A questo modello si ispirarono i Sacri Monti costruiti dopo il Concilio di Trento a Orta, Crea, Varese, Oropa, Ossuccio, Ghiffa, Domodossola e Belmonte, che sperimentarono questa nuova ed efficace forma di comunicazione religiosa. Nei Sacri Monti operarono artisti importanti come Gaudenzio Ferrari, i pittori Fiammenghini, Morazzone, Tanzio da Varallo, Moncalvo, gli scultori Tabacchetti e Prestinari, Giovanni d'Enrico, Dionigi Bussola, Giuseppe Rusnati, Antonio Busca, che sovente si alternarono nei diversi complessi costruendo scene vive e reali, coinvolgenti e ricche di pathos, attuali oggi come allora per i fedeli e i cultori di arte.
