Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peter Paul Rubens Rubens' paintings alone, excluding designs for en graving, number over a thousand, and embrace almost every class of subject capable of artistic handling, whether sacred or profane. Further, the manner of treat ment is as varied as are the subjects. We have compo sitions in the loftiest style, transfused with the grand renaissance spirit; on the other hand we have subjects of the utmost coarseness, depicted unfalteringly, without reserve or bound, the last word frankly said; we have love of nature, shown in tenderest landscape, and most subtle portraiture; and again, instances of pure genre, and further still, acres of decorative canvas, inspired as it would seem to modern eyes, by sycophancy alone. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peter Paul Rubens: His Life and Genius Dr. Waagen's visit to England enabled him to add a variety of criticisms on celebrated pictures now in this country, which will he especially interesting to the English reader. The translation will he found most faithful to the sense and spirit of the original. The Editor has ventured to add a few notes of no value whatever to the artist or the connoisseur, hut not perhaps without interest and amusement for the mere amateur. Some pictures have been added to the specimens noticed in the text, always keeping in view that the object of the work was to give a catalogue of the pictures of Rubens, only so far as they illustrated certain general principles. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rubens, Vol. 2 The History of Marie de Medici and in the other that Of Henri IV. He was to begin with the former, do what he could of it at home, and return when he had painted eight or ten pictures. We are convinced that Rubens received the order for the Medici gallery with enthusiasm and that he set to work full of courage and confidence in himself. On the 13th September, 1621, a few months, even a few weeks, before he was hidden to Paris, he wrote to William Trumbull: everyone has his special grace: my talent is such that no enterprise, however vast in quantity and diversity of subjects, ever conquered my courage In this case, indeed, the task was immense, and calculated to spur on the genius of this inexhaustible creator. He had to paint the lives of two royal persons passed in the midst of the most brilliant court of the time; to decorate the most splendid palace with an innumerable series of compositions, and to recall to being episodes of dazzling magnificence, scenes of war and peace, and events in family and in public life: for him it was the realisation of a mighty dream. Download or read book Rubens His Life, His Work, and His Time, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint) written by Emile Michel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rubens His Life, His Work, and His Time, Vol. 1 of 2 Rubens's history is well known. His correspondence, although only a portion of it has been preserved, is voluminous. And his con temporaries wrote of him in great detail. We owe much information concerning him to Sandrart, who knew him personally. After his death the facts he had collected were supplemented by the biographical notes furnished to Bellori and De Piles by Philip Rubens, the artist's nephew. But it is only in our own day that these various statements have been properly verified. A Dutch scholar, R. C. Bakhuizen van den Brink, was the first to penetrate the secret of the place of the artist's birth and of the mysterious events that determined it. For the Italian period, M. Armand Baschet's fortunate discoveries in the Archives of Mantua have enlightened us concerning the length of Rubens's visit to Italy, his life at Vincenzo Gonzaga's court, the varied means of instruction he found there and the first pictures he painted. To Cruzada Villaamil and to Justi we owe interesting details of his two missions to Spain, of which M. Gachard has given a careful account in his H z'stoz're Politz'que ot Dz'plomatz'que do Rubens. Several collections of Rubens's letters have been published, annotated by Em. Gachet, Carpenter, Sainsbury and Ad. Rosenberg. The recent publication of a fine edition of Peiresc's letters, with excellent notes by M. Tamizey de Larroque, throws much new light on Rubens's visits to France and on the friends there with whom he carried on a regular correspondence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Policy and Paint: Or Some Incidents in the Lives of Dudley Carleton and Peter Paul Rubens The two men in question were born in successive years; Dudley Carleton, a scion of an old English family, on 10 March, 1573, and Rubens, according to some the son of a Flemish chemist, on 27 April, 1574. Most attention will be paid here to the less known history of Dudley Carleton.
