Book excerpt: Published in 2018 to mark Saathi House’s 40th anniversary, we embarked on collecting stories and photographs of twenty individuals who have used Saathi House over the past 40 years. These memories were collected stories from some of the first service users of Saathi House way back in 1978 to those using its services in 2018. A beautifully produced full-colour book to accompany a short film and stunning exhibition exploring heritage; Saathi House Stories highlights the crucial role grassroots organisations play in shaping the journey of those who use vital local services. Apsana Khatun, at the tender age of two, accompanied her Mum to Saathi House to attend language classes during the mid 1980s. As a teenager, Apsana engaged with a Saathi House girls’ group and progressed on to becoming one of Saathi House’s youngest female youth workers. Apsana now has a well-established career in youth and community development work; and has now come full circle with her involvement with Saathi House as her young son attends the centre’s Saturday Club. That’s three generations of the same family using the socially engaging services at Saathi House! The collection of stories captured in this tome are a way of inspiring others to become more involved with local community organisations like Saathi House, where committed volunteers have long campaigned to generate local support, which has ensured city-wide respect for a project that is now one of the city’s oldest organisations set up to serve immigrant communities. Saathi House, located a stone’s throw from the Aston Villa Football Club, prides itself on the the diversity of its participants and supporters, as local people have embraced the establishment as a neutral, safe space over the decades. Now enjoying its 40th anniversary, it continues this legacy by keeping itself relevant and moving in sync with the changing needs, times and trends of the people of Aston and wider Birmingham. The Saathi House Stories project - conceived and presented by Mashkura Begum - has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). © Saathi House / Mashkura Begum, 2018.

Book excerpt: “Spine chilling … written with flair and clear-eyed acidity.” — The New Yorker Based on actual events, The Story of My Assassins tells the story of a journalist who learns that the police have captured five hitmen on their way to kill him. Landing like a bombshell on his comfortable life, just as he’s started a steamy affair with a brilliant woman, the news prompts him to launch an urgent investigation into the lives of his aspiring murderers—a ragtag group of street thugs and village waifs—and their mastermind. Who wanted him dead, and why? But the investigation forces him to reexamine his own life, too—to confront his own notion of himself, his job, and his treatment of the women in his life, as well as his own complex feelings about the country that crafted his would-be killers. Part thriller and part erotic romance, full of dark humor and knife-edged suspense, The Story of My Assassins is a piercing literary novel that takes us from the lavish, hedonistic palaces of India’s elite to its seediest slums. It is a novel of corruption, passion, power, and ambition; of extreme poverty and obscene wealth. It is an awesome adventure into the heart of today’s India.

As she struggles to emerge from this devastation over the next long stretch of her life, her past is relentless in its haunting. It takes many years before doctors diagnose her with PTSD, and many more for her to find the right combination of Western medicine and Eastern wisdom to heal her. Her medication with cannabis, experimentation with Ayahuasca in Peru and finally a breakthrough healing with psilocybin offers a diverse look at mental healing. In the background of it all is her dedicated cultivation of yogic and psychic abilities. At last, Life Happens to Us endorses the importance of embracing unresolved childhood experiences. Book excerpt: Women in Asian Performance offers a vital re-assessment of women's contributions to Asian performance traditions, focusing for the first time on their specific historical, cultural and performative contexts. Arya Madhavan brings together leading scholars from across the globe to make an exciting intervention into current debates around femininity and female representation on stage. This collection looks afresh at the often centuries-old aesthetic theories and acting conventions that have informed ideas of gender in Asian performance. It is divided into three parts: erasure – the history of the presence and absence of female bodies on Asian stages; intervention – the politics of female intervention into patriarchal performance genres; reconstruction – the strategies and methods adopted by women in redefining their performance practice. Establishing a radical, culturally specific approach to addressing female performance-making, Women in Asian Performance is a must-read for scholars and students across Asian Studies and Performance Studies.
