Book Synopsis Running beyond borders by : Dr. Thomas Taut
Download or read book Running beyond borders written by Dr. Thomas Taut and published by Egoth Verlag. This book was released on 2020-12-03 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In SPORTaktiv, one of Austria ́s biggest magazine covering active sports, the report about my sporty trip around the world started with this particular statement. That was a bit disappointing for me at first sight. The editor in chief was obviously surprised by my appearance regardless of all of his years of experience. Right at the start of my key note speeches I almost always experience the same amazement, sometimes followed by the bewildered question: "This is – you?! " Your expectations and my reality are colliding nearly at the speed of light. Oh yes, I had to become used to look into so many disappointed eyes right at the start of my presentations. "Nobody on the street would believe, what Thomas Taut from Vienna, Austria, has achieved." To run seven full marathons on seven continents within seven (consecutive) days is a mighty challenge, indeed. But exactly how is one capable of accomplishing this task actually supposed to look like? Well, personally I would expect winners: well trained sportsmen, athletic from head to toe, young and strong, powerful and fast, lean and successful. As is for instance the following couple: Yes, I believe they could make it both after some specific training. And then comes my appearance, as an extreme athlete. Old, slightly obese - at least in comparison -, plagued by allergic asthma. But it is ME who has conquered the World Marathon Challenge and no one else from Austria! Oh, I see. Those impressions do not fit together and this discrepancy matters. It is therefore important right at the start to overcome any such prejudices and to open your hearts to me. Only after having heard or read my story in full you will be able to expand your own imaginations. And you, too, will become able to realize and utilize a lot more of your inner powers. I may tell here not from my previous achievements as a nuclear physicist, not from my several other former professions and not from gardening, my second biggest passion. These are not the reasons you grabbed this book for the first time. No, this writing is all about my side activities as a hobby-jogger like million others! I am of limited talents in all kinds of sport, unfortunately. But I am in with all my body and soul. I have started running as late as at the age of 35 years. But I had soon developed big visions. I have never won a race. But also never quit one. My motto is: "Not fast – not last! " I have never been a top athlete. But I have been following the road all the way to extreme sport. And with this new self-confidence I want to answer the above question: "This is – you?! " now with "Yes, this is me. You do not have to be perfect to accomplish the unthinkable. And believe me, there are still several more challenges left on my bucket list! " The IT nerds use to say: "It's not a bug, it's a feature! " Yes, I may be old, small and slower than previously. But despite my age of 53 years I had been rising up to the same level as Vanessa and Marcel, Austria ́s top sportswoman and –man of the year 2019! Vanessa Herzog, the world champion in speed skating, can be booked for key note speeches on the very same platform as I (Sports.Selection). And my first book has been published by the very same company (egoth) as the biography of Marcel Hirscher, the eight times skiing world cup champion, winner of several titles at Olympic games and world championships. Both our books stand close together and fight there for the attention of interested readers. Do you want to know how this development was possible? What it took? How it all began? But also which personalities I got to know on the way? Which lessons I have learned? And how much it enriched my life? Let yourself be taken onto a round-the-world trip into the incredible!

Book Synopsis Running Beyond Limits by : Andrew Murray
Download or read book Running Beyond Limits written by Andrew Murray and published by . This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Scotsman Andrew Murray's attempt to run from Scotland to the Sahara without a break. It is 2,659 miles from John O'Groats at the northern tip of mainland Britain to Merzouga in Morocco and Andrew planned to complete the distance in 85 days. That's the equivalent of 100 marathons run end to end--and not a single day off to recover. Attempting to cram in a staggering 8,000 calories every day is extremely difficult and doesn't stop the body from beginning to break down. This book is the story of that run, interwoven between tales of extraordinary endurance events in some of the most extreme locations in the world. It answers the question, 'why do it?', and offers a gripping insight into what drives an extreme athlete to break new ground. Murray's epic journey was the subject of a BBC documentary.
Download or read book Writing Beyond Race written by bell hooks and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the conditions needed for our nation to bridge cultural and racial divides? By "writing beyond race," noted cultural critic bell hooks models the constructive ways scholars, activists, and readers can challenge and change systems of domination. In the spirit of previous classics like Outlaw Culture and Reel to Real, this new collection of compelling essays interrogates contemporary cultural notions of race, gender, and class. From the films Precious and Crash to recent biographies of Malcolm X and Henrietta Lacks, hooks offers provocative insights into the way race is being talked about in this "post-racial" era.
