Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ruminations on Railways The manner in which the Board of Trade has gradually acquired to itself the legislative control over Railway schemes exhibits a fine specimen of modern tactics in Legislation. The skill now exhibited in the method of originating Acts of Parliament is a remarkable innovation upon the straightforward course of former ages. The public cannot fail to observe that, whenever it is wished, for some peculiar purpose, to produce a Bill, which is either novel and doubtful in its provisions, or unconstitutional in its powers, or adverse to the liberty of the subject or the freedom of trade or commerce, instead of at once presenting it in a manly way to Parliament for consideration upon its merits, the promoter contrives first to strengthen his position by obtaining the appointment of a select committee of the House of Commons, which means a committee selected by himself, and, having the nomination of the committee, and the conduct of its inquiries, he must be a great goose if the Report of that committee be not favourable to the introduction of that specimen of legislative wisdom to which he is the father. Book excerpt: An epic and revelatory narrative of the most important transportation technology of the modern world In his wide-ranging and entertaining new book, Tom Zoellner—coauthor of the New York Times–bestselling An Ordinary Man—travels the globe to tell the story of the sociological and economic impact of the railway technology that transformed the world—and could very well change it again. From the frigid trans-Siberian railroad to the antiquated Indian Railways to the Japanese-style bullet trains, Zoellner offers a stirring story of this most indispensable form of travel. A masterful narrative history, Train also explores the sleek elegance of railroads and their hypnotizing rhythms, and explains how locomotives became living symbols of sex, death, power, and romance.

Book Synopsis Comics through Time [4 volumes] by : M. Keith Booker
Download or read book Comics through Time [4 volumes] written by M. Keith Booker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-10-28 with total page 2104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing especially on American comic books and graphic novels from the 1930s to the present, this massive four-volume work provides a colorful yet authoritative source on the entire history of the comics medium. Comics and graphic novels have recently become big business, serving as the inspiration for blockbuster Hollywood movies such as the Iron Man series of films and the hit television drama The Walking Dead. But comics have been popular throughout the 20th century despite the significant effects of the restrictions of the Comics Code in place from the 1950s through 1970s, which prohibited the depiction of zombies and use of the word "horror," among many other rules. Comics through Time: A History of Icons, Idols, and Ideas provides students and general readers a one-stop resource for researching topics, genres, works, and artists of comic books, comic strips, and graphic novels. The comprehensive and broad coverage of this set is organized chronologically by volume. Volume 1 covers 1960 and earlier; Volume 2 covers 1960–1980; Volume 3 covers 1980–1995; and Volume 4 covers 1995 to the present. The chronological divisions give readers a sense of the evolution of comics within the larger contexts of American culture and history. The alphabetically arranged entries in each volume address topics such as comics publishing, characters, imprints, genres, themes, titles, artists, writers, and more. While special attention is paid to American comics, the entries also include coverage of British, Japanese, and European comics that have influenced illustrated storytelling of the United States or are of special interest to American readers.

Book excerpt: "In this spellbinding book, journalist Ed Caesar takes us into the world of elite marathoners: some of the greatest runners on earth. Through the stories of these rich characters, like Kenyan Geoffrey Mutai, around whom the narrative is built, Caesar traces the history of the marathon as well as the science, physiology, and psychology involved in running so fast for so long. And he shows us why this most democratic of races retains its brutal, enthralling appeal--and why we are drawn to test ourselves to the limit, "--Amazon.com.
