Book excerpt: Health research in Canada has mostly focused on urban areas, often overlooking the unique issues faced by Canadians living in rural and remote areas. This volume provides the first comprehensive overview of the state of rural health and health care in Canada, from coast to coast and in northern communities. Three themes are highlighted: rural places matter to health, rural places are unique, and rural places are dynamic. The contributors bring insights and methodologies from nursing, social work, geography, epidemiology, and sociology and from community-based research to a full spectrum of topics: health literacy, rural health care delivery and training, Aboriginal health, web-based services and their application, rural palliative care, and rural health research and policy. Taken together, these wide-ranging and multifaceted explorations of the dynamic relationship between health and place offer researchers and policy-makers, students and practitioners a valuable resource for understanding the special, ever-changing needs of rural communities.

Download or read book Rural Women's Health written by Beverly Leipert and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2012-09-17 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The well-being of rural communities affects the well-being of those who reside in towns and cities because of rural-urban connections through food, drinking water, infectious disease, extreme environmental events, recreation, and for many, retirement residence. In rural areas themselves, women play a critical role in the health of their families and communities, yet women’s health is often marginalized or ignored. There have been limited studies to date about rural women and health in Canada. Filling an important gap in scholarship, this collection identifies priority issues that must be addressed to ensure these women’s well-being and offers innovative theoretical and methodological ideas for improvement. Rural Women’s Health integrates perspectives from rural practitioners, residents, and scholars in a variety of fields, including nursing, sociology, anthropology, and geography, to tackle issues relevant to diverse settings across the country. As such, it presents a national perspective on the nature of women’s health while respecting internal and regional diversity, as well as viewpoints from international scholarship.

Download or read book Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing Research at NIOSH written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-07-10 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The agriculture, forestry, and fishing sectors are the cornerstone of industries that produce food, fiber, and biofuel. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts research in order to improve worker safety and health in these sectors. This National Research Council book reviews the NIOSH Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing Program to evaluate the 1) relevance of its work to improvements in occupational safety and health and 2) the impact of research in reducing workplace illnesses and injuries. The assessment reveals that the program has made meaningful contributions to improving worker safety and health in these fields. To enhance the relevance and impact of its work and fulfill its mission, the NIOSH Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing Program should provide national leadership, coordination of research, and activities to transfer findings, technologies, and information into practice. The program will also benefit from establishing strategic goals and implementing a comprehensive surveillance system in order to better identify and track worker populations at risk.
Book Synopsis Health and Health Care in Northern Canada by : Rebecca Schiff
Download or read book Health and Health Care in Northern Canada written by Rebecca Schiff and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2021-09-15 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accounting for almost two-thirds of the country’s land mass, northern Canada is a vast region, host to rich natural resources and a diverse cultural heritage shared across Indigenous and non-Indigenous residents. In this book, the authors analyse health and health care in northern Canada from a perspective that acknowledges the unique strengths, resilience, and innovation of northerners, while also addressing the challenges aggravated by contemporary manifestations of colonialism. Old and new forms of colonial programs and policies continue to create health and health care disparities in the North. Written by individuals who live in and study the region, Health and Health Care in Northern Canada utilizes case studies, interviews, photographs, and more, to highlight the lived experiences of northerners and the primary health issues that they face. In order to maintain resilience, improve the positive outcomes of health determinants, and diminish negative stereotypes, we must ensure that northerners – and their cultures, values, strengths, and leadership – are at the centre of the ongoing work to achieve social justice and health equity.

Download or read book Fatal Consumption written by Robert F. Woollard and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on their four-year interdisciplinary study of British Columbia's Lower Fraser Basin, scholars from the various fields that contribute to environmental science ask why people claim to value sustainability while acting in an unsustainable fashion, and how to reduce consumption drastically and move toward a sustainable social system when society is specifically based on consumption. They analyze policy and propose tools for those charged with making decisions. The analysis, though specific in focus, should be applicable to most North American urban areas, and might interest urban planners, policy makers, and people interested in the link between health and a sustainable society.