Book Synopsis Winning the Race by : John McWhorter
Download or read book Winning the Race written by John McWhorter and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2006-12-28 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his first major book on the state of black America since the New York Times bestseller Losing the Race, John McWhorter argues that a renewed commitment to achievement and integration is the only cure for the crisis in the African-American community. Winning the Race examines the roots of the serious problems facing black Americans today—poverty, drugs, and high incarceration rates—and contends that none of the commonly accepted reasons can explain the decline of black communities since the end of segregation in the 1960s. Instead, McWhorter posits that a sense of victimhood and alienation that came to the fore during the civil rights era has persisted to the present day in black culture, even though most blacks today have never experienced the racism of the segregation era. McWhorter traces the effects of this disempowering conception of black identity, from the validation of living permanently on welfare to gansta rap’s glorification of irresponsibility and violence as a means of “protest.” He discusses particularly specious claims of racism, attacks the destructive posturing of black leaders and the “hip-hop academics,” and laments that a successful black person must be faced with charges of “acting white.” While acknowledging that racism still exists in America today, McWhorter argues that both blacks and whites must move past blaming racism for every challenge blacks face, and outlines the steps necessary for improving the future of black America.
Book Synopsis Wild Horses Run: Beyond the Sugared Hills by : Diane Prebula
Download or read book Wild Horses Run: Beyond the Sugared Hills written by Diane Prebula and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for God's creation rings like timeless bells, blows like a train from yesterday's valley announcing the joy of His rescue, relief, and plan-hope and a future beyond our imagination. Simple visions of His majesty and compassion flash through the pages of Wild Horses Run-Beyond the Sugared Hills as in the following selection from the poem, "Appaloosa Sky": You have blown lavender light on the hills. The afternoon is sinking into dusk, soaking into the ground of our breath . . . The appaloosa sky dapples with a thousand small clouds. They begin to merge as they drift over the hills. Hope begins to rise within-it dapples our countenance. This collection of poems praises the Lord of all creation for speaking to and through us. He does this in spite of our sin and frailty. Consider the following excerpt from the poem, "The Invitation": Everything's in flux, and I'm fading with age as our culture draws the breath of its final images, its concluding sentences. This ending may drag on for years or decades; we cry for rescue with eyes of faith. You infuse us with a scent of home. We've welcomed everyone to join us-so many choose to decline. The pilgrimage revealed on these pages reflects the pain and suffering we all experience in this fallen world, especially in these postmodern days. God's people cry, "Come, Lord Jesus!" The following lines from the poem, "Seabird Passing" praise Him: It's You, Lord; You absorb A spout of tears as I press into the chest of Your Spirit. You touch me with a breath of Your boundless beauty. Ponder these verses from the poem, "Piano Solos": You interpret the music and dance to color us through winds by the ocean. You draw us through forests and over hills. But again, You take us back to Your lost cities, where we stumble through the brown haze; we learn to breathe through the back side of everything, including ourselves.

Book Synopsis Beyond the Best Dressed by : Esther Zuckerman
Download or read book Beyond the Best Dressed written by Esther Zuckerman and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore two dozen of the most glamorous, scandalous, and history-making Oscar looks in Beyond the Best Dressed, film and culture critic Esther Zuckerman's personality-filled romp through red carpet fashion, complete with original fashion drawings from illustrator Montana Forbes. From the show-stoppingly elegant (Halle Berry winning the award for Monster’s Ball in a breathtaking Elie Saab) to the decidedly kooky (Adam Rippon in a formal harness), the Academy Awards Telecast is one of the few nights of the year devoted entirely to glamor (in all its forms). Even in the age of streaming, millions upon millions of people sit down at the same time, turn on their televisions, and watch celebrities strut down the red carpet (and, sure, win some awards). Now fans can relive the glamor, drama, and lasting legacy of some of the most influential outfits from more than ninety years of the Oscar in Beyond the Best Dressed: A Cultural History of the Most Glamorous, Radical, and Scandalous Oscar Fashion. In twenty-five essays, culture writer Esther Zuckerman explores the iconic fashion choices that made history on the most elegant stage of all, and analyzes the cultural impact of wardrobe decisions both absurd and wonderful. Beginning with Hattie McDaniel’s historic and trendsetting turquoise gown in 1940 (worn at a table segregated from her white agent), Zuckerman goes beyond the “best of” lists to shine a deserved spotlight on the truly unforgettable outfits–and deciphers what those outfits represented. Beyond the Best Dressed is a first-of-its-kind commemoration of Oscar fashion that perfectly captures the glitz and the glamor for anyone who has ever been to an Oscar watch party (or texted their friends while they watched alone). Fully illustrated with whimsical fashion drawings of the outfits–including Michelle Williams' golden Versace, Sharon Stone's iconic Gap t-shirt, and Rita Moreno's groundbreaking dress worn in both 1962 and 2018–this book is a joyful and vivid odyssey that doesn’t stop at the hem of the dress, delving deeper into the cultural effect of these fashion flash points with research and original reporting.
