Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia as an American Problem This book is an earnest attempt to interest my fellow-citizens in the great problem of Russia's reconstruction. I have tried to present that problem as a challenge to America in the hope that I might thereby render a service of friendship to Russia and a service of loyalty to my own country. My interest in Russia dates back to my boyhood. Thirty years ago it was my good fortune to fall under the inspiration of that great Russian, Sergius Michaelovitch Kravchinski, best known by his pseudonym, "Sergius Stepniak." That brave and brilliant revolutionist first aroused my interest in the Russian revolutionary struggle, and through all the intervening years that interest has grown. It has been my good fortune to know intimately and well many of the brave men and women whose courage and sacrifice maintained the long struggle against czarism. Inspired and guided by these friends, I have tried to understand Russia and its great political and economic problems. This brief autobiographical note will serve to explain to the reader why I have felt justified in writing so freely about Russian problems, both in this volume and elsewhere. My studies of Russian history and politics antedated the Revolution by many years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1919, at the height of the anti-leftist Palmer Raids conducted by the Wilson administration, the anarchist activist and writer Emma Goldman was deported to the nascent Soviet Union. Despite initial plans to fight the deportation order in court, Goldman eventually acquiesced in order to take part in the new revolutionary Russia herself. While initially supportive of the Bolsheviks, with some reservations, Goldman’s firsthand experiences with Bolshevik oppression and corruption prompted her titular disillusionment and eventual emigration to Germany. In My Disillusionment in Russia, Goldman records her travels throughout Russia as part of a revolutionary museum commission, and her interactions with a variety of political and literary figures like Vladimir Lenin, Maxim Gorky, John Reed, and Peter Kropotkin. Goldman concludes her account with a critique of the Bolshevik ideology in which she asserts that revolutionary change in institutions cannot take place without corresponding changes in values. My Disillusionment in Russia had a troubled publication history, since the first American printing in 1923 omitted the last twelve chapters of what was supposed to be a thirty-three chapter book. (Somehow, the last chapters failed to reach the publisher, who did not suspect the book to be incomplete.) The situation was remedied with the publication of the remaining chapters in 1924 as part of a volume titled My Further Disillusionment in Russia. This Standard Ebooks edition compiles both volumes into a single volume, following the intent of the original manuscript. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: The Marquis de Custine's unique perspective on a vast, fascinating country in the grip of oppressive tyranny In 1839, encouraged by his friend Balzac, Custine set out to explore Russia. His impressions turned into what is perhaps the greatest and most influential of all books about Russia under the Tsars. Rich in anecdotes as much about the court of Tsar Nicholas as the streets of St Petersburg, Custine is as brilliant writing about the Kremlin as he is about the great northern landscapes. An immediate bestseller on publication, Custine's book is also a central book for any discussion of 19th century history, as - like de Tocqueville's Democracy in America - it dramatizes far broader questions about the nature of government and society.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian-American Relations, March, 1917-March, 1920: Documents and Papers It is axiomatic that upon the re-establishment of normal cul tural, commercial, and political relations with the Russian peo ple depends any adequate solution of the problems of food supply and the revival of industry and trade which involve the whole world. In the belief that the first requisite for the renewal of these essential relationships between the United States and Russia is a fuller knowledge of our Government's Russian policy during the past three years, this Association on August 2, 1919, invited Dr. John A. Ryan, Mr. J. Henry Scattergood, and. Mr. William Allen White to direct a' study of russian-american relations since the overthrow of the tsar. The result is this volume of documents which, because of its objective and non-partisan character will, we, believe, contribute towards the formation of an enlightened public opinion on this most important aspect of our foreign relations. This Association plans to conduct, as One of its activities, further investigations of similar character into other phases of our foreign policy. James G. Mcdonald, Chairman of the League of Free Nations Association. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America's Possible Share, in the Economic Future of Russia On the other hand, one of the most significant results of this War will be the material reconstruction of Europe. This recon struction will take place not only because there are many regions throughout Europe where the hurricane of the War has destroyed everything, but also because there are and there will be strong movements among the masses of the European peoples, demand ing better living conditions. The democratic governments of Europe have already acknowledged these movements and will have to acknowledge them further. The material reconstruction of Europe on the necessary scale is possible only through two factors: the participation of American capital in European industrial life and the develop ment of Russia's enormous natural resources and man-power. L Just as the political resurrection of Russia is the key to the solution of the entire European political problem, - without peace in Russia there never can be peace in Europe, - so the economic resurrection of Russia is to a great extent the key to the solution of the economic problem of Europe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soviet-American Relations, 1917-1920: Russia Leaves the War When this study was first contemplated, the intention was not to re construct in detail the happenings of the initial months of the Soviet American relationship, but rather to attempt a critical appraisal of the actions and policies of the two governments in their relations with each other over a much longer span of time. It soon became apparent, however, ' that despite the existence of several valuable secondary works on individual phases of Soviet - American relations in the early period, there was no general treatment of this subject, tapping all the sources available today, that could serve as adequate foundation for critical judgment. In these circumstances there was no alternative but to delve into the original source materials and to attempt to unravel, if only for one's own instruction, the tangled web of what actually occurred. The present volume brings the first fruits of these researches, re lating to the period between the November Revolution of 1917 and Russia's final departure, in March 1918, from the ranks of the war ring powers. It is, admittedly, a heavily detailed account; some may think too much so. In attempting to bring together the available evi dence on events at once so complex and so controversial, I have pre ferred to err on the side of explicitness rather than to run the risk, or invite the suspicion, of partiality in the selection of material. But be> yond that: the more I saw of these records of the doings of an official generation slightly older than my own, the more it was borne in upon me that the genuine image of the diplomatic process is hardly to be recaptured in historical narrative unless the lens through which it is viewed is a sharp one and the human texture of which it consists becomes visible in considerable detail. The acts and deci sions of statesmanship will seldom be found entirely intelligible if viewed apart from the immediate context of time and circumstance -information, associates, pressures, prejudices, impulses, and mo mentary necessities - in which they occur. Discussion of its affairs passionately bitter. We are able to disagree about France or Fiume Without losing our temper. But difference of opinion about Russia distils a peculiar venom. This was very noticeable to me over there. Disagree ments were all passionate and personal. I attributed it to nearness to the problems and perhaps to some infectious ness in the excessive partisanship which the Russians bring to their political controversies. But since I have returned to America I find it just as noticeable here. The subject of Russia turns dinner-table discussions into brawls, turns old friendships into feuds.
