Book Synopsis The Archaeology of Seafaring in Ancient South Asia by : Himanshu Prabha Ray
Download or read book The Archaeology of Seafaring in Ancient South Asia written by Himanshu Prabha Ray and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-08-14 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to European expansion, communities of the Indian subcontinent had a strong maritime orientation. In this new archaeological study, Himanshu Prabha Ray explores seafaring activity, religious travel and political economy in this ancient period. By using archaeological data from the Red Sea to the Indonesian archipelago, she reveals how the early history of peninsular South Asia is interconnected with that of its Asian and Mediterranean partners in the Indian Ocean Region. The book departs from traditional studies, focusing on the communities maritime history rather than agrarian expansion and the emergence of the state. Rather than being a prime mover in social, economic and religious change, the state is viewed as just one participant in a complex interplay of social actors, including merchants, guilds, boat-builders, sailors, pilgrims, religious clergy and craft-producers. A study that will be welcomed by students of Archaeology and Ancient History, particularly those interested in South Asian Studies.

Book Synopsis Ancient India in Its Wider World by : Grant Richard Parker
Download or read book Ancient India in Its Wider World written by Grant Richard Parker and published by U of M Center for South Asian Studies. This book was released on 2008 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawn from a variety of academic disciplines and perspectives, this volume approaches ancient India both historically and geographically. The primary temporal focus lies in India's "Early Historic" period, from the mid-first millennium BCE through the mid-first millennium CE. The geographic focus is shifted landward rather than seaward and is centered on South Asia rather than the Mediterranean. Contributors examine power and material culture; Mediterranean image making, which looks at Greek and Roman understandings of India; and language and otherness, which explores Indian knowledge and understandings of outsiders. The volume as a whole directs us to the complex webs and networks that throughout Indian history have linked South Asians to each other and to the world beyond the subcontinent. A very wide world indeed. Contributors are Shinu A. Abraham, Madhav Deshpande, Grant Parker, Alka Patel, Himanshu P. Ray, James Romm, Martha Ann Selby, and Thomas R. Trautmann. Grant Parker is Assistant Professor of Classics, Stanford University. Carla M. Sinopoli is Professor of Anthropology and Curator and Director, Museum of Anthropology, College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, University of Michigan.
Download or read book Medieval Andhra written by Alpana Pandey and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book delves into the lives of the Telugus in the 17th and 18th centuries. It highlights the existing social conditions in the region. At the same time it emphasises on certain changes witnessed due to the Muslim rule and the arrival of the traders from European countries. Besides their economic activities, the traders made inroads into the socio - political realm of the region. The Qutb-Shahi dynasty, the short Mughal rule under Aurangazeb, and the subsequent Asaf Jahi rule culminated in the establishment of a distinct Hyderabadi Culture, that is famous for religious tolerance and amalgamation of different cultures, and the emergence of Deccani as a language of the people! The two new religions, Islam and Christanity, created curiosity, conflicts and conversions in the region. The lack of patrons dealt a blow to the Brahmanical religion. Alternative medicinal system of the Islamic world, Unani was introduced. The Europeans introduced western surgery to the Royalty. The book highlights the emergence of a social order with new castes and sub castes, the change in the social hierarchy, the womens position, social reforms, a new dressing style in the upper section of society and the cosmopolitan luxury in the form of furniture, toiletry, jewelry etc.

Book Synopsis Undeserved Death: A Study on Suicide of Farmers in Andhra Pradesh (2000 - 2005) by : K.S. Bhat
Download or read book Undeserved Death: A Study on Suicide of Farmers in Andhra Pradesh (2000 - 2005) written by K.S. Bhat and published by Allied Publishers. This book was released on 2006-07-12 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The multi-dimensional nature of farmers' distress in several states of India is pushing farmers to commit suicides. The deficiencies in institutional factors — those related to credit, insurance, supply of inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and marketing —are becoming serious. Social factors such as the non-empowerment of elected local bodies, the exploitative attitude of moneylenders and merchants, and gender discrimination are aggravating the deprivation of small and marginal farmers and landless agricultural labourers. Compounding the crumbling institutional and social support systems are the other factors such as disconnection between research, education and extension organizations and rural realities, land degradation, unsustainable exploitation of groundwater and consecutive droughts. All these resulted in the agrarian crisis, more particularly in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamilnadu, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Gujarat and Punjab. Analyzing some of these factors pertaining to agrarian crisis and farmer's suicides, a pilot study and other articles in this book analytically bring out the prevailing situation in Andhra Pradesh. A few articles in the book also highlight the situation in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Punjab. Some of the implications discussed by the academicians, activists, researchers and others will definitely help the policy makers in their future programme to safeguard and strengthen the livelihood security of the families of resource-poor small and marginal farmers. The book will be of immense use both for the scholars and the government authorities.
