Book Synopsis Plant Diversity in India by : A.K. Bhatnagar
Download or read book Plant Diversity in India written by A.K. Bhatnagar and published by I K International Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2018-07-24 with total page 782 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India has a vast landmass of 328 million hectares, extending from the tropics to the alpine regions, rich wetlands to deserts, islands, long coastline to Western and Eastern Ghats and the high Himalayas. It has equally rich and diverse plant diversity, with over 47,000 species that are already documented. Because of the large population dependence on these plants, expansion of agriculture, urbanization and development efforts, many species are threatened too. Some of the issues concerning plant diversity in India are unique to the country. Taxonomic and floristic studies on all major groups have been carried out but the information is scattered in research papers and regional/local floras, manuals and monographs. This volume intends to bridge this gap. Nine of the thirteen chapters of this volume deals with different plant groups extending from algae to angiosperms and allied groups such as bacteria, fungi, lichens, and myxomycetes. There are chapters dealing with topical issues in global context on biodiversity with special reference to India such as climate change and its impact on biodiversity, crop diversity, and tradomedicalism. Each chapter is written by author(s) specialising on the particular group and having long experience of research in it. Each chapter includes not only distribution and diversity but also major researches, economic uses and conventional human interactions. Lacunae in current knowledge are also pinpointed. The book provides information on ecosystem diversity, flora of special sensitive regions (mangroves, wetland, and coral reefs), and on policies and strategies being adopted for in situ and ex situ conservation.

Book excerpt: While serious studies of the Bible’s rhetoric have been written for academic readers . . . few have attempted to examine the persuasiveness of speeches directly assigned to the biblical ‘God’ that so many believe in and worship . . . Further, no critic has yet tried to analyze how this God tries to invent and develop His arguments in the Bible as it has come down to us, or how this God arranges those arguments, or the styles He adopts to make them, and the roles memory and delivery play in His arguments . . . Eloquence Divine is one agnostic’s attempt at such a study. Th ose in the humanities, educators and their students, graduates and undergraduates, interested in rhetoric, persuasive language, religion, and the Bible are the ones most likely to be interested in this book’s explorations . . . in the hope that [these] readers, whatever their beliefs or theoretical preferences, can gain greater understanding of how one, a fairly popular version of God strives through His eloquence to affect the human audiences in the Bible. - From the Introduction

Book Synopsis The Sacred and the Profane by : Mircea Eliade
Download or read book The Sacred and the Profane written by Mircea Eliade and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 1959 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Famed historian of religion Mircea Eliade observes that even moderns who proclaim themselves residents of a completely profane world are still unconsciously nourished by the memory of the sacred. Eliade traces manifestations of the sacred from primitive to modern times in terms of space, time, nature, and the cosmos. In doing so he shows how the total human experience of the religious man compares with that of the nonreligious. This book serves as an excellent introduction to the history of religion, but its perspective also emcompasses philosophical anthropology, phenomenology, and psychology. It will appeal to anyone seeking to discover the potential dimensions of human existence. -- P. [4] of cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plants personify the divine— The Rig Veda (X.97) Trees and plants have long been held sacred to communities the world over. In India, we have a whole variety of flora that feature in our myths, our epics, our rituals, our worship and our daily life. There is the pipal, under which the Buddha meditated on the path to enlightenment; the banyan, in whose branches hide spirits; the ashoka, in a grove of which Sita sheltered when she was Ravana’s prisoner; the tulsi, without which no Hindu house is considered complete; the bilva, with whose leaves it is possible to inadvertently worship Shiva. Before temples were constructed, trees were open-air shrines sheltering the deity, and many were symbolic of the Buddha himself. Sacred Plants of India systematically lays out the sociocultural roots of the various plants found in the Indian subcontinent, while also asserting their ecological importance to our survival. Informative, thought-provoking and meticulously researched, this book draws on mythology and botany and the ancient religious traditions of India to assemble a detailed and fascinating account of India’s flora.
