Book excerpt: In the early days of exploration of prehistoric relics little care was bestowed on discriminating the several layers of deposit through which the spade cut, and what was found was thrown up into a common heap, and little account was taken as to the depths at which the several deposits lay. I had the chance in 1892 of visiting La Laugerie Basse on the Vezere in company with Dr Massenat and M. Philibert Lalande, who conducted the exploration after MM. Christy and Lartet had abandoned the field. They had to carry on the work with very limited means, but they arrived, nevertheless, at conclusions which had escaped the earlier explorers.Ê

Book excerpt: So begins Sabine Baring-Gould's account of his journey on horseback around Iceland in 1862. Aged twenty-eight, the young writer and teacher was fascinated by the tradition of the Icelandic sagas, and this was the catalyst for his adventure and the book that emerged from it. His voyage took him from the then tiny settlement of Reykjavik through remote and hostile terrain, passing through the empty expanse of Iceland's countryside. He observed mountains and glaciers, volcanoes and geysers, wondering at the wild beauty of the landscape. He also recorded the rich flora and fauna that he saw-and, to his chagrin, that his companions shot.

Download or read book Mehalah written by S. Baring-Gould and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This English fiction presents the story of Mehala, a strong-willed woman, and starts with a strange description of the Ray where Mehalah and her frail mother live. With rent day coming close, their fierce landowner, Elijah Rebow, gives them a visit to remind them that now they owe their livelihood to him. He attempts to force Mehalah into submission, yet she openly fights him and insists on self-sufficiency and liberty. Mehalah is a major Victorian novel published in 1880 and is set in the isolated marshes of Mersea and the surrounding area. The prominent theme of the book is independence and imprisonment. The novel is filled with incredible imagery and strong characterization. The writing is skillful, gripping, vibrant, and weirdly funny in places. In addition to the dark main plot, there are foolish supporting characters to deliver comic relief. The story also acts as an interesting account of life at the time in this part of the country during that period. It sheds light on the poverty, struggles, and desolation of the people and landscape.

Sabine Baring-Gould, Victorian squire and parson of Lewtrenchard, wrote two volumes of Reminiscences these are mostly about his ancestors, the places he visited and the people he met. Very little is about himself and his family. Furthermore, a dearth of diaries and letters has made the task of his biographers difficult. Ron Wawman's transcription and in-depth researches of a recently discovered diary and other material, including several crucial collections of letters, have enabled him to put forward some exciting, new perceptions of the life and character of this important Devonian.

Book excerpt: Purchase one of 1st World Library's Classic Books and help support our free internet library of downloadable eBooks. Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - The great farm hall was ablaze with the fire-light, and noisy with laughter and talk and many-sounding work. None could be idle but the very young and the very old: little Rol, who was hugging a puppy, and old Trella, whose palsied hand fumbled over her knitting. The early evening had closed in, and the farm-servants, come from their outdoor work, had assembled in the ample hall, which gave space for a score or more of workers. Several of the men were engaged in carving, and to these were yielded the best place and light; others made or repaired fishing-tackle and harness, and a great seine net occupied three pairs of hands. Of the women most were sorting and mixing eider feather and chopping straw to add to it. Looms were there, though not in present use, but three wheels whirred emulously, and the finest and swiftest thread of the three ran between the fingers of the house-mistress. Near her were some children, busy too, plaiting wicks for candles and lamps. Each group of workers had a lamp in its centre, and those farthest from the fire had live heat from two braziers filled with glowing wood embers, replenished now and again from the generous hearth. But the flicker of the great fire was manifest to remotest corners, and prevailed beyond the limits of the weaker lights.
