Wilson was a novelist and dramatist of considerable popularity in the early twentieth century - this title provides readers with the opportunity to read the work that Wilson is most well known for. Ruggles of Red Gap is the story of an English butler, Marmaduke Ruggles, that is lost by his master in a poker game, and subsequently must relocate to the United States to look after a family unfamiliar to him. Of course, his new masters are the young and crude American couple Effie and Egbert Floud, and Ruggles must navigate life in a new country and the powerful personalities of his new employers. This is a classic fish out of water tale, and one that unfolds in comedic fashion. The character of Ruggles develops throughout the story, and emerges a better man for all of his tribulations. Ruggles of Red Gap is an eminently readable story written by an author who specialized in creating works to be enjoyed by a large swath of the population. Wilson is an intelligent and witty writer who builds subtle jokes into almost every situation. Ruggles is designed as the perfect straight man, with secondary characters responsible for most overtly forwarding the book's humour. Harry Leon Wilson's tale of Marmaduke Ruggles in America is a pleasant read that will appeal to any fans of comedy from this era. Its breezy pace makes it a quick read, and one deserving of the accolades it has received. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Harry Leon Wilson (May 1, 1867 - June 28, 1939) was an American novelist and dramatist best known for his novels Ruggles of Red Gap and Merton of the Movies. Another of his works, Bunker Bean, helped popularize the term "flapper". He began work as a stenographer after leaving home at 16, and he worked his way west through Topeka, Kansas, Omaha, Nebraska, Denver, Colorado, and eventually to California. He was a contributor to the histories of Hubert Howe Bancroft, and became the private secretary to Virgil Bogue. In December 1886, Wilson's story The Elusive Dollar Bill was accepted by Puck magazine. He continued to contribute to Puck and became assistant editor in 1892. Henry Cuyler Bunner died in 1896 and Wilson replaced him as editor.

Book excerpt: The great American Westerns can be profoundly meaningful when read metaphorically. More than mere shoot 'em up entertainment, they are an essential part of a vibrant, evolving national mythology. Like other versions of the archetypal Hero's Journey, these films are filled with insights about life, love, nature, society, ethics, beauty and what it means to be human, and are key to understanding American culture. Part film guide, part historical survey, this book explores the mythic and artistic elements in 52 great Westerns--some orthodox, some subversive--from the genre's first half-century. Each film is given detailed critical analysis, from the earliest silent movies to Golden Age classics like Red River (1948), High Noon (1952) and Shane (1953).

Book excerpt: This groundbreaking film study begins with a survey of American print humorists from eras leading up to and overlapping the advent of film--including some who worked both on the page and on the screen, like Robert Benchley, Will Rogers, Groucho Marx and W. C. Fields. Six comic film genres are identified as outgrowths of a national tradition of Cracker Barrel philosophers, personality comedy, parody, screwball comedy, romantic comedy and dark comedy. Whether it is Mark Twain or a parody film involving Steve Martin, comedy is most often about blowing "raspberries" at the world, and a reminder you are not alone.