Book Synopsis Plants in Contemporary Poetry by : John Ryan
Download or read book Plants in Contemporary Poetry written by John Ryan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Positioned within current ecocritical scholarship, this volume is the first book-length study of the representations of plants in contemporary American, English, and Australian poetry. Through readings of botanically-minded writers including Les Murray, Louise Glück, and Alice Oswald, it addresses the relationship between language and the subjectivity, agency, sentience, consciousness, and intelligence of vegetal life. Scientific, philosophical, and literary frameworks enable the author to develop an interdisciplinary approach to examining the role of plants in poetry. Drawing from recent plant science and contributing to the exciting new field of critical plant studies, the author develops a methodology he calls "botanical criticism" that aims to redress the lack of emphasis on plant life in studies of poetry. As a subset of ecocriticism, botanical criticism investigates how poets engage with plants literally and figuratively, materially and symbolically, in their works. Key themes covered in this volume include plants as invasives and weeds in human settings; as sources of physical and spiritual nourishment; as signifiers of region, home, and identity; as objects of aesthetics and objectivism; and, crucially, as beings with their own perspectives, voices, and modes of dialogue. Ryan demonstrates that poetic imagination is as essential as scientific rationality to elucidating and appreciating the mysteries of plant-being. This book will appeal to a multidisciplinary readership in the fields of ecocriticism, ecopoetry, environmental humanities, and ecocultural studies, and will be of interest to researchers in the emerging area of critical plant studies.
Book Synopsis The New Islamic Century by : Munawar Sabir
Download or read book The New Islamic Century written by Munawar Sabir and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2021-09-04 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major issue with Islam today is illiteracy and lack of knowledge of the din. People lack understanding of the Qur’an and Allah’s message. Islam is still strong, growing stronger and vibrant. There are more Believers in the world than ever in history. Yet there are many things that have gone wrong within Islam. Muslims are blinded by blinkers of self-deception and delusion, and they cannot see the fitnah amongst their own selves. Believers in isolation and in unity need to look within themselves, in their community, and in the Ummah and take a stock, objectively, of their place with Allah and in this world. In this unity of purpose and the unity of action, Believers require self-cleansing, to enable them to observe themselves clearly, free of delusion and self-deception. Such unity of purpose and action requires a clean Nafs with taqwa of Allah and knowledge of Allah. They need to understand each word of Allah’s message and each Covenant they have made with Allah and to obey it diligently. They need to read and learn the Qur’an in their own language. Devotional reciting of the Quran should be in Arabic but for a clear understanding of Allah’s word should read be in their own language. Similarly, in personal salaat and dua they may beseech Allah in vernacular and say communal prayers in Arabic. Over a short time, each person will have mastery of Allah’s Word and understand their din, rights, and obligations. Qur’an is the din, Covenant, sharia, and the law. Twenty first century is the century of l earning, understanding and communication. Such knowledge requires understanding of Allah’s Word, the Revelations. Such understanding requires Allah’s Nur within the Believers’ heart. When the Blessed Nabi died, the era of Prophesy ended with him. There were to be no more prophets or en masse Revelations by Allah. When the blessed Nabi died, he bequeathed each Believer the Qur’an and the knowledge of Allah. With submission to Allah’s will, each Believer has Allah in the niche of his heart. Allah speaks to the Believer through each aya and through each word of the Qur’an. The Nabi was a beacon of Allah’s Nur on each Believer’s Path to Allah. The Believer speaks to Allah through the Qur’an, salaat, and dua, and Allah responds in believer’s heart and mind. This gives the Believer peace and tranquility. Submission Islam, gives Iman, and Iman promotes beautiful deeds, ihsan. Beautiful deeds bring the Believer closer to Allah. In closeness to Allah the Believer is aware of Allah’s presence and he continues to perform wholesome deeds in the Taqwa of Allah. Taqwa of Allah shines the Nur of Allah on the Believer’s Nafs, which blows away the smoke of desire and craving from the Nafs. And the Nafs shines in the likeness of a mirror with Allah’s Nur. Fitnah is rooted in cravings and greed of the human. Desire and craving for the shiny goods of this world muddies the Nafs and the human cannot see Allah’s presence within him. The human slips and he strays from the Path of Allah. Human is then lost. And the Qur’an speaks of such persons thus: These are they who have bartered guidance for error: but their traffic is profitless, and they have lost true direction. Their similitude is that of a man who kindled a f ire; when it lighted all around him, Allah took away their light and left them in utter darkness. So, they could not see. Deaf, dumb, and blind, they will not return to the path. Qur’an 2:15-18 When the people around the world see the wretched condition of Muslims today, they pose the question, ‘What is wrong with Islam? ’ And the Muslims themselves wonder why after all the sub mission, prayer and humility the Muslims continue to be mired in the dust heap of humanity? Muslims continue to be poor, ignorant, and disunited. They cannot extricate themselves from the fitnah and oppression in Palestine, Syria, Kashmir, India, Chechnya, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Those with the taqwa of Allah, the muttaqeen are conscious that Fitnah is rooted in the cravings of the human. Cleansing of the muttaqeen begins with the knowledge that fitnah is set in the covetousness and cravings of the Muslims; that fitnah is rooted in the body politics of Islam; fitnah is embedded in the social fabric of Islam; fitnah is implanted in the way Muslims treat their mothers, sisters, wives and daughters, fitnah has roots in the way Muslims treat other Muslims. Fitnah is in the way Muslim nations undermine and subvert each other. Fitnah is in the ongoing sectarian Shia Sunni rift.

