Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This atlas, containing a wealth of clear operative images, is designed to enable trainee surgeons to visualise the surgical field for procedures specific to open colorectal surgery, thereby facilitating understanding and learning of surgical techniques and avoidance of intra- and postoperative complications. Step-by-step guidance is provided for a wide range of procedures to the colon, rectum, pelvic floor, anus and anal canal, in each case paying meticulous attention to surgical anatomy. The full range of potential indications for open surgery is considered, including benign and malignant tumours, inflammatory bowel disease, appendicitis, diverticulitis, hemorrhoids, anal fistulas and rectal prolapse among others. Whenever considered necessary, additional line drawings are included to aid comprehension of particular steps in the surgery. Readers seeking to improve their understanding of surgical anatomy and how to perform these operative procedures will find the atlas to be an unparalleled source of information and assistance. A complementary book from the same authors focuses on laparoscopic colorectal surgery.

It then discusses in depth the epidemiology, etiology, assessment, and management of the full range of pelvic floor disorders from multidisciplinary and practical perspectives. The book also provides information on the various forms of obstetric perineal trauma, urinary incontinence and voiding dysfunction, anal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, constipation and obstructed defecation, pelvic pain and sexual dysfunction, and fistulas, and includes treatment algorithms as well as helpful guidance on what to do when surgical treatment goes wrong. The authors are leading experts in the field from around the globe. Since the first edition from 2010 (more than 200,000 chapter downloads), the book has been extensively rewritten and features numerous additional topics. The result is a comprehensive textbook that is invaluable for gynecologists, colorectal surgeons, urologists, radiologists, and gastroenterologists, beginners and veterans alike.

Book excerpt: The prevalence of fecal incontinence is approximately 5% in the general population. In all patients, the treatment of fecal incontinence is primarily conservative and surgery is offered as second line treatment. Electrical stimulation of the sacral nerves (SNS) with an implanted electrode is a minimally invasive and effective treatment of idiopathic FI and the indications for SNS are widening. However, SNS requires surgery while percutaneous electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves could be a non-invasive alternative. Stimulation for Faecal Incontinence comprises five studies. Study I examines the clinical effectiveness of transcutaneous stimulation. Study II and III examined the acute effect of rectal stimulation in idiopathic incontinent patients and patients with spinal cord injury. In study IV the validity of a new research tool for assessment of gastrointestinal motility during stimulation is evaluated. In study V, small intestinal motility is investigated in patients implanted with a sacral nerve stimulator for faecal incontinence. Based on the present book it can be concluded that: DGN stimulation reduces faecal incontinence in patients with idiopathic faecal incontinence but the mode of action remains unknown. DGN does not affect rectal wall properties in patients with idiopathic faecal incontinence. DGN increases rectal tone in patients with supraconal spinal cord injury, but the validity and clinical importance of the finding need further study. MTS-1 is useful for determination of gastric emptying and small intestinal transit time. Preliminary results indicate that SNS does not affect small intestinal motility, but data need further analysis and have to be confirmed in a larger study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neuromodulation implants are currently one of the most successful techniques in the treatment of chronic pain, a condition that affects more and more patients each year, leading to reduced quality of life as well as economic losses. Neuromodulation implants for pain are a relatively new technique and are being increasingly used around the globe. However, technical training is not available for every implanter as there are relatively few centers in the world. Further, refresher courses for low-rate implanters are not available. This book fills that gap by offering an update on the best techniques currently used, providing a step-by-step guide on how to perform these procedures correctly. Based on the experiences of leading physicians in the field, it also discusses how to manage both major and minor complications. Lastly, it covers the neuromodulatory intervention techniques used to treat chronic pain in various clinical areas. As such it is a valuable resource for pain physicians as well as neurosurgeons, orthopedists and anesthetists.

Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary resource for the latest information on implantable medical devices, and is intended for graduate students studying electrical engineering, electronic instrumentation, and biomedical engineering. It is also appropriate for academic researchers, professional engineers, practicing doctors, and paramedical staff. Divided into two sections on Basic Concepts and Principles, and Applications, the first section provides an all-embracing perspective of the electronics background necessary for this work. The second section deals with pacing techniques used for the heart, brain, spinal cord, and the network of nerves that interlink the brain and spinal cord with the major organs, including ear and eye prostheses. The four main offshoots of implantable electronics, which this book discusses, are: The insertion of an implantable neural amplifier for accurate recording of neural signals for neuroengineering studies The use of implantable pulse generators for pacing the activities of diseased organs The use of implantable sensors for observing the influence of therapy and monitoring a patient’s biological parameters The use of drug delivery systems to supervise the supply of accurate doses of medicine to affected parts Readers will also find chapters on the essentials of clocking and timing circuits, pulse generator circuits, neural amplifiers, batteries, biomaterials and biocompatibility, and more. Unique to this book is also a chapter on cyber security and confidentiality concerns with implants. End-of-chapter questions and exercises help readers apply the content to practical use, making this an ideal book for anyone wishing to learn more about implantable devices.
