Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union of presently 27 member states has a large variety within its own boundaries. Still there are common policies for agriculture, food and rural areas, although with many differences in relation to specific conditions in member states. Due to policy reforms, starting with the Mac Sharry reform in 1992, the European Union is on a long-term path to a freer and open market with a lot of attention for food quality and the development of rural areas. For agriculture the `traditional¿ market and price policy is largely replaced by decoupled direct income support. Policies in relation to food quality, food safety and animal welfare as well as environment, landscape and rural development receive increased attention at EU and member state level. The European Union is becoming a leader in food standards and rural policy. Many well-known specialists contributed their up-to-date knowledge to this book. It has been developed in close collaboration with government officials and scientists, also in relation to courses organised by Wageningen Business School. The book can be used for scientific and professional education (bachelor level), but could function easily as background text in master courses. Business executives, government officials and participants of non-governmental organisations will find this book to be of interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union varies widely within its boundaries. Still, there are common policies for agriculture, food and rural areas, although with many differences in relation to specific conditions in Member States. Starting with the Mac Sharry reform in 1992, the EU is on a long-term path to freer and more open markets. Traditional EU market and price measures are now largely replaced by `decoupled¿ direct income support, and further steps are being prepared. There is increased attention at both EU and Member-State levels to food quality, food safety and animal welfare, as there is also to the environment and the development of rural areas. The Union is thus becoming a leader in food and rural policies. Many experts have contributed their up-to-date knowledge to this book. It is suitable for scientific and professional education at bachelor level, and as a supporting text in master level courses. Business executives, officials and non-governmental organisations will also find this book to be of interest. Second, completely revised edition. 'I am sure that it will give huge insight in the complex Common Agricultural Policy' Mariann Fischer-Boel at Brussels, 27 January 2010 'It might be argued that there is no need for another book on the CAP (...). But this book is rather different, and it certainly fills a gap in the literature.' Wilfred Legg, Eurochoices 9(2) 'This is a particularly innovative approach in phase with the way agricultural economics should now be taught.' Jean-Christoph Bureau, ERAE 37(4) 'Readers will be pleased by the broad perspective of this book, which covers many interesting EU policy areas.' Mariann Fischer-Boel (Preface) and David Blandford, JAE 62(1)

Book excerpt: This book presents the methodology and results of a three-year, eleven-country science-to-policy research project – Toward a Policy Model of Multifunctional Agriculture and Rural Development – undertaken between 2005 and 2008 and financed under the European Union's Sixth Framework program. It deals with an important contemporary policy issue: how best to ensure that an agriculturally-based policy can contribute to the development of rural regions. It tackles this problem in a number of different but complementary ways, primarily by the development of a unique and innovative dynamic systems model, POMMARD (a Policy Model of Multifunctional Agriculture and Rural Development).

Book excerpt: This open access short reader looks into the dynamics which have reshaped rural development and human landscapes in European agriculture and the role of immigrant people. Within this framework it analyses contemporary rural migrations and the emergence of immigrants in relation to the incorporation of agrarian systems into global markets, the European agricultural governance (CAP), and the struggle of local territories as differentiated practices in constant stress between innovation and resilience. It specifically explores the case of immigrant shepherds to describe the reconfiguration of agriculture systems and rural landscapes in Europe following intense immigration and the related provision of skilled labour at a relatively low cost. Being written in a very accessible way, this reader is an interesting read to students, researchers, academics, policy makers, and practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although at different stages of development, the countries of the Western Balkans—Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, and Serbia—face similar challenges in transforming and modernizing their agricultural food production (agri-food) sectors. Their rural sectors have lagged behind the rest of the economy in growth and poverty reduction, their agri-food sectors are undercapitalized and highly fragmented, and their agro-processing capacities limited. Agricultural trade deficits are widening, climate change is posing increasing risks to farm incomes, and low-cost imports and changing consumer preferences are further eroding competitiveness. Added to this scenario are the challenges and opportunities of adopting the EU 'acquis communautaire' relating to agriculture. Based on recent World Bank reports prepared in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the European Commission Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development, 'The Changing Face of Rural Space: Agriculture and Rural Development in the Western Balkans' identifies what is constraining agricultural competitiveness in these countries, examines public expenditures in agriculture, and diagnoses key challenges for agricultural policy makers. The book expands on previous findings to provide a strategic policy framework for transforming and modernizing the agri-food sector and, in the context of region’s ongoing process of integration with the European Union, creating a dynamic rural space in the Western Balkans. The book offers Western Balkan governments and international donors a shared vision of the goals and directions their agriculture and rural development policies and programs might take.

Book excerpt: This book explores how the EU externally governs through agriculture and rural development and how this external governance shapes rural spaces in Georgia. Analysing two EU policy instruments – Geographical Indications and the LEADER rural development programme – the book develops a novel way of studying the consequences of EU external actions ‘on the ground’ by bringing in sociological, rural studies, and political geography concepts of rural space. In doing so, it analyses the often less visible processes at local levels and in rural areas and proposes how to improve analyses of EU external actions more generally. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of EU external policy, EU foreign policy, agricultural and rural development, post-Soviet politics, and, more broadly, to EU studies.
