Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia a Handbook on Commercial and Industrial Conditions The Russian Empire, possessing a greater area of contiguous terri tory than any other country m the world, 18 still m a comparatively early stage of commercial development, although the foreign com merce of European Russia alone, including Finland, amounted to more than $1, 261 000 000 in 1912. The possibilities of trade in this vast territory are little known to the great mass of business men in the United States, and it is with the object of giving a general view of economic conditions in that country that this monograph has been prepared. In fact the Russian Empire as a whole IS only slightly more thickly settled than Norway and Mexico, which average and 19. 7 inhabitants per square mile respectively. In per cent of the population Of European Russia proper per cent of the population of Russian Poland, 12. 9 per cent of the population of the Caucasus 11 per cent of that Of Siberia, 13. 5 per cent Of the population Of entral Asia, and 14. 6 per cent of the population of Finland lived in towns. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia and Reform IN this book I try to summarise the chief things which English men ought to know, if they wish to form an intelligent judgment of what is now taking place in Russia. 'we have arrived at one of the most critical turning-points in Russian history, but present events are the crisis of a long and dramatic story. Without an acquaintance with the beginning of the chapter which is now in progress, we cannot hope to understand the end. Book excerpt: The Marquis de Custine's unique perspective on a vast, fascinating country in the grip of oppressive tyranny In 1839, encouraged by his friend Balzac, Custine set out to explore Russia. His impressions turned into what is perhaps the greatest and most influential of all books about Russia under the Tsars. Rich in anecdotes as much about the court of Tsar Nicholas as the streets of St Petersburg, Custine is as brilliant writing about the Kremlin as he is about the great northern landscapes. An immediate bestseller on publication, Custine's book is also a central book for any discussion of 19th century history, as - like de Tocqueville's Democracy in America - it dramatizes far broader questions about the nature of government and society.

Book excerpt: Born into a noble family with a strong military tradition, Armand de Caulaincourt had been Napoleon’s Ambassador to Russia; Minister for Foreign Affairs; political advisor; and during the disastrous Russian campaign, his personal aide. In this unique document—the first English translation of the original French manuscript—the French statesman presents a comprehensive picture of the supreme crisis of Napoleon’s career, with graphic accounts of the French army’s advance into Russia, the occupation of Moscow, and the horrors of retreat. “By far the most important addition to Napoleonic documentation published in modern times.”—The London Times “When General de Caulaincourt laid down his pen he had completed, whether he knew it or not, a masterpiece.”—The New York Times A superb biography, history, and memoir in one unforgettable volume, the work will fascinate students, teachers, scholars, and history buffs alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greater Russia the Continental Empire, of the Old World Many books have been written on Russia and its people. The reason that the number is again increased is due to the fact that Russia is developing more rapidly than any other nation, and that Siberia is very different from the inert, barren, dismal country conventionally described. The outward changes are numerous and easily recognised by one who remembers Russia as it was under the rule of Alexander II., the Great Tsar Liberator. Nor is it difficult to describe the altered conditions, and explain some of the processes by which the transformation has been effected. There has been a great awakening of Russia. The people, debarred generally from active participation in politics, have directed their energies towards the commercial and industrial exploitation of their native land. They are active, strenuous, and persevering; they have advanced in civilisation as well as increased their wealth and power. By territorial expansion Russia has taken a long stride forward towards the attainment of world supremacy, and boasts that the step is but the beginning of her progress towards the realisation of her manifest destiny. This is the greater Russia to which the attention of the reader is invited. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Commercial Invasion of Europe England has not been alone, however, in expending large amounts of capital in military campaigns. The powers have all spent great sums in the last year in the military operations in China. The floating of loans in that connection has made demands upon capital that have further embarrassed industrial affairs. Here in Russia we have had, in addition to those unfavorable influences, other embarrassing conditions. The Government has been building less railroad than has been constructed at any time during the last ten years. As the Government is the chief customer for railroad supplies, de pression has naturally followed in all industries depending upon railroad construction. Then there have been industrial enter prises organized here ou a not too sound financial basis. But as we get farther away from some of these special causes of depression. I think the industrial crisis will end. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
