Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents a comprehensive study of Russian prepositions, with a focus on expressing spatial characteristics. It primarily deals with how metaphorical and metonymical transfers motivate the use of Russian prepositional phrases, explaining the collocations of prepositional phrases with verbs as a realisation of a conceptual metaphor or a metonymy. The author confronts a problem that is attracting growing attention within present-day linguistics: the semantics of prepositions and cases. The book seeks to clarify the conceptual motivations for the use of the combinations of Russian primary prepositional phrases, as well as to demonstrate how their spatial meanings are extended into non-spatial domains. This book incorporates an analysis of a large number of items, including 30 combinations of primary prepositions with cases. An original contribution, the book is of interest to teachers and students studying Slavic languages, and to cognitive linguists.

Book excerpt: A concordance was prepared for machine-processed Russian text, showing the syntactic governors of prepositional phrases when the word preceding the preposition was a noun (P-1=N). The concordance showed that under this condition, Russian prepositions strongly tend to serve either an adnominal function or an adverbial function. These properties are not inherent in the individual prepositions, but are environmentally determined. The resultant grouping of prepositions is presented as information that can be used in a program for sentence-structure determination. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is concerned with prepositional elements in Slavic languages, prepositions, verbal prefixes and functional elements of prepositional nature. It argues that verbal prefixes are incorporated prepositions projecting their argument structure in the complement of the verbal root and that their meaning is based on the two-argument meaning of prepositions, enriched with the CAUSE operator. The book investigates idiomaticity in the realm of prefixed verbs and proposes a novel analysis of non-compositional prefixed verbs based on the operation of predicate transfer. It also offers a uniform analysis of cases. Prepositional as well as non-prepositional cases are treated as a reflection of the agreement operation, whereat the type of prepositional case is determined by semantic properties of the decomposed preposition. Furthermore, it examines prepositions from a diachronic perspective and argues that they can be grammaticalised as future markers under certain circumstances.

Book excerpt: Over 500 pages packed with 200 grammar topics and over 3000 annotated examples, Bootstrap Russian Grammar provides a comprehensive grounding in the fundamentals of Russian grammar using a proven highly effective systematic and incremental method. Starting from the beginning, the idea is progress in small self-contained steps (called 'topics'). Each topic builds on the last, by incrementally adding new grammatical patterns, new vocabulary and lots and lots of useful examples. Bootstrap Russian Grammar proves that a solid grounding in grammar basics is the key to mastering a second language. Grammatical rules and concepts are clearly with one topic building on the next - reenforcing the patterns learned earlier while introducing incrementally new material. Hundreds of new words are introduced alongside the grammar to help learners quickly build their Russian speaking and comprehension prowess. Each topic includes a thorough explanation of the grammar and then lots of examples that illustrate the grammar. Each example includes an English translation, as well as notes highlighting how each example illustrates that topic's grammar, as well as the meanings of new Russian words. THE COMPANION MOBILE APP A companion mobile application is now available called "Bootstrap Russian Grammar". The app includes all the same content as in this book - 200 grammar topics and over 3000 example phrases. And in additional, there is high quality Russian native-speaker audio for every example. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only 15 years ago bilingualism was somewhat outside the main debates in cognitive linguistics. Cognitive linguistics had, to a large extent, taken for granted the fact that language is embodied in our experience. However, not much attention was given to questions of whether any changes to our language repertoire alter the way we perceive the world around us. A growing body of recent research suggests that one cannot understand the cognitive foundations of language without looking at bi- and multilingual speakers. In this vein, the present book aims to contribute to the existing debate of the relationship between language, culture and cognition by assessing differences and similarities between monolingual and bilingual language acquisition and use. In particular, it investigates the effect of conceptual-semantic and pragmatic properties of constructions on code choice and code switching, as well as the impact of bilingual and bicultural education on speakers’ cognitive development. This collective volume systematises, reviews, and promotes a range of theoretical perspectives and research techniques that currently inform work across the disciplines of bilingualism and code switching.
