, and drawn-out campaigns such as the escort of convoys to Malta and northern Russia. Sailors Behind the Medals examines the careers of twenty-three sailors whose part in these actions resulted in the award of their medals. The author illustrates a cross-section of the wartime navy: long-service regulars, volunteers, recalled veterans of the Great War, Hostilities Only ratings. They served on nearly every kind of warship and in all the main theaters of the war, and their individual acts of gallantry under extreme conditions make for inspiring reading. Also included is an examination of the medals that were awarded for gallantry.

Book excerpt: Victor Kovalenko, who's teams have won more Olympic medals in sailing than those of any other sailing coach in history, grew up in the Soviet Union in the 1950s and 60s. The Medal Maker tracks his development from top sportsman in the Soviet Union to his initial Olympic success as a sailing coach of the Ukrainian team. But Victor's innate curiosity and broad philosophical outlook clashed with post-Soviet, Ukrainian politics. When Australia beckoned, he was ready. He turned what appeared to be a mission impossible into double gold at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000. At the time he was dubbed The Medal Maker. The name has stuck with good reason. To date, in eight Olympic Games, Victor's team have amassed ten Olympic medals, six of them gold.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I started the medal collection for “A Selection of Global War Crosses and Medals for Bravery, Merit and Service for World War 1” in August 2017 when I purchased my first war cross, the 3rd French Republic - Croix de Guerre. It took me a further five months to complete the collection as seen. I had just completed a twenty or so years family history project researching (although not all that time spent researching) my paternal Great Uncles., three of which had sadly been killed in action during WW1. I was in the process of having their medals and uniform items framed when I started to research their war medals and this collection just led on from there. The collection is not complete but provides a very good representation (many original, some very rare with a few *Reproductions, due to cost and/or scarcity) of many of the army military bravery and merit awards that covers every location / world country that participated in WW1. I also decided where appropriate to include a few campaign medals and a few naval medals. I researched the information for each award, as I was unable to find a book or an individual article that provided all the information in one document. The collection continues to grow and I intend to include a selection of WW1 Campaign and Army Regimental Medals in the 2nd Edition. It is my wish that it will provide a global perspective of the enormity of the reach of WW1, many of the awards mentioned being issued posthumously. IN MEMORY OF MY 3 GREAT UNCLES, William, James and George Smallshaw. Author - Lance Smallshaw Belgium (Origin: Liverpool, UK) January 2018

Book excerpt: From award-winning author Deborah Heiligman comes Torpedoed, a true account of the attack and sinking of the passenger ship SS City of Benares, which was evacuating children from England during WWII. Amid the constant rain of German bombs and the escalating violence of World War II, British parents by the thousands chose to send their children out of the country: the wealthy, independently; the poor, through a government relocation program called CORB. In September 1940, passenger liner SS City of Benares set sail for Canada with one hundred children on board. When the war ships escorting the Benares departed, a German submarine torpedoed what became known as the Children's Ship. Out of tragedy, ordinary people became heroes. This is their story. This title has Common Core connections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ed Tingstrom is passionate for history which has led to considerable study of U.S. history with emphases on military history. However he has detected inconsistencies in the recording of historical events which led mim to ask questions. He would research and ferret out the answers by utilizing the National Archives, Library of Congress and other institutions to provide the answers he sought. History has always been and will always be my passion. My quest is to share this passion with the younger generations in hopes of igniting a similar spark in them. History lives in all of us; all we have to do is seek the truth and remember. Mr. Tingstrom is a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). He enjoys giving lectures in history and military service at local high schools and colleges, as well as serving as a docent at the VFW museum, which houses a collection of vintage poster art and war memorabilia dating back to the turn of the twenth century. This is his first book This book is dedicated to my wife Deirdre Whose constant encouragement and love provided me with the strength and conviction to continue. To Professor Ransford Hopkins, Professor of History, Moorpark College, California, who lit the spark, which turned into a roaring fire to write this book, and to seek out history were ever it is found and share it with others.
