This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Satyendra Nath Bose became a legendary figure of science in the 20th century in India with his revolutionary discovery on the nature of radiation. Despite the association with Einstein, however, little is known about him outside of India. This book highlights the remarkable intellect and the extraordinary personality of Bose set against the backdrop of a rich Bengali cultural tradition and British-Indian politics. Unlike other books covering the significance of Bose's discovery, this book describes his diverse scientific contributions to India's scientific community by bringing together selected articles and addresses by Bose as well as contributions from some well-known scientists on the many-faceted life of Bose, thus making it a truly unique volume.
Book Synopsis Science and National Consciousness in Bengal by : J. Lourdusamy
Download or read book Science and National Consciousness in Bengal written by J. Lourdusamy and published by Orient Blackswan. This book was released on 2004 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a flavour of the Indian response to modern science by analysing the lives and careers of four scientifically influential personalities in Bengal. His analysis of the careers of two scientists, J. C. Bose and P. C. Ray, and two institution builders, Mahendralal Sircar and Asutosh Mookerjee, brings to light the issues related to science at a time of colonialism and nationalism. Scientists often had to depend on British institutions for legitimation and funding, while also supporting the nationalist cause for greater autonomy. One of the central claims of this book is that the protagonists aimed to contribute to a modern world science, one based on a strong sense of universalism. They did not aim to construct any alternative sciences, though they did express and apply their work by drawing on their cultural heritage. This makes Science and National Consciousness a work of particular relevance today, when a homogenous, instrumentalist and totally Western conception of science is being globally accepted.
Book Synopsis The Privatisation of Higher Education in Postcolonial Bangladesh by : Ariful H. Kabir
Download or read book The Privatisation of Higher Education in Postcolonial Bangladesh written by Ariful H. Kabir and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-16 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book problematises contemporary realities of the political dimension of the privatisation of higher education in Bangladesh. By exploring the complexities of neoliberalism as an economic and ideological doctrine, a mode of governance, and as a policy package, it considers the ‘post’ attached to and hyphenated with ‘colonialism’ as more aspirational than achieved. Based on an interdisciplinary study involving contemporary theories from political and social sciences, economics, and the socio-economics of education, the book explores the unique ways in which Bangladeshi higher education has evolved over the past four decades, and the complex politics behind its privatisation. Through an empirically based account of how neoliberalism has worked its way through the higher education sector in the fastest growing economy in the South Asian context, it discusses how changes have been characterised by policy reforms, massification, and a sustained friction between control and autonomy in the university sector. The authors take a nuanced approach to their geo-political and onto-epistemological positionalities as diasporic and hybridised scholars by rejecting epistemological exclusion inherent in the colonial present and research conducted in such contexts. This position allows the reinforcement of a colonial present, theorising from within Global South decolonial and postcolonial research literature. This book contributes to discourses of ‘globalisation from above’ and ‘globalisation from below’ and sheds light on the often-idiosyncratic ways in which higher education reform has unfolded in South Asia. It will be of interest to comparative educators and those researching higher education policy and education developments in Global South nations.

Book Synopsis Social History of Science in Colonial India by : S. Irfan Habib
Download or read book Social History of Science in Colonial India written by S. Irfan Habib and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2007 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can science be seen as the flag bearer of the 'civilizing mission' dispelling the darkness of centuries of superstition? Did the installation of new technological systems displace ancient primitive techniques? Rejecting the simplistic notion of transmission of science and technology, this reader argues for a variety of perspectives. Part of the prestigious Themes in Indian History series, it provides an excellent introduction to the world of science and technology in colonial India. Departing from the standard practice of seeing science as a cultural universal, Social History of Science emphasizes the need for redrawing boundaries long taken for granted. It investigates how modern science - considered as a pristine Western cultural import - was reconstituted in the encounter with other ways of knowing and acting on the world. Bringing together some of the finest writings - even rare - on the subject, this volume highlights the multiplicity of historiogaphic positions on colonial science and the changing landscapes for the study of science in South Asia. The contributors approach issues related to science and colonialism from a variety of scientific disciplines. They engage with the drift produced by the entanglement of science and values and the complicity of the scientific project in that of imperialism.

Book Synopsis The Oxford Companion to Economics in India by : Kaushik Basu
Download or read book The Oxford Companion to Economics in India written by Kaushik Basu and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2008 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we get into the twenty-first century, the concept of the Indian economy has come to encompass a mind-boggling array of topics, phenomena, and complexities. And, with that, the so-called expert on the Indian economy is becoming a vanishing tribe. Someone may have expertise on Indianagriculture but not know anything on the countrys financial markets; another may possess knowledge of the nations many standard-of-living indicators but be innocent of the world of fiscal policy. The aim of this ambitious book is to make amends for this. It provides a comprehensive and far-reachingcompendium of essays on a vast range of themes pertaining to the Indian economy. It should serve as an essential reference not just for students of India and economists working on the Indian economy, but for bureaucrats and policymakers, and corporate investors and entrepreneurs interested incontemporary India. Among the over 190 authors are some of the most eminent economists of the world, corporate leaders and CEOs and important politicians. As a consequence this book is not just a reference volume but a record of the thinking of our times. The new edition has several revised entries on sectors of the Indian economy that have been undergoing rapid transformation during the very short time the first edition was under way. For example, IT and ITes, where the domestic market is luring more IT players and MNCs; Savings and Investments;aviation, a sector which is on a high growth trajectory, etc. Also, in keeping with the new and emerging sectors that are evolving in a dynamic economy and showing sharp development, there are new entries on SEZs; land rights; self-help groups, demographic dividend etc to keep readers updated. A newintroduction and a new cover blurb highlight these issues along with reviews from economists as well as comments from mainstream media.

Book Synopsis Critical Properties of [Greek Letter Phi]4-theories by : Hagen Kleinert
Download or read book Critical Properties of [Greek Letter Phi]4-theories written by Hagen Kleinert and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains in detail how to perform perturbation expansions in quantum field theory to high orders, and how to extract the critical properties of the theory from the resulting divergent power series. These properties are calculated for various second-order phase transitions of three-dimensional systems with high accuracy, in particular the critical exponents observable in experiments close to the phase transition.Beginning with an introduction to critical phenomena, this book develops the functional-integral description of quantum field theories, their perturbation expansions, and a method for finding recursively all Feynman diagrams to any order in the coupling strength. Algebraic computer programs are supplied on accompanying World Wide Web pages. The diagrams correspond to integrals in momentum space. They are evaluated in 4-î dimensions, where they possess pole terms in 1/î. The pole terms are collected into renormalization constants. The theory of the renormalization group is used to find the critical scaling laws. They contain critical exponents which are obtained from the renormalization constants in the form of power series. These are divergent, due to factorially growing expansion coefficients. The evaluation requires resummation procedures, which are performed in two ways: (1) using traditional methods based on Pad and Borel transformations, combined with analytic mappings; (2) using modern variational perturbation theory, where the results follow from a simple strong-coupling formula. As a crucial test of the accuracy of the methods, the critical exponent à governing the divergence of the specific heat of superfluid helium is shown to agree very well with the extremely precise experimental number found in the space shuttle orbiting the earth (whose data are displayed on the cover of the book). The phi4-theories investigated in this book contain any number N of fields in an O(N)-symmetric interaction, or in an interaction in which O(N)-symmetry is broken by a term of a cubic symmetry. The crossover behavior between the different symmetries is investigated. In addition, alternative ways of obtaining critical exponents of phi4-theories are sketched, such as variational perturbation expansions in three rather than 4-î dimensions, and improved ratio tests in high-temperature expansions of lattice models.
