The underlying assumption here is that unless you program such activities, professionals won't develop; they will just teach, a process from which, presumably, nothing of value is to be learned. Mastered or flipped, reinvention of classrooms exacts a high cost, as indeed, does all teaching wherever it is carefully and lovingly taught. I would revise the old adage about teaching: "Those who can, teach; those who either can't or haven't shouldn't." It takes a lifetime to discover that those in authority may not know what is better, that older need not imply wiser. It is a difficult lesson for a teacher, enthroned with degrees and remuneration, to teach. The irony of the term "empowerment" is that power cannot be taught or acquired as if it were simply some specialized fund of information. Only we have privileged access to the process that shifts and roils inside our own experience. And only we can alter that process once it makes itself known to us. The mind we have is the only one we get: furnished or unfurnished.

From the bestselling author of Rich and Pretty comes a suspenseful and provocative novel keenly attuned to the complexities of parenthood, race, and class. Leave the World Behind explores how our closest bonds are reshaped—and unexpected new ones are forged—in moments of crisis. Amanda and Clay head out to a remote corner of Long Island expecting a vacation: a quiet reprieve from life in New York City, quality time with their teenage son and daughter, and a taste of the good life in the luxurious home they’ve rented for the week. But a late-night knock on the door breaks the spell. Ruth and G. H. are an older couple—it’s their house, and they’ve arrived in a panic. They bring the news that a sudden blackout has swept the city. But in this rural area—with the TV and internet now down, and no cell phone service—it’s hard to know what to believe. Should Amanda and Clay trust this couple—and vice versa? What happened back in New York? Is the vacation home, isolated from civilization, a truly safe place for their families? And are they safe from one other?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ninety-five years ago the enormous interplanetary space vehicle, the Pacifica, with a numerous crew, suddenly and inexplicably disappeared as it neared the planet Pluto. None of the probes directed towards the planet after the disaster found any evidence that the vessel and its crew had ever existed. Now, a century later, the wreck of the huge ship has been sighted, lying shrouded in the hazy-black starlight on the Plutonian surface. A shuttle has been fitted for the dangerous journey to the seventh planet, and with three crewmembers aboard, has made the first attempt to reach Pluto since the loss of the Pacifica. As the shuttle approaches the planet, it also 'suddenly and inexplicably' disappears and is lost. Although the crew of three is believed to have perished, they have not, and will carry on with their mission: to determine how the Pacifica met its fate. The truth, however, may be found only beyond reason, or even beyond imagination, and the three astronauts may wish that they never sought answer to this great mystery.

Book Synopsis Just So-Me Stories by : Matt Greenfield
Download or read book Just So-Me Stories written by Matt Greenfield and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-08-26 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just So-me Stories flirts with the hyphen in between "non" and "fiction" in chronicling the darkest moments of Matt Greenfield's young life. "The Edge Behind Me" investigates a Memorial Day weekend/breakdown in the life of an alienated young teacher and would-be rock star known only as "Mr. B" as he interacts with students, parents, the vapid bar/concert scene, and an imaginary interviewer, all while trying to dodge the mystical musical inspiration he carries inside of him. "Drug-Induced Wanderings, Hooped Up on Them Goofballs" is the brief unexpurgated account of Greenfield's subconscious as his conscious self struggles with the side effects of a narcotic cough syrup one Thanksgiving weekend. And "And Found" is the true-but-much-elaborated story of Greenfield's peripatetic cross-country odyssey during his first full summer as a teacher. While the students are away, the teachers will play in these three witty, insightful, and completely un/true explorations of the solipsistic human spirit.
