Book excerpt: In the 11th century, Kiev closely adhered to the Byzantine traditions in producing the first Russian enamels. Progress was interrupted by the Mongol invasions in the 13th century. There was, however, a revival of the arts in the 16th century, and during the 17th century the Kremlin Armory in Moscow and various northern trading centers emerged as major bases for the manufacture of liturgical and secular enamels, while the program of westernization initiated by Peter the Great in the early 18th century attracted foreign artisans who brought their own techniques to the capital, St Petersburg. The 19th century closed with a dichotomy of styles: classicizing, courtly traditions flourished in St Petersburg, as demonstrated in the art of pre-eminent master Carl Faberge. However, Moscow served as the heart of the Russian Revival movement, and the vibrantly colored and exotic-looking revival enamels are also prized by collectors today.

Book excerpt: Within the late tenth century, Kiev produced enamelled liturgical and some secular objects that adhered to Byzantine traditions. During the course of the 17th century the Kremlin Armoury in Moscow and various northern trading centres emerged as major bases for the manufacture of both liturgical and secular enamels while the key to the programme of westernization initiated by Peter the Great in the early 18th century was the attraction of foreign artisans who brought their own techniques to the new capital of St. Petersburg. The nineteenth century closed with a dichotomy of styles: classicizing, courtly traditions that flourished in St. Petersburg, all of which were demonstrated in the art of the pre-eminent master, Carl Faberge. However, Moscow served as the heart of the Russian revival movement, and it is the vibrantly coloured and exotic-looking revival enamels that are so highly prized by collectors today. Russia drew from many cultures to develop its own distinctive styles and methods of enamelling; its strategic location on the trade routes between western Europe and Asia, and between Scandinavia and the Byzantine and Islamic Near East was particularly relevant. The enamels illustrated in this book are from three sources: Henry Walters, the founder of the gallery in Baltimore that bears his family's name, visited St Petersburg and patronized the firm of Carl Faberge in the summer of 1900, while Marjorie Merriweather Post's superb holdings of Russian and French 18th and 19th century decorative arts are housed in the Hillwood Museum in Washington D.C. The third source is a private collector who began exploring the entire range of subjects, styles and technoques of enamelling associated with the Russian revival movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gathers together 17 articles published over the last 30 years, together with one appearing here for the first time. Their focus is primarily on enamel, the brilliant and colourful art form for which the Byzantines were famous throughout the medieval world, but sculpture and glyptics also figure. The author examines not only works which have retained the form in which they were first created, but others which have had their original Byzantine elements re-used, often by artists in the West. While most of the works featured here have been known to scholars before, one was unknown prior to its first publication in 2006.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paula Israelewicz, the Russian-born linguist and librarian has made available to Western readers, in an English translation, Reminiscences of a Russian Antiquarian Bookseller, the memoirs, written at an advanced age by eldest Moscow book dealer L.A. Glazer. The volume recounts Glazer’s sixty years’ experience in the book world of his time and place. Throughout the eight chapters, Glazer gives the reader a detailed account of his encounters with booklovers in all walks of life; noted bibliophiles, scholars, bookmen and bibliographers, writers, actors, musicians and also students whom he inspired with an interest for books. The many ‘treasures’ and private collections handled by Glazer during his long career are described in the book, mostly Russian works from the 16th to the 20th century, writings of Russian authors such as Pushkin and many others. The beginning of Glazer’s career coincided with a period after the revolution. For the Western reader it is interesting to realize that even under the Soviet regime ‘normal’ life went on in the milieu dedicated to books. Perhaps reading and book collecting constituted an ‘escape’ from the troubles of daily life, the persecutions of the Stalin era, and the horrors of World War Two.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though enamel buttons have been around for centuries and are favorites of button collectors, there has not been a book completely dedicated to their study . . . until now! Author Karen L. Cohen brings her unique perspective as an enamelist, Studio Button Artist, and educator to Enamel Buttons: An Essential Resource for Collectors. Meticulous research combined with her insights about the properties of enamel and the techniques used in buttons make this a must-have book for every collector. Hundreds of photos provide examples of the various techniques and button types and are a valuable resource for study. Cohen explains why things look like they do, such as why Motiwala Bros. “Liquid Enamel” buttons look like they flow, while also helping the collector distinguish between closely related techniques, such as Champlevé and Cloisonné or Monochrome and Grisaille. Her extensive research on the evolution of enameling techniques provides the history chapter with fascinating facts intertwined with how they relate to enamel buttons. Cohen has documented many of the enamelist makers along with their back marks, making it easier for collectors to identify button finds. The appendices include related information such as how to identify enamel look-alikes such as CPE (cold plastic enamel) and restoration techniques. If you already collect enamel buttons, this is an essential resource for understanding your collection in more depth. If you are curious about the topic, this book tells it all: history, material, techniques and embellishments, makers, and more. If you are a collector of other types of enamelware or are fascinated with enameling or are someone who resells enamels such as antique dealers, this book is an excellent resource about the various aspects of enamel in general. Lastly, it’s a button book you will enjoy paging through again and again, admiring the hundreds of glorious enamel buttons!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enameling on metal is not difficult. It is an exacting art which demands careful attention to such details as cleaning, application and firing, but it cannot be called “hard to do.” In my opinion a technical process such as enameling becomes as “easy” or “hard” to do as the one doing it makes it for himself. If one proposes to be an artist, he never considers such an ambiguous term, but works with only one idea in mind; that is, to finish to his own satisfaction the present piece of work so that he may be released to start the next. There can be no termination to art endeavor, for, especially after finishing an enamel, there are always variations of color, texture and motif which come to one’s mind. The process of making and firing an enamel, therefore, constitutes a truly creative activity.
