This book was released on 2004 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 1 July 2000 regulations to liberalize trade flows between Mexico and the European Union came into force, after more than six years of diplomatic work and complex negotiations. These regulations are part of the "Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLCUEM), which is also one of the components of the Agreement on Economic Association, Political Concertation and Cooperation ("Global Agreement"). The Global Agreement through its three components - political dialogue, trade liberalization and cooperation- was at the time the most ambitious agreement ever constituted by the EU. The economic association component included in the Global Agreement - the TLCUEM- was the first overseas free trade treaty and served as an important precedent for later EU negotiations with other Latin American countries. The purpose of this essay is to analyze the reasons that led Mexico and the EU to the constitution of this treaty; to describe the main challenges of the Global Agreement negotiations of different components; and to briefly review the results of the first three years since the TLCUEM enforcement.

Book Synopsis Quantitative Methods for Assessing the Effects of Non-tariff Measures and Trade Facilitation by : Philippa S. Dee
Download or read book Quantitative Methods for Assessing the Effects of Non-tariff Measures and Trade Facilitation written by Philippa S. Dee and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As tariffs have fallen worldwide, the increasing importance of non-tariff policies for further trade liberalization has become widely recognized. The methods for assessing the potential effects of such liberalization have lagged significantly behind those available for analyzing tariffs. This book is the first volume that comprehensively addresses this gap. It has been designed to be useful for both economists and policymakers, especially for those involved in communicating ideas and results between economists and policymakers. This indispensable book contains cutting-edge discussions of the full range of methodologies used in this area, including business surveys, summary statistics such as effective rates of protection and price gaps, time-series and panel econometrics, and simulation methods such as computable general equilibrium. It covers the entire spectrum of policies under discussion in current trade negotiations, including trade facilitation, services policies, quantitative measures, customs procedures, standards, movement of natural persons, and anti-dumping. Some prominent contributors to this book are Bijit Bora (World Trade Organization), John Wilson, Tsunehiro Otsuki and Vlad Manole (World Bank), Catherine Mann (Institute of International Economics), Alan Deardorff and Robert Stern (University of Michigan), Joe Francois (Erasmus University), Dean Spinanger (University of Kiel), Antoni Estevadeordal and Kati Suominen (Inter-American Development Bank), Thomas Prusa (Rutgers University), Thomas Hertel and Terrie Walmsley (Purdue University), Scott Bradford (Brigham Young University), Judith Dean, Robert Feinberg, Soamiely Andriamananjara and Marinos Tsigas (US International Trade Commission).
Book Synopsis Globalization, migration and development : the role of Mexican migrant remittances (Working Paper ITD = Documento de Trabajo ITD ; n. 20) by : J. Ernesto López Córdova
Download or read book Globalization, migration and development : the role of Mexican migrant remittances (Working Paper ITD = Documento de Trabajo ITD ; n. 20) written by J. Ernesto López Córdova and published by BID-INTAL. This book was released on 2006 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, we present evidence indicating that international migrant remittances lead to improved developmental outcomes. Using a cross-section of all Mexican municipalities (over 2400) in the year 2000, we show that an increase in the fraction of households receiving international remittances is correlated with better schooling and health indicators and with reductions in poverty, even after controlling for the likely endogeneity between remittances and developmental outcome variables. Our findings have important policy implications as they suggest that national governments and the international community should adopt measures that facilitate remittance flows.

Book Synopsis Regional integration : what in it for CARICOM ? (Working Paper ITD = Documento de Trabajo ITD; 29) by : Mauricio Mesquita Moreira
Download or read book Regional integration : what in it for CARICOM ? (Working Paper ITD = Documento de Trabajo ITD; 29) written by Mauricio Mesquita Moreira and published by BID-INTAL. This book was released on 2006 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic and political integration have been a perennial and neuralgic issue in the Caribbean agenda. This paper draws on the literature on trade, growth and regional agreements to discuss the motivation behind the Caribbean drive for integration, the results obtained so far and what is in stock for the future. It argues, with the help of descriptive statistics, an empirical growth model and a gravity model, that the traditional, trade related gains from regional integration have been and are bound to be limited because of (i) the countries' high openness; (ii) the limited size of the common, enlarged market; and (iii) the countries' relatively similar factor endowments. It also argues, though, that gains in the area of non-tradables, due to economies of scale which cannot be mitigated by trade and openness, can be substantial.
