Book excerpt: Household savings behavior in China during the past 30 years has been studied by using econometric models with the time-varying-parameter technique. The rural sector and the urban sector are investigated separately. In comparison to previous studies on the same subject, the estimated models of the current study are more robust, and the results of the models are much more in line with results of similar studies of other countries.

Book excerpt: This book investigates the role of wealth in achieving sustainable rural economic development. The authors define wealth as all assets net of liabilities that can contribute to well-being, and they provide examples of many forms of capital – physical, financial, human, natural, social, and others. They propose a conceptual framework for rural wealth creation that considers how multiple forms of wealth provide opportunities for rural development, and how development strategies affect the dynamics of wealth. They also provide a new accounting framework for measuring wealth stocks and flows. These conceptual frameworks are employed in case study chapters on measuring rural wealth and on rural wealth creation strategies. Rural Wealth Creation makes numerous contributions to research on sustainable rural development. Important distinctions are drawn to help guide wealth measurement, such as the difference between the wealth located within a region and the wealth owned by residents of a region, and privately owned versus publicly owned wealth. Case study chapters illustrate these distinctions and demonstrate how different forms of wealth can be measured. Several key hypotheses are proposed about the process of rural wealth creation, and these are investigated by case study chapters assessing common rural development strategies, such as promoting rural energy industries and amenity-based development. Based on these case studies, a typology of rural wealth creation strategies is proposed and an approach to mapping the potential of such strategies in different contexts is demonstrated. This book will be relevant to students, researchers, and policy makers looking at rural community development, sustainable economic development, and wealth measurement.

Book excerpt: Until recently the use of agricultural credit as a developmental tool seemed clear and straightforward. Most concerned people believed that increases in the volume of cheap credit were necessary to boost agricultural production, and that the rural poor could be brought into the mainstream of development through supervised credit programs. It seemed that certain ideal types of rural credit institutions offered the promise of meeting farmers' credit needs, and that experience in the industrialized countries with cooperatives and specialized agricultural finance institutions could be effectively transplanted to low-income countries. This collection of readings highlights facets of rural financial markets that have often been neglected in discussions of agricultural credit in developing countries. It moves beyond a narrow concern with the simple provision of credit to a broad consideration of the performance of rural financial markets and of ways to improve the quality and range of financial services for low-income farmers. It reflects new thinking on the design, administration, evaluation and policy framework of rural finance and credit programs in developing countries.

Book excerpt: The book is an outcome of research conducted with National Sample Survey (NSS) household level data, National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) household level data and International Crop Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) household level data, spread over 2002-2012. The book focuses on four major issues: - What is the distribution pattern of farm income, paid out cost and net income of farm households--source wise and activity wise? - What is the saving propensity of households and what are the determinants of saving propensity with well-defined predictor variables? - What does the analysis of sources of investible funds suggest and which are the determinants of investment propensity? How are investible funds allocated between physical and financial assets? - Finally, what are the policy designs to influence saving and investment propensity? Which are the appropriate institutional, financial product and technological designs for mobilising savings from farm households?

Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: A, University of Calicut (MES Mampad College), course: M.com, language: English, abstract: The present study focuses on the investment attitude and awareness of rural people of Kalikavu village towards various investment avenues. It is because here, in this area there is no enough systematic studies and reports available. Hence there is a vast scope for studying in this area to measure the investment habits of people. The present study also focuses on the guiding factors, considering while choosing various investment portfolios and the levels of satisfaction on these investment avenues. India is basically regarded as a rural based country because of 68.84 percent of its population is living in rural areas. Likewise, in Kerala state around 52.3 percent of population is also living on rural villages. Thus it is very clear that in order to make India as a developed nation there should be an upliftment of the lives of rural people especially in their economic conditions through proper enhancement of savings and investment levels of people in rural areas. Thus investment is an important subject matter that can make major impacts on individual and economic developments. As societies investment increases the capacity to produce goods and services at lowest costs also increasing which leads to greater productivity and efficiency. This efficiency will also leads to economic growth. Thus savings and investments are important for supporting the rural industries. For this purpose their savings and investments should be mobilized and invested properly. But the fact is that many of the investors in rural area have no proper awareness on various investment avenues. Thus due to their lack of knowledge they are not ready to come forward to invest in various portfolios.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of past literature has assumed that households in developing countries save at the same marginal rate from all sources of income. But in rural Pakistan households save at very different marginal rates from different sources of income. The marginal propensity to save from those sources of income that are more variable and uncertain - like external remittances - is much higher than from those sources of income that are more predictable - like rental income.Few studies have tried to measure how households in a developing country save from each of the different income sources at their disposal. To help fill that gap, Adams uses five-year panel data to examine how households in rural Pakistan save from each of seven separate sources of income. Adams finds that households save from different sources of income at significantly different marginal rates. For example, the marginal propensity to save from external remittances (0.711) is much higher than that for rental income (0.085). As the precautionary model of saving suggests, the reasons for this relate to uncertainty: income that is more variable tends to be saved at a higher marginal rate. Faced with incomplete capital and credit markets, households in rural Pakistan save quot;for a rainy dayquot; by putting away mainly those sources of income that are more variable and uncertain. This paper - a product of the Poverty Reduction Group, Poverty Reduction and Economic Management Network - is part of a larger effort in the network to understand how households use savings for investment and development in developing countries.

Book excerpt: The impact of technological development on household savings is of central importance to development students and practitioners attempting to devise effective policy for economic growth in general and agricultural capital formation in particular. For the predominantly agricultural economy of Bangladesh, this is an important issue due to the very low rate of growth in the agriculture sector there during the last three decades. This study investigates the relationship between investment opportunities and saving from a theoretical perspective, measures the impact of High Yielding Variety technology on saving in the case of Bangladesh, and compares the rate of return from some common types of investments of rural households in Bangladesh.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2011 the World Bank—with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation—launched the Global Findex database, the world's most comprehensive data set on how adults save, borrow, make payments, and manage risk. Drawing on survey data collected in collaboration with Gallup, Inc., the Global Findex database covers more than 140 economies around the world. The initial survey round was followed by a second one in 2014 and by a third in 2017. Compiled using nationally representative surveys of more than 150,000 adults age 15 and above in over 140 economies, The Global Findex Database 2017: Measuring Financial Inclusion and the Fintech Revolution includes updated indicators on access to and use of formal and informal financial services. It has additional data on the use of financial technology (or fintech), including the use of mobile phones and the Internet to conduct financial transactions. The data reveal opportunities to expand access to financial services among people who do not have an account—the unbanked—as well as to promote greater use of digital financial services among those who do have an account. The Global Findex database has become a mainstay of global efforts to promote financial inclusion. In addition to being widely cited by scholars and development practitioners, Global Findex data are used to track progress toward the World Bank goal of Universal Financial Access by 2020 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The database, the full text of the report, and the underlying country-level data for all figures—along with the questionnaire, the survey methodology, and other relevant materials—are available at www.worldbank.org/globalfindex.

From recurrent crises to ethnic conflicts and long-standing corruption, a raft of deep-rooted problems has led many to regard the continent as facing many hurdles to raise living standards. Yet Africa has made considerable progress in the past decade, with a GDP growth rate exceeding five percent in some regions. The African Successes series looks at recent improvements in living standards and other measures of development in many African countries with an eye toward identifying what shaped them and the extent to which lessons learned are transferable and can guide policy in other nations and at the international level. The third volume in the series, African Successes: Modernization and Development looks at the rise in private production in spite of difficult institutional and physical environments. The volume emphasizes the ways that technologies, including mobile phones, have made growth in some areas especially dynamic.
