Book excerpt: I couldn't eat I thought it would fall out. He got us tequila and beer. This was what I needed? I was happy to lay down, have food and drink! We drank alcohol throughout the night. I was so smashed I wasn't feeling the agony so we went dancing at Mario's. That night I was in massive pain, but continued drinking and doing cocaine. I didn't have anything to live for without my children. It took a year to hold my head up without help. With no occupation, cash, vehicle or home I hitched to Kentucky to find my children. I found Katy's brother who told me where they were. Karen came to the door. I was standing knee deep in snow solidifying. Karen said; "Typically I wouldn't let trash in, but the situation being what it is I may let you look at them. They're sleeping in the cellar don't wake them." I said; "My children are on the missing kids rundown and I'm their mother." The law told me to get them back I had to battle for them in the state they're in. Katy worked for Bell South as an administrator. Bell South enabled her to move each time she's searching for me. Katy got home that evening to find me there. I said; "You stole my kids while I'm on my death bed." She said; "You had no way of dealing with them, Woody and I thought this was ideal." She refused to believe her precious son was violent. Watching them rest in warmth with food I could only have consideration for them. I went to look at Billy and Chastity after two years. Many times I stared in their room in Florida where their possessions were abandoned and cried. My children were in the hands of Katy who abhorred me energetically. I've lost my children, a piece of me! Katy said; "You can have them back if you stay with Tommy for three months." He was at the Vetran's bar in Winchester. I buried my face in his immense chest as we embraced tears streamed down quick as spilling water. I thought, you lying two bit bastard. He said; "I can't believe your alive." I begged each day to go see my house. It's a prefab brought in two sections. There's two fireplaces, a papa bear and baby bear wood burning stoves. I enjoyed chopping wood. I was on edge watching them back it in and out when a brick broke. It's my foundation I wanted this to go right.

Book excerpt: Noid told George I had a bag of cocaine and weed. I told George, "Search my house and drug test me." I had a bag laying out, but I knew he would say, "No." Noid pulled his gun and threatened to shoot Saline. He said; "Ooo you got your 32 I'm so scared." I said; "No I have my 38!" He has one of those irritating, annoying high pitched voices. Noid is so screwed up, it's sad he's almost gone. Mike sent me a hand made card with a rose, two hearts and a sash with our names on it.

Book excerpt: A major study of the collapse of the Soviet Union—showing how Gorbachev’s misguided reforms led to its demise “A deeply informed account of how the Soviet Union fell apart.”—Rodric Braithwaite, Financial Times “[A] masterly analysis.”—Joshua Rubenstein, Wall Street Journal In 1945 the Soviet Union controlled half of Europe and was a founding member of the United Nations. By 1991, it had an army four million strong with five thousand nuclear-tipped missiles and was the second biggest producer of oil in the world. But soon afterward the union sank into an economic crisis and was torn apart by nationalist separatism. Its collapse was one of the seismic shifts of the twentieth century. Thirty years on, Vladislav Zubok offers a major reinterpretation of the final years of the USSR, refuting the notion that the breakup of the Soviet order was inevitable. Instead, Zubok reveals how Gorbachev’s misguided reforms, intended to modernize and democratize the Soviet Union, deprived the government of resources and empowered separatism. Collapse sheds new light on Russian democratic populism, the Baltic struggle for independence, the crisis of Soviet finances—and the fragility of authoritarian state power.

Book excerpt: Renowned Pan-African and socialist theorist on the Bolshevik Revolution and its post-colonial legacy In his short life, Guyanese intellectual Walter Rodney emerged as one of the foremost thinkers and activists of the anticolonial revolution, leading movements in North America, Africa, and the Caribbean. Wherever he was, Rodney was a lightning rod for working-class Black Power organizing. His deportation sparked Jamaica’s Rodney Riots in 1968, and his scholarship trained a generation how to approach politics on an international scale. In 1980, shortly after founding the Working People’s Alliance in Guyana, the thirty-eight-year-old Rodney was assassinated. Walter Rodney’s Russian Revolution collects surviving texts from a series of lectures he delivered at the University of Dar es Salaam, an intellectual hub of the independent Third World. It had been his intention to work these into a book, a goal completed posthumously with the editorial aid of Robin D.G. Kelley and Jesse Benjamin. Moving across the historiography of the long Russian Revolution with clarity and insight, Rodney transcends the ideological fault lines of the Cold War. Surveying a broad range of subjects—the Narodniks, social democracy, the October Revolution, civil war, and the challenges of Stalinism—Rodney articulates a distinct viewpoint from the Third World, one that grounds revolutionary theory and history with the people in motion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russian conservatism is making a forceful return after a century of experimenting with socialism and liberalism. Conservatism is about managing change by ensuring that modernization evolves organically by building on the past. Conservatism has a natural attraction for Russia as its thousand-year long history is largely characterized by revolutionary change - the destructive process of uprooting the past to give way to modernity. Navigating towards gradual and organic modernization has been a key struggle ever since the Mongols invaded in the early 13th century and decoupled Russia from Europe and the arteries of international trade. Russian history has consisted of avoiding revolutions that are either caused by falling behind on modernization or making great leaps forward that disrupts socio-economic and political traditions. Russian conservatives are now tasked with harmonizing the conservative ideas of the 19th century with the revolutionary changes that shaped Russia in the 20th century. The rise of Asia now provides new opportunities as it enables Russia to overcome its fixation on the West and develop a unique Russian path towards modernization that harmonizes its Eurasian geography and history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “altogether astonishing” true story of a black American finding fame and fortune in Moscow and Constantinople at the turn of the 20th century (Booklist, starred review). The Black Russian tells the true story of Frederick Bruce Thomas, a man born in 1872 to former slaves who became prosperous farmers in Mississippi. But when his father was murdered, Frederick left the South to work as a waiter in Chicago and Brooklyn. Seeking greater freedom, he traveled to London, then crisscrossed Europe, and—in a highly unusual choice for a black American at the time—went to Russia. Because he found no color line there, Frederick settled in Moscow, becoming a rich and famous owner of variety theaters and restaurants. When the Bolshevik Revolution ruined him, he barely escaped to Constantinople, where he made another fortune by opening celebrated nightclubs as the “Sultan of Jazz.” Though Frederick reached extraordinary heights, the long arm of American racism, the xenophobia of the new Turkish Republic, and Frederick’s own extravagance brought his life to a sad close, landing him in debtor’s prison, where he died a forgotten man in 1928. “In his assiduously researched, prodigiously descriptive, fluently analytical” narrative (Booklist, starred review), Alexandrov delivers “a tale . . . so colourful and improbable that it reads more like a novel than a work of historical biography.” (The Literary Review). “[An] extraordinary story . . . [interpreted] with great sensitivity.” —The New York Review of Books

Book excerpt: Multi-award-winning author China Miéville captures the drama of the Russian Revolution in this “engaging retelling of the events that rocked the foundations of the twentieth century” (Village Voice) In February of 1917 Russia was a backwards, autocratic monarchy, mired in an unpopular war; by October, after not one but two revolutions, it had become the world’s first workers’ state, straining to be at the vanguard of global revolution. How did this unimaginable transformation take place? In a panoramic sweep, stretching from St. Petersburg and Moscow to the remotest villages of a sprawling empire, Miéville uncovers the catastrophes, intrigues and inspirations of 1917, in all their passion, drama and strangeness. Intervening in long-standing historical debates, but told with the reader new to the topic especially in mind, here is a breathtaking story of humanity at its greatest and most desperate; of a turning point for civilization that still resonates loudly today.
