Book Synopsis Selection of Sahiwal Cattle Based on Growth and First Lactation Traits by : Manoj M.
Download or read book Selection of Sahiwal Cattle Based on Growth and First Lactation Traits written by Manoj M. and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sahiwal is one of the superior milch breeds of Indian subcontinent which has been used for cattle improvement programmes around the world. The Sahiwal cows are known for their remarkable power of endurance for hot climate of tropics, resistance to tropical diseases, low cost of maintenance, higher feed conversion efficiency and having higher percentage of milk constituents as compared to crossbreds. Thus it is necessary to establish, maintain and multiply herds of this elite Indian breed and to adopt system of selection to improve their genetic merit. The selection of calves on the basis of their growth parameters at an early age can be used as one of the selection criteria, besides selecting the animals based on first lactation performance.

Book Synopsis Breed Structure and Genetic Analysis of Pedigreed Sahiwal Cattle by : K. M. Reddy
Download or read book Breed Structure and Genetic Analysis of Pedigreed Sahiwal Cattle written by K. M. Reddy and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed investigation was planned to study the origin and development of selected Sahiwal herds and to determine the amount of inbreeding and its effect on various economic traits, to investigate and culling rates herd life, reasons for mortality and disposal of animals at different stages of life and their influence on improvement of the breds, and to evaluate the reproductive and productive status of different herds and to estimate the optimal levels of different reproductive traits affecting milk production. The inbred studies revealed that in general there was no delectarious effect of inbreeding on various economic traits considered. The exceptions were herd life, productive life and number of calvings in some herds. A great part of the total variation for majority of the characters studied in different herds was realised to be due to intangible causes and it seems unlikely that the range of variation could be reduced by inbreeding to a significant level. About disposal pattern in heifer calves the study revealed that more care is required in summer to save the lives of calves. The analysis of causes of mortality indicated the need for early and immediate diagnosis and treatment of the ailments which were found to cause losses so that the mortality could be restricted and higher intensities of selection by way of culling the cows for low production and other economic reasons could be achieved. The results of reproductive traits indicated that the effect of level of inbreeding varied greatly and in general there was deterioration in the traits among marginally inbred, moderate inbred and closely inbred groups while the trend was reverse in highly inbred cows. The reproductive traits recorded higher values during first lactation and in later lactations then did not differ much. The results obtained for different life time traits indicated that per day of production life and life time production were lower for herds having higher herd life and productive life and vice-versa. The results obtained concerning the effect of age at first calving on different first lactation traits revealed that the optima differed from herd to herd and from trait to trait, within a herd, indicating no significant role of age at first calving in determining these traits. It is concluded from the estimates that 30-39 months of age at first calving would be optimum for heifers to have higher performance in later life.
Book Synopsis The Kenya Sahiwal Cattle by : William Barasa Muhuyi
Download or read book The Kenya Sahiwal Cattle written by William Barasa Muhuyi and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an account of the research, development and future prospects of the Sahiwal cattle in Kenya. The development of a stable local breed started in the early 1940's when Sahiwal bulls were imported from Pakistan and India for continual backcrossing with the indigenous Zebu cattle. Presently, the developed Sahiwal breed has stabilized and is widely utilised in the medium to low production systems. This work reviews critical concepts that are important in genetic improvement and utilization of Sahiwal cattle such as genetic basis for selection, quantitative traits, reproductive management and the breed standards in Kenya, Pakistan and India. The book categorically reviews past performance and genetic parameters of Sahiwal cattle in Kenya with more emphasize on the National Sahiwal Stud (NSS) where selection and culling decisions were made. It proposes the need to move from the currently closed nucleus breeding scheme at the NSS which offers little options for diverse selection to an open nucleus breeding scheme (ONBS). Transiting to an ONBS would allow for more rapid genetic improvement within the NSS and thus maintain inbreeding and genetic variability at desirable levels.
