Book Synopsis Russian Energy Security and Foreign Policy by : Adrian Dellecker
Download or read book Russian Energy Security and Foreign Policy written by Adrian Dellecker and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2011-05-03 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an original and thoroughly academic analysis of the link between Russian energy and foreign policies in Eurasia, as well as offering an interpretation of Russia’s coherence on the international stage, seeking to understand Russia and explain its behaviour. The authors analyse both energy and foreign policies together, in order to better grasp their correlation and gain deeper understanding of broader geopolitical issues in Eurasia at a time when things could go either way—towards producers or towards consumers. Questioning the concept of ‘energy deterrence’ which aims to fuel uncertainty in Russia’s relations with its partners, as well as projecting its overall power on the international scene, this provocative volume seeks to stimulate debate on this very important issue. Assessing the weight that energy has in Russia’s foreign policy and in its pursuit of power on the international stage, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of international relations, energy politics, geopolitics and Russian and Central Asian Studies.

Book Synopsis Russia Resurrected by : Kathryn E. Stoner
Download or read book Russia Resurrected written by Kathryn E. Stoner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An assessment of Russia that suggests that we should look beyond traditional means of power to understand its strength and capacity to disrupt international politics. Too often, we are told that Russia plays a weak hand well. But, perhaps the nation's cards are better than we know. Russia ranks significantly behind the US and China by traditional measures of power: GDP, population size and health, and military might. Yet 25 years removed from its mid-1990s nadir following the collapse of the USSR, Russia has become a supremely disruptive force in world politics. Kathryn E. Stoner assesses the resurrection of Russia and argues that we should look beyond traditional means of power to assess its strength in global affairs. Taking into account how Russian domestic politics under Vladimir Putin influence its foreign policy, Stoner explains how Russia has battled its way back to international prominence. From Russia's seizure of the Crimea from Ukraine to its military support for the Assad regime in Syria, the country has reasserted itself as a major global power. Stoner examines these developments and more in tackling the big questions about Russia's turnaround and global future. Stoner marshals data on Russia's political, economic, and social development and uncovers key insights from its domestic politics. Russian people are wealthier than the Chinese, debt is low, and fiscal policy is good despite sanctions and the volatile global economy. Vladimir Putin's autocratic regime faces virtually no organized domestic opposition. Yet, mindful of maintaining control at home, Russia under Putin also uses its varied power capacities to extend its influence abroad. While we often underestimate Russia's global influence, the consequences are evident in the disruption of politics in the US, Syria, and Venezuela, to name a few. Russia Resurrected is an eye-opening reassessment of the country, identifying the actual sources of its power in international politics and why it has been able to redefine the post-Cold War global order.

At the same time, the plurality of the chapters shows the complexity of the relationship that will have to be taken into account in order to overcome the current crisis and construct sustainable and mutually beneficial relations.
Book Synopsis Synergies Vs. Spheres of Influence in the Pan-European Space by : Michael Emerson
Download or read book Synergies Vs. Spheres of Influence in the Pan-European Space written by Michael Emerson and published by CEPS. This book was released on 2009 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report investigates how the European Union can build stronger common programs and projects with Russia, its Eastern partner countries, and Central Asia. The objective is to establish synergies between actions that are presently segmented among these three regions. A particular goal is to induce Russia to become a genuinely cooperative positive-sum game player in the wider European neighborhood, and to abandon its attempts to rebuild the former Soviet Union as its sphere of influence. The authors believe that the current global financial and economic crisis could become the tipping point to set in motion a change of strategic attitudes--resulting in a cascade of cooperative actions of the kinds outlined in the report.

Book Synopsis Micro-institutional Foundations of Capitalism by : Roselyn Hsueh
Download or read book Micro-institutional Foundations of Capitalism written by Roselyn Hsueh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the relationship between internal development and integration into the global economy in developing countries? How and why do state–market relations differ? And do these differences matter in the post-cold war era of global conflict and cooperation? Drawing on research in China, India, and Russia and examining sectors from textiles to telecommunications, Micro-institutional Foundations of Capitalism introduces a new theory of sectoral pathways to globalization and development. Adopting a historical approach, the book's Strategic Value Framework shows how state elites perceive the strategic value of sectors in response to internal and external pressures. Sectoral structures and organization of institutions further determine the role of the state in market coordination and property rights arrangements. The resultant dominant patterns of market governance vary by country and sector within country. These national configurations of sectoral models are the micro-institutional foundations of capitalism, which mediate globalization and development.
Book Synopsis Crisis Management for Software Development and Knowledge Transfer by : Sergey V. Zykov
Download or read book Crisis Management for Software Development and Knowledge Transfer written by Sergey V. Zykov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-30 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This well structured book discusses lifecycle optimization of software projects for crisis management by means of software engineering methods and tools. Its outcomes are based on lessons learned from the software engineering crisis which started in the 1960s. The book presents a systematic approach to overcome the crisis in software engineering depends which not only depends on technology-related but also on human-related factors. It proposes an adaptive methodology for software product development, which optimizes the software product lifecycle in order to avoid “local” crises of software production. The general lifecycle pattern and its stages are discussed, and their impact on the time and budget of the software product development is analyzed. The book identifies key advantages and disadvantages for various models selected and concludes that there is no “silver bullet”, or universal model, which suits all software products equally well. It approaches software architecture in terms of process, data and system perspectives and proposes an incremental methodology for crisis-agile development of large-scale, distributed heterogeneous applications. The book introduces a number of specialized approaches which are widely used in industry but are often ignored in general writings because of their vendor-specificity. In doing so, the book builds a helpful bridge from academic conceptions of software engineering to the world of software engineering practice. With its systematic coverage of different software engineering methodologies and the presented rich systems engineering examples the book will be beneficial for a broader audience.
Book Synopsis Teaching and Learning in a Digital World by : Michael E. Auer
Download or read book Teaching and Learning in a Digital World written by Michael E. Auer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 981 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers the Proceedings of the 20th International Conference on Interactive Collaborative Learning (ICL2017), held in Budapest, Hungary on 27–29 September 2017. The authors are currently witnessing a significant transformation in the development of education. The impact of globalisation on all areas of human life, the exponential acceleration of technological developments and global markets, and the need for flexibility and agility are essential and challenging elements of this process that have to be tackled in general, but especially in engineering education. To face these current real-world challenges, higher education has to find innovative ways to quickly respond to them. Since its inception in 1998, this conference has been devoted to new approaches in learning with a focus on collaborative learning. Today the ICL conferences offer a forum for exchange concerning relevant trends and research results, and for sharing practical experience gained while developing and testing elements of new technologies and pedagogies in the learning context.

Book Synopsis Powers and Principles by : Michael Schiffer
Download or read book Powers and Principles written by Michael Schiffer and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if the major global and regional powers of today's world came into closer alignment to build a stronger international community and shared approaches to twenty-first century threats and challenges? The Stanley Foundation posed that question to thirty-three top foreign policy analysts in Powers and Principles: International Leadership in a Shrinking World. Contributing writers were asked to describe the paths that nine powerful nations, a regional union of twenty-seven states, and a multinational corporation could take as constructive stakeholders in a strengthened rules-based international order. Each chapter is an assessment of what is politically possible (and impossible)--with a description of the associated pressures and reference to the country's geostrategic position, economy, society, history, and political system and culture. To provide a perspective from the inside and counterweight, each essay is accompanied by a critical reaction by a prominent analyst commentator from the given country. Powers and Principles is aimed at both reflective practitioners of policy and policy-relevant scholars.
