Book Synopsis Sailing the Zodiac by : Matías Salomón

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Zodiac is a fascinating tool that we humans have been using since the beginning of our history to understand our destiny and existence. Projected towards the sky, it is seen as a set of arbitrarily grouped stars: the illustrious 12 constellations that the Sun, the Moon, and the planets travel in their apparent movement around our planet. However, the astrological value of the Zodiac is different: its circularity reveals 12 archetypal qualities deeply relevant to our evolution. Projecting it to the stars is a subtle way of reminding us of this. Its name comes from the Greek Zōidiakós which means animal path and describes quite accurately the type of creatures that inhabit it. The Zodiac itself is the setting of this novel. Everything that happens in this novel takes place precisely within its surroundings. The main character of this story is Eol, Lion of lions. He finds it difficult to integrate himself into the Zodiac's structure until he meets the Centaur Itrasagio and together they begin to explore it. As he begins to meet its Denizens, the traveler recovers the feeling of belonging to a Greater Whole that contains him. In the format of a hero's-journey type story, "Sailing the Zodiac" tries to provide its readers, initiated or not in the astrological language, an overview of the archetypal meaning of the Zodiac and of each Sign in particular. Everyone is welcome aboard!

Book Synopsis Sailing School by : Margaret E. Schotte
Download or read book Sailing School written by Margaret E. Schotte and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2019-07-30 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hands-on science in the Age of Exploration. Winner of the John Lyman Book Award in Naval and Maritime Science and Technology by the North American Society for Oceanic History and the Leo Gershoy Prize by the American Historical Association Throughout the Age of Exploration, European maritime communities bent on colonial and commercial expansion embraced the complex mechanics of celestial navigation. They developed schools, textbooks, and instruments to teach the new mathematical techniques to sailors. As these experts debated the value of theory and practice, memory and mathematics, they created hybrid models that would have a lasting impact on applied science. In Sailing School, a richly illustrated comparative study of this transformative period, Margaret E. Schotte charts more than two hundred years of navigational history as she investigates how mariners solved the challenges of navigating beyond sight of land. She begins by outlining the influential sixteenth-century Iberian model for training and certifying nautical practitioners. She takes us into a Dutch bookshop stocked with maritime manuals and a French trigonometry lesson devoted to the idea that "navigation is nothing more than a right triangle." The story culminates at the close of the eighteenth century with a young British naval officer who managed to keep his damaged vessel afloat for two long months, thanks largely to lessons he learned as a keen student. This is the first study to trace the importance, for the navigator's art, of the world of print. Schotte interrogates a wide variety of archival records from six countries, including hundreds of published textbooks and never-before-studied manuscripts crafted by practitioners themselves. Ultimately, Sailing School helps us to rethink the relationship among maritime history, the Scientific Revolution, and the rise of print culture during a period of unparalleled innovation and global expansion.

Download or read book Sail Away written by Bob Cowin and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-12-11 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A class of Grade 10 students boards a replica of a century-old schooner for a five-day cruise through the Gulf Islands on Canada’s Pacific Coast. Sail Away chronicles their first day in this friendly but unfamiliar environment. It’s a day filled with adventure, toil, and zaniness. The book portrays a rustic version of maritime life: How do I wash my hair? (You don’t.) Do I really have to stand watch for an hour in the middle of the night? (Yes.) May I climb the rigging to the top of the mast? (Only if your safety harness is clipped in at all times.) Threads about living in a humane and meaningful manner are woven into this nautical story. Although the characters are invented, the events are not. Sail Away remains true to the real experiences of real people, told from the point of view of the crew. Nobody dies. No romance blossoms. No smugglers are chased. But something compelling and enriching emerges when ordinary people are crammed into an anachronistic setting.