Book Synopsis Plant Lore, Legends, and Lyrics Embracing the Myths, Traditions, Superstitions, and Folk-Lore of the Plant Kingdom by : Richard Folkard
Download or read book Plant Lore, Legends, and Lyrics Embracing the Myths, Traditions, Superstitions, and Folk-Lore of the Plant Kingdom written by Richard Folkard and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 761 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE analogy existing between the vegetable and animal worlds, and the resemblances between human and tree life, have been observed by man from the most remote periods of which we have any records. Primitive man, watching the marvellous changes in trees and plants, which accurately marked not only the seasons of the year, but even the periods of time in a day, could not fail to be struck with a feeling of awe at the mysterious invisible power which silently guided such wondrous and incomprehensible operations. Hence it is not astonishing that the early inhabitants of the earth should have invested with supernatural attributes the tree, which in the gloom and chill of Winter stood gaunt, bare, and sterile, but in the early Spring hastened to greet the welcome warmth-giving Sun by investing itself with a brilliant canopy of verdure, and in the scorching heat of Summer afforded a refreshing shade beneath its leafy boughs. So we find these men of old, who had learnt to reverence the mysteries of vegetation, forming conceptions of vast cosmogonic world- or cloud-trees overshadowing the universe; mystically typifying creation and regeneration, and yielding the divine ambrosia or food of immortality, the refreshing and life-inspiring rain, and the mystic fruit which imparted knowledge and wisdom to those who partook of it. So, again, we find these nebulous overspreading world-trees connected with the mysteries of death, and giving shelter to the souls of the departed in the solemn shade of their dense foliage. Looking upon vegetation as symbolical of life and generation, man, in course of time, connected the origin of his species with these shadowy cloud-trees, and hence arose the belief that humankind first sprang from Ash and Oak-trees, or derived their being from Holda, the cloud-goddess who combined in her person the form of a lovely woman and the trunk of a mighty tree. In after years trees were almost universally regarded either as sentient beings or as constituting the abiding places of spirits whose existence was bound up in the lives of the trees they inhabited. Hence arose the conceptions of Hamadryads, Dryads, Sylvans, Tree-nymphs, Elves, Fairies, and other beneficent spirits who peopled forests and dwelt in individual trees—not only in the Old World, but in the dense woods of North America, where the Mik-amwes, like Puck, has from time immemorial frolicked by moonlight in the forest openings. Hence, also, sprang up the morbid notion of trees being haunted by demons, mischievous imps, ghosts, nats, and evil spirits, whom it was deemed by the ignorant and superstitious necessary to propitiate by sacrifices, offerings, and mysterious rites and dances. Remnants of this superstitious tree-worship are still extant in some European countries. The Irminsul of the Germans and the Central Oak of the Druids were of the same family as the Asherah of the Semitic nations. In England, this primeval superstition has its descendants in the village maypole bedizened with ribbons and flowers, and the Jack-in-the-Green with its attendant devotees and whirling dancers. The modern Christmas-tree, too, although but slightly known in Germany at the beginning of the present century, is evidently a remnant of the pagan tree-worship; and it is somewhat remarkable that a similar tree is common among the Burmese, who call it the Padaytha-bin. This Turanian Christmas-tree is made by the inhabitants of towns, who deck its Bamboo twigs with all sorts of presents, and pile its roots with blankets, cloth, earthenware, and other useful articles.
